Pro tip for catching ferals: Don't release them into a room, once you have them caught, put them in a large dog crate and cover that. Small spaces deny them the speed they need to really go crazy and hurt themselves. Also, once you trap a cat IMMEDIATELY take them to a vet. Every time they're trapped they become more wary. If someone else is going to cover the vet costs, have them reimburse you for the initial health check and spay/neuter.

This. I imagine there are several of us who would donate for vet fees to check on any stray/feral cats Morgan caught if cost is an issue (I mean, I get time is too). A vet's office can check for a microchip and assess the health of the cat if it seems feral like this one did.

Always keep a cat in a trap covered with something. It keeps them much calmer and prevents them from injuring themselves. I would have immediately taken him still in the trap to get neutered. Our vets who neuter ferals have a screen that fits into those traps and limits the cat's movements so the vet can tranquilize them and then give them anesthesia for their neuter.

Now that the cat knows what happens when he goes in the Hav-a-heart trap he probably won't do it again. If he comes back, which I doubt, you will probably have to use a "drop trap" that hangs over the food area and drops down on the cat. There are lots of videos on how to use that type of trap.

Hi Morgan, FYI: Feral cats that are not vaccinated can spread all types of viruses to your cats. It's best to thoroughly clean & disinfect your cat bowls since the fugitive cat was eating out of them. Most diseases are spread thru saliva & other bodily fluids so it's better to be safe than sorry. In addition, I noticed you use plastic bowls which can house bacteria so it's better to use stainless steel bowls or ceramic bowls that can be sanitized with animal safe cleaners & very HOT water. I'll be mailing something for you kitties via mail soon !! Your friend, Cathy in California, a big fan !!!
@MsSweetpea1958

Absolutely! Also, watch if your kitties may have been attacked. A bite can go unknown until an abscess shows up and that's not good.
@LB-vl3qn
@LB-vl3qn 2 жыл бұрын
Excellent advice! I forgot to mention it in my very long comment above, but this is standard practice for feeding cats. Even if there are no ferals around eating out of your cats' bowls, the cats can develop unsightly and downright nasty cat acne on their sweet little chins from eating out of plastic bowls. It's a bear to get rid of, too. One thing I've noticed that is not uncommon is that new cat owners tend to treat their cats and dogs exactly the same. Cats are not just dogs in a different style of body; they are a completely different species with completely different requirements. Anyone contemplating getting a cat would be wise to spend a bit of time researching them, their behaviors, and their needs before bringing one home, for the sake of the cat and the household welcoming it. ~ Lisa

The feral cat will be trap shy now, it will be harder to capture him/her a second time. Next time keep the captured cat in a slightly larger metal crate while in the transition period. Smaller spaces will keep it calm and less likely to hurt itself. Wild and feral animals will always find ways to escape a room even if you are sure you fool-proofed it.

Once upon a time I had a really feral Cat brought into my house by an animal control officer who had loaned me a have a heart trap to catch him in. This was done on purpose. I had been feeding this cat for months and months outside, but could not touch him. He was brought into a bathroom to be his isolation ward. I had an excellent adult cat and a kitten at the time. After we scared him into a carrier took him to the veterinary office and had everything possible done on that one appointment, we learned that he was healthy! After he had healed from his neutering surgery he was allowed to leave the master bathroom and add the master bedroom to his living space. By this time the kitten had snuck into the bathroom to meet him (charming sweet nose touching) so he knew he had an allie. We had a floor to ceiling climbing tree so that he could climb up and lay on top of an armoire, usually with the kitten. Our senior cat was a splendid example to him a good indoor cat behavior and eventually he got brave enough to lay on the bed at night. He learned his manners along with the kitten. 5 1/2 months after his capture I got to pet him. To this day I have never had another cat so easy to clip claws on! He turned into an absolute teddy bear!

One of the nicer things I've discovered over the past few years while feeding a couple of strays who live in the garden behind my small apartment building is some of my neighbors have been taking care of them as well. Even my super got in on the act and build a couple of very nice kitty shelters out of wood and concrete. They're feral, don't let anyone touch them but its come to a point where they greet me, roll around on their backs showing me tummy and happily accept their treats. I'd be more worried but they're actually quite spoiled. As they should be.

TNR doesn't work. Feral cats are the 2nd worst invasive species on earth and have directly caused the EXTINCTION of 33 species. If you care about animals and ecosystems, you should trap or cull any feral you see. Also outdoor cats have a way shorter average lifespan and usually suffer very unpleasant deaths from disease, parasites, or the jaws of a coyote if they're lucky
@islandwills2778
@islandwills2778 2 жыл бұрын
significantly different. Farm cats do not form colonies for one thing. For another a stray, especially a male will often fight and injure the barn cats who live there. Effectively they need to be moved far away from the farm or killed since a true feral will never be tamed
@savingchase
@savingchase 2 жыл бұрын
@@islandwills2778 the idea of rehoming the feral cat to the other farm would have been a great solution. While feral cats can't be tamed they can absolutely be barn cats/farm cats; a lot of the rescues and shelters near here have programs to relocate ferals to farms or warehouses needing rodent control if they don't have a colony to go back to. Neutering him and moving him to another farm would have been a humane solution, since he was not integrating well with this guy's cats. The sad thing is the cat probably had a colony, and someone probably trapped and dumped him on the farm, instead of TNRing him like they should have. Kitten Lady does have a lot of great info on ferals and she does work with "farm ferals" too. Also great info on what to do if you end up with feral kittens in your yard/farm ... helped me save two litters so they could go on to be loving house cats!

It takes A LOT of patience and time to get a feral acclimated to people...or even just you. It took me 1 year just to be able to touch ours. We only adopt feral's on our farm. We built a cat-house attached to an area of the barn. Since they have direct access to the outside they will use the cat house..particularly when it gets cold. We also add waterproof heating pads made for cats into the cat house. If the cat makes the decision to be more friendly around people and lets us touch them for example, then we start moving them closer to people and eventually inside the barn or the house with the other cats. It takes a LONG time..you can't just put them inside and expect them to behave like a house cat..they are wild animals.

A few years ago I had a feral cat at work. At first it was in the wooded area near my office. It was wild, snarled and hissed at anyone. I kept feeding him and slowly he would come to me to eat. As the years went by during the winter I would leave the office door open and he would come in and lie on the shelf above a radiator. Eventually he would let me pick him up. Also he would roll over to let me tickle his tummy. He loved this and never once stuck his claws into me to drag my hand over to bite as has happened with other peoples home cats. We were very trusting of each other. He would be waiting for me on a morning a short distance from my office. I would stop, open my car door and he would jump in. When I stopped at my office he would be up on my steering wheel rubbing his head across my face. He was always so happy to see me. After about 10 years he became ill and I took him to a vet. He was so calm and relaxed as he was examined. He was given treatment and was ok again but a few months later one morning he was really ill and could hardly walk. I took him to the vet but there was nothing that could be done for him. I was devastated. He was the best cat that I had ever known.

I hope that cat gets the help it needs. Next time you trap a feral, just keep it in the trap (or put it in a dog carrier if you safely can) and take it straight to the vet for neutering, shots and a chip check. If someone else takes it, they can reimburse you for the vet bill.

A few extra barn cats never hurt. I do a TNR with one or two of the feral cats in our neighborhood each month. I have a deal worked out with my vet where once I catch them I just bring them in and they board them until they can fit them into the schedule. While they are there they get dewormed and whatever shots they need and the whole process is about 2 weeks long. Since the cats aren't as feral as a cat in the country they will also try to adopt them out during those 2 weeks. If not, I pick them up and release them back into the neighborhood. Two times we caught cats with FIV but were fortunate enough to find a rescue that works with difficult cases. In both cases those FIV cats went to the homes of some elderly couples where they now live their life as loving inside cats. If you are going to do TNR I would recommend having the vet clip the tip of one of the cats ears so that in the future you or someone else can easily tell the cat has already been fixed.

Great advice. Given kindly. Someone was so nasty with advice. Very belittling. If you have a feral cat in a trap, and vet has no equipment, you can buy sofa cushions - pref fairly hard packed, at bootbsales or yard sales, or at charity shops, and once at vets, feed the cushions into trap, lifting trap gate only 2 or 3 inches, with more and more cushions, until trap is full of cushions and and cat is squashed up far end. If enough cushions, cat won't be able to turn or move and vet will be able to inject cat with knockout dose, and it won't be able to avoid needle. Once knocked out or dopey, you can get cat out.

That cat is to healthy for a feral WAY to healthy, meaning it's likely more a stray cat (meaning a cat who has strayed and gotten lost and returned to default wild state due to being lost for a long while) Also as someone who fosters feral, works with cats protection to help humanise adult feral, NEVER EVER put them in a room where they have things they can hurt themselves on like you did in this vid. Also it's better to house captured cats in a dog crate to keep them contained. and frankly you should have gone directly to the vets once you had this one in the trap to get it scanned in case it's microchipped. the process of taming up an Adult feral cat is the same as it is with kittens but it takes a LOT longer, if they are strays they will warm up much quicker as they were already pre-humanised.

In my experience, predators usually find different places to roam after an experience like this. They think they are going to die when they get caught, lol. If someone manhandles you around and locks you up in a room while making strange noises, it doesn't take much situational awareness to start panicking, but for them it's potentially even worse. A wild animal's only framework of understanding your interest in them is "he's going to eat me"

Told him to keep food out for here and when the time is right she would bring the kittens out when they were ready. I wore the welding gloves to try and prevent me losing too much blood, lol. Anyway, even though I clipped his claws regularly, he still was able to get through the leather when he got too wound up. And he was able to bite through it to bring blood on my finger. It was impressive. Makes you realize what a healthy, angry feral cat can do to your skin. And then it makes you think about what big cats (leopards, jaguars, tigers, etc) can do to a person. …and it makes me think about the geniuses that try to keep big cats as pets.

Not sure why you suggest pet training pads. Put a litter pan in there and put a poop in there from your indoor cats' litter pan to clue the cat in as to what the litter pan is for. Put the trap in the crate (42 inch crate is a great size - single or double door) and keep it covered with a towel or piece of fabric so the cat uses it to hide in. If you don't do that, the cat might hide in the litter pan.

I don't think you should try to rehome a cat that showed up and for which you weren't able to locate an owner. Unless the standard protocol for rehoming a feral is followed, it's basically dumping the cat which is cruel. The protocol is to contain the cat for ten days (if I remember correctly), which means keeping it a trap or a cage in a warm, safe, dry place for all that time (e.g., a barn or shed). If I understand correctly, by the end of that time the cat won't remember its prior home, which makes it much more likely that it won't run off. But there's no guarantee that the cat won't run off, so the most humane thing to do is to let the cat loose on your own property after it's been altered and vaccinated (and the anesthesia has worn off).

Doing it blind is nothing to be proud of these days, when information is so easily accessible. (Look up TNR for tips, even if you're not doing the NR part.) And please don't call the cat "angry". Feral cats are the best! I used to work in an animal shelter and I had my own cat house full of adoptee kitties. These feral cats are so smart they hang around the shelter and sneak over the fence and stuff just to get the food laying around and then they get out of there and you do not mess with them! Only certain ladies were cat lady enough to work with those cats. And they told me their trick is to use a long stick with a feather on a string to lure the kitty and those kitties will do anything they'll come to you if you lure them with that little feather. Just let him hang around and be feral. He'll get tamer if you don't mess with him. If you do catch him in a cage take him to a vet or call the feral cat society if your area has one. They catch him and take them for health care and shots and spay and neuter and then they let them back out to be feral.

He may/may not return, but if he does, I'd be shocked if he goes in a trap again. Most learn the first time and often don't repeat that same "mistake". @@Ghostykins Not necessarily. They could have been separated by a natural disaster completely beyond the human's control, or the human could have passed away unexpectedly without any living relatives. (Or the feral cat actually could have simply descended from other cats back during the days when human culture and how people did or didn't keep their animals in general were just completely different and they didn't have spaying and neutering yet and it was common to just let them roam freely and choose for themselves if they stuck around or not..where there are feral cats, you never really know how long they have actually been there or not, nor how or why they got there to begin with; especially where there are farms that have changed hands from several families. Maybe the feral cat even comes from a cat who snuck onto a ship and stowed away to a new country all on its own a long long time ago, it might be unlikely, but it's not totally impossible.) Why does it matter, either way, though? The point is, yes, sometimes animals are abandoned and that is crummy; but also, sometimes animals just honestly never even know a human home to begin with. We really shouldn't assume to know any animal's exact story any one way or another, unless we actually know that particular animal's actual story for real. 🙂 (Cats are truthfully only SEMI-domesticated though, and many people believe that cats likely domesticated themselves by choosing to live near the convenience of human populations as much or more than humans purposefully domesticated them, in which case that's not entirely the fault of humans at all..unlike other domesticated things.) There is rarely ever just one possibility only that could have actually occurred in any unknown situation. You really never know.

I use that same havahart model 1079 for feral cats. After trapping them I use a 22 revolver to the back of the head before removing them from the cage. Having them fixed doesn’t stop the havoc they inflict on native wildlife species in any area.

As some one who was participating in TNR operations for most of 2021, you should keep the trap covered until they are ready to be let out, it keeps the calm.

Really surprised you let him out into that room nstead of taking him straight to a vet from the cage, that's usually a standard protocol for these things.

He has said there is a local vet shortage. He often waits 2 weeks for a non urgent slot. Maybe this vet doesn't see caught feral as urgent. But it is disappointing.

I don't know that releasing it into a room like that was such a good idea. I would've just taken it straight to a vet while in the trap. Def rehome him if you catch him again.

So it hit me this morning, did you check for prints outside to make sure the cat did escape? Since there is snow/slush/mud around right now paw prints would be visible. Is it possible its playing hide and seek in the shed? Just questions I have came up with since watching the video and sleeping on it lol. I would request that you at leave some food and water in that area for a few days to make sure.

I tried two feral kittens so we could snatch them up, we were the only food in town, I would sit down at my front door, I would throw one piece of kittle, they would eat it, then another and another, they were terrified of me, if I moved at all they would run away, that is when I went inside and NO MORE FOOD, the next time I went out repeat, in the end I could dance around with my feet and pet the cat, if not NO MORE FOOD, wait until tomorrow. We adopted one and trained and gave away the other one. Hunger is a good motivator.

Protip for gaining the trust of feral and fearful cats: learn the art of the *slow blink.* When cats are on alert or aggressive, they stare intently with eyes wide open, which other cats interpret as a sign of aggression and possible attack. Thus, humans with their eyes behaving according to human body language, look angry and threatening as they stare directly at and follow the cat with their eyes wide open gaze. When cats are feeling relaxed and benevolent toward other cats in the vicinity, they signal this mood by slow blinking, then keeping their eyes partially shut. They also look to the side of other cats rather than stare directly at them. Mimic this behavior around cats, especially strange or cautious ones, and watch the effect it has. It's almost a cheat code for getting to know cats.

I have had a few feral cats over the years. I currently have one I rescued from getti g beat up every night in our back yard and around the neighborhood. I took her to my vet who repaired the deeper gashes, neutered her and gave her all the shots. He kept her for two days getting antbiotics. I took her home and had planned on taking her to the shelter but I didn't like the answers I was getting. I put up flyers, did the facebook groups, etc. No one ever claimed her. The vet said she couldn't have been out long, no flees, not pregnant, but an extremely scared cat. Long story short she is now super affectionate with us, was litter trained from day one and is just a sweet cat. It didn't start out that way. It took six months to get her out from under the bed in the guest room and she still will run and hide if anyone comes to visit no matter how many times she has seen them.

i wonder if its possible to train toby and abby to bark at certain cats but not the ones who live there? sounds complicated

I don't know if it would be possible to train or not(Maybe if Toby was already trained to bark on command then he could be trained to do so whenever the other cat was seen if you were out there with him when it showed up to command him to until he picked up the habit)..but my dog kinda just does that spontaneously.🤔 He barks at literally all unfamiliar things and living creatures he hasn't been specifically introduced to and familiarized with; but doesn't bark at me or any of my cats. Loll Of course, the feral cat that showed up in my yard before is now one of my cats too so there's no cat my dog barks at anymore unless another wayward visitor turns up sometime in the future. 🤣

I rescued a cat that was abandoned outside, luckily she was healthy and just had a wonky red eye., that cleared up with eye drops from the vet. She had been someone’s cat because she was good in the house. No one claimed her, with fliers placed all through out neighborhood. I called on her, and the people who found her said I could have her.

A no kill shelter doesn’t mean no kill for feral cats. Some shelters might have barn cat programs, the one in the county I live in does. But most of the time if you surrender a feral cat to any kind of shelter, no kill or not, they won’t make it out alive.

this video is clickbait and a great example of what NOT to do to humanely trap and provide care to a feral cat. the fact you were so haphazard and hadn't given the plan any prior thought, and then stood there and filmed and slo-mo-replayed the cat running around and getting hurt after you let it out of the trap ... I cringed the whole time and was baffled by your lack of empathy

My friend's farm has a stray who is very aloof but wants to be friendly. I feed him whenever I stay there. Last summer, he was around while I was sitting out near the barn, but then he vanished. He was sitting under my lawn chair! I also catch him laying (and purring) on anything of mine I've left outside. He lets me pet him now and then, but that's it.

I have a feeling he might not be completely feral since he isnt aggressive at all, a lot of feral cats I see tend to be all fight, so you should really talk to local rescues, he just seems scared to me :) My domesticated cat acts exactly like this when we have to move from one place to another, my advice if you get him again is keep him crated with a cover like someone else mentioned, feliway helps calm down cats too so you might wanna invest in a bottle if he becomes too panicky
