Against all odds, here I am daily driving a Volvo V70. My opinion has certainly changed on this car and I am learning to appreciate it more and more!

I should probably add well built and understated / classy not too flashy if that’s what you are going for. Whilst they are considered perhaps dull and boring or the safe choice, thing is if you want exciting buy a sports car not an suv, if you are skint and want to lug your family around it is a good all round choice

I do enjoy the slightly chaotic stream of consciousness that Lucy has. Light hearted reviewing has value. And on a slightly more serious note; what the two V70 videos has shown is that sometimes the traditional short test drive isn’t enough to get a full picture of the car. With a few days, the Volvo has been able to show what it’s really about.

This is why we watch your videos Lucy. You are a bit nuts, which is good. Nobody wants the opinions of a boring old man spouting statistics. What we want is a real person with real personal opinions, feelings and who can inject some fun into it. It's why old top gear/grand tour worked and fifth gear never did. Keep it up.

Hey Lucy! I drive Volvo myself and one of things I really really love about it is the indicator stick!! Thanks I am not crazy. Everytime I go back to my Volvo from some other car, I just in the driver seat and I am like, ah this calmness, everything is exactly where it should be.

I have had many Volvo's in my 60 years, my favourite was a 1970 H reg 3.0 litre straight 6 Volvo 164 manual, you would probably struggle to find one these days, but if you did I'd recommend you trying one out., I had a handful of other Volvo 145 estates, a 144, not nearly as much fun as the 164, plus it was 3 speed auto, But another favourite was my old Volvo 760 GLE auto, 2.9 V6 saloon, for their time they were surprisingly quick, very comfortable and not too bad on fuel. these are just a few of the many big engine gas guzzlers I have owned. Incidentally when I travelled across western France in 1995 I took my 2.6 Rover SD1, my friend took his Volvo 145 estate, He was doing almost 2 tanks of fuel to my one tank, Something it seems they have not remedied. I watch your videos because it is nice to see a young lady interested in cars, and to involve your family as well is just refreshing, your not some over paid celebrity just coining it in for your self indulged opinions, You are just a nice friendly person and you are good at it, so keep it up.

Another "geeky fact" - I understand Volvo have a 'double-bulkhead' and thicker window glass as well as general great build quality and excellent seats, which means you don't feel as tired having done a long journey. MPG in town.. yes it's not good.. it's a motorway muncher, so keep it in it's strong-suit!

Get a full Volvo service Lucy once a year, it’s worth it, and to know you and the family are now in a tank, gives a nice warm sort of feeling when you see all the daftys on the road.

Hi Lucy, I love the follow up, and re-considering you've done. We have had an 2006 XC90 whilst living in Sweden - totally loved it (after owning 3 Ford Explorers). So muych so, that we brought it with us back to the UK. However, an opportunity to purchase an 2011 L322 at a great price came up, so we took the plunge. That's how I found your channel actually. Anyway, having had to RR for 3 months - we are still missing that XC90. It has more flexibility in storage, and can absorb those IKEA bookcases which our RR Vogue cannot do. Difficult choice, no as there is no doubt about the luxury the RR offers, but gotta weigh that up with the flexibility and perhaps better practicality of the XC90. You gotta test an XC90, as you mentioned!

I think i commented on the last one you did on this; glad to see this has grown on you. I am on my 4th Volvo now; C30 (2007 plate), V50 (2008 plate), V60 (2018 plate lease, when Volvo where doing a mega lease deal that was a steal) then another V60 (2013 plate) - driven a lot more of them with all kinds of engines, T3/T4/T5/T6 - D2/D3/D4/D5 - the real peaches for me being the T5 and D5 (5 Cylinders ones) - the newer ones feel a bit lacking. What i have found with the trim levels is, try to avoid r-design; the ride while sporty is just too harsh for our roads (he says driving a V60 in r-design se lux trim :D) - if you can find a SE LUX with all the options ticked there is very little you will want from them; not sure what the new trim levels mean at all (post 2018) Side note, they did a face lift on these in 2012-2013 and the dash guages look far nice in them; it can be retro fitted to the early cars which adds a whole new way of keeping one of the older pre-facelift running. Having had the chance to drive almost the entire Volvo range; i think if i was to swap the V60 (unless a reble blue one came up for sale in the right spec !) I would go for a V70/XC70; unless the money was right then it would be a V90/V90CC - but they are very out of my reach currently. The small SUV's are just that, small and offer me nothing (weak engines or ev only; yuck) The XC60; no bigger boot then the V60 and i think is actually smaller ? XC90; now that is a tank of a car but the boot doesn't seem that big ? and a bit rich for me currently (also poor choice of engines on the face lifted 2015-> ones) Really under my skin and I am having a hard time looking at anything that isn't a Volvo (try to compare the kit you get on this car at the trim with others and you will see the others seem spartan, i think only the L&K trim level from Skoda comes close to matching without busting the bank) I might find the unicorn someday

i like your vid's , have watched not many but u really are great at this and at presentation generally, in other words, communication in a very pleasing manner. Perhaps also the overall production value is part of it-- a bright sunny day helps too, for me stuck in gray weather for the past four months straight, which is mind bogglingly ..bad. Volvo's are notorious for being heavy drinkers of petrol/gas and diesel. I love volvo's though have had only two in 30 years.

I think that V70 may have the same transmission as our XV70 T6, and yeah, pretty slow. So flick the lever over to the sport side and try accelerating again. The transmission is keeping the revs low to give good consumption numbers, but definitely takes the edge off of performance (independent of being a diesel). Give it a go

If you like the V70, you will LURVE the XC70. If you want a SUV..XC60 is good, but strangely not as roomy for moving stuff in the back due to the non square opening at the back. Any other cars seats will seem poor in comparison. Very reliable and bullet proof. XC90 is a bit big…try the XC60 too. Great cars. 👍🏻

Make a list, Lucy. Good idea. I do it all the time. In fact, I have a stack of lists right here somewhere. Glad you reconsidered the Volvo which is a good car. But the one thing buyers should also consider is longevity and cost. MPG of 25.6 is actually pretty good, especially for a big lumbering wagon (sorry, "estate"). My '74 MGB (Ever heard of it?) barely gets 20 mpg. So I'd be happy with 25 mpg -- around town, anyway. And yes they are comfortable to be in. Good to see you reconsidering.

Agreed about the XC70 - Swedes use them in the snow and mud.. Unbelievable off-road and I can confirm, although too low ground clearance to be really useful! T5 puts a smile on your face, until you have to fill the tank! Never driven an R.. they're actually quite expensive to buy one and are rare I think. C30 Polestar looks ridiculous and with 4x4 Haldex from the V50 that has the same floor pan could work..

I have a manual f82, a c350e and we have just bought an xc70 as a family trip car as we have 2 under 2 and a large dog. I have owned loads of Volvos including an s60R in the past but i would describe myself as a petrol head and bmw fan boy and i have had numerous M cars. If you want an engaging sporty drive dont buy a Volvo, that is not the point of them. They're also not that reliable, but not horrendous either. The 5 diesels are agricultural, but have good torque and power. Their petrol engines dont compete with the germans in my view, but i do love a T5. The things I really love about volvos is their quirky design, lush interiors, heavy robust build quality, saftey, driver aid options and their soft squishy drive that gets under your skin. I know that objectively better cars are available over the xc70 (I was about to buy an A6 avant quattro 3.0, with adaptive). However, for a long distance and daily family car, I just want a Volvo.

Have always loved Volvos. Why don’t you just go after whatever you favourite car is? You must have one. 4 months ago I bought a mint TD5 Discovery 2 Landmark. So glad I did as considered a number of other 4x4’s and also estates. But everything I tried, including a couple of XC90’s, always came back to the Discovery. And 4 months on and a few repairs and bills later, still so glad I did. Repairing a friends XC90 tomorrow and after driving it last weekend, really confirmed I definitely did the right thing. So if you really like something, stick with it and go after it rather than trying to convince yourself you like something else. Great vids. Keep em coming 😉

My son in law had a Td5 and when he took it off roading, proper off roading in Slindon near Bognor Regis area, all he had was a set of bog standard all terrain tyres, nothing special or expensive. I could not believe what this car was capable of doing, In was so impressed, He got stuck a couple of times, due to his ego lol, but he was driving up sheer mud slopes 50/60 feet up like it was nothing, up on three wheels, down through gully's, it just kept on going, even when the alternator died due to going a little too deep, it still got him all the way back to Lewis, we live in Hailsham. I have a L322, as does my brother, {Tempermental but we love them}, my daughter has a disc 3, and my son in law is now on his 2nd RR sport.

FWIW I drive an XC AWD version of what you are testing. A bit of a departure from "hooligan" cars for me. For normal family activities it is just perfect, reliable, comfortable, sensibly economical and a well thought out design. Only my second automatic ever, it works well in this car. I first drove a Volvo 50 years ago, and have driven quite a few over the years, I liked all of them except the anemic base model 340 series. As an old man I find myself inducted into the cult of Volvo, the thing makes me smile every drive, as good as it gets...

What value does this video provide your audience? Well, you're pretty entertaining, for one thing! I found your channel because of your Audi S5 video, and after watching it, I was surprised at how relatively new and small your channel is! I could have been convinced you've been doing these kinds of videos for years. Hope you keep at it, because I've just subscribed, and all that investment (clicking a button...) will feel pretty wasted if you give up on this in another month! Oh, and, something related to the car... well, I've only ever driven one Volvo. It was slow, its handling felt lazy, and its brakes were soft... but it was the most comfortable car I've ever been in, with nothing else coming close to beating it. It had a leather seat that may as well have been a plush armchair. I WISH my the chair at my desk was half as comfortable! That, alone, has made me a bit curious about their faster models, as well.

Mileage depends not only how you drive it, the computer takes a while to update the mpg. It will also get used to your driving style. I have one of these, bought it in Kent and it had been driven by someone with a different style. The mpg improved driving it home to East Anglia. It also learnt not to remind me to keep lane discipline. Obviously the previous driver either had a problem or the narrow lanes in Kent put the car in the middle of the road. Mine is manual, and driven within the speed limit over a long distance, it will give you 1000 miles on a full tank. Local driving gives me 650 to 700. Glad you are coming round to it. Give it a few years and you will own one, providing the current trend towards electric and no more estate cars might mean they're harder to find. Owners will hang on to theirs. Even Joel doesn't want to part with his XC90..

I had an original V40 SE Lux Sport for over 10 years and did over 70k thinking I’d keep it for a couple of years - it was comfy. I then mithered for a late P3 V70 with the D4 8 speed auto with the 2L VEA engine and built in kids’ seats - finally found a high miler with clogged EGR (ash) - took it and the EGR cooler to bits (many known issues) and got it rolling again - even my wife has become accustomed to the auto BUT the economy is nowhere near the claimed 64mpg (just does 45 if driving like a granny) and randomly throws errors. I still can’t park it like I did the V40 and the steering is a bit heavier plus can’t chuck it around. Size-wise it swallows everything so far but I kind of wish they’d continued the range and made a hybrid in the UK but instead the only option is the V90 and estates are now discontinued in the UK 😢

I have had similar experience with VOLVO, I consider myself very much a petrol head, grew up loving cars, taking things apart getting oily, and became a mechanic when left school, everything was about cars, my first few cars were raced around, looked like adverts for Halfords accessories etc, proper boy racer, even bought a brand new Citroen Saxo in the 90's and modified it to the max, Supercharged it, engine work until there was little left to modify, , nitrous the lot, the thing used so much fuel it had to have six injectors on a 4cyl engine(no joke), anyway would never considered a Volvo, even had a lad at my work used to rave about his VOLVO S70 , being in the motor trade we used to rib him something rotten about it, anyway fast forward 2013/14 ish, two circumstances merged, and created a perfect storm in my car history, I left my full time job, in which I used to have a company car, so needed a vehicle, and unfortunately my father died, and as I needed a vehicle and had his house to clear and move stuff to storage, I was looking for a van to temporarily use for a few months to kill 2 birds with one stone, so searched E-bay for a suitable temporary smoke, I don't know how it caught my eye, but saw a VOLVO V70, Remembered how massive they are in the back with rear seats down, thinking it could prob match or get close to the space I would have in a small van, brain started to tick, massively reliable, comfortable and still can have rear passengers if needed, so bought it, used it for what I needed it for, and literally started to fall for it, 236 thousand miles on the clock and still felt tight, no knocks, drives like a dream, and oh my god those seats and the comfort, and the 5cyl engine sounded and pulled great, anyway for something that was "Temporary" I still have it, unfortunately it finally started to fail MOT's on PAS leaks, and things not worth its vale to fix and now is ready for the scrap heap in the sky, but it never let me down, it still drove lake a 30k mile car, it was moderately rapid, sounded nice under accel, great sound system, was a dream on long journeys (My brother lives in France, so done a few trips), and had me totally hooked, used to say I would never have thought in the 90's I would ever have one of those shoe boxes on wheels, the long and short, I am now saving and want a modern latest model Volvo S60 T8 , yes I now want to buy one from choice, how did that happen, yes I'm old now, but still love my cars, never thought I would see them on the road and be saying to myself I want one of those......

I've also got a double bed in the back without too much of a challenge. Brilliant load lugger. Mine averages 34mpg with combined driving, 42mpg on a run. The manuals are better for fuel economy but if you're doing mainly town driving the V70 D5 is simply the wrong car for you.

Yup... ^THIS^ I've got a 2010 530d SE Touring with black leather, panoramic roof, tints, etc that I bought 8 years ago, and without wanting to sound like an arse, it's the best car I'm ever likely to own... I spent 10 months finding the perfect example (the right colour, right interior, right spec, low miles, FBMWSH, etc...) and paid cash (well, bank transfer) as soon as I finished the test drive, and haven't regretted anything about that decision for one second... I can do Calais to the French Alps with one stop for fuel and le WC somewhere around Dijon, and get out fresh as a daisy in Morzine 6.5hrs (Summer) or 8hrs (Winter) later with no stiff neck or back, and still average 34mpg at 85+mph with 2 kayaks on the roof-bars. I doubt I could do that in a 530d Sport and still have all my teeth in their usual place, and the SE will still hustle down a country B-road better than most cars half the size and weight, so I really couldn't agree more 😊👍

In days of crappy quality these things go on and on. My dad had 940 TD with 250k on it. The emission rules at MOTs killed it before the mechanicals did.

So-called 'sporty' cars invariably have a harder ride. You can't go faster than the car in front, and most of our UK roads are so limited by speed and/or volume of traffic, I would take comfort and utility over anything 'sporty'. I have a Land Rover Freelander 2, a Skoda Kodiak, and a Volvo V70, and the Volvo gets by far the most use, out of choice. Try the XC70 (I've just bought one, due to be delivered on the weekend). The XC90 is vast but very thirsty, and the older models wallow around corners. The XC70 is a couple of inches higher than the V70, and 4WD. Mine will be going to Sweden this summer 😊

It does what it says on the tin. That and dependability count for a lot especially if u need practicality. This is a more general non Volvo specific point because other manufacturers sorta do that too…and do it very well….but that doesn’t mean they are the most sports car like to drive. At the somewhat cheaper end of the scale, I’ve been in this position. So like the Volvo, you may have to sacrifice some sporty fun stuff to get dependability….but if the alternative is so unreliable it breaks the credit card each month…..then which is best overall? You can’t have fun on U.K. twisty B roads if the car is spending much of its time on the ramp in the workshop being repaired. Not sure about that diesel economy tho 😂

Ref fuel economy. I have had a few V70’s, XC70, S60 and an XC60..all D5 2.4 diesel engines and have NEVER had fuel consumption as low as you mentioned…ever. The computer on my current 2005 163 bhp XC70 auto says 48mpg with varied driving and enthusiastic acceleration. My 2007 185 bhp S60 D5 auto never read below 40 mpg. My 185bhp 2010 D5 XC60 diesel auto never read less than 35 mpg..just under 40mpg on a run at French péage speeds. Something doesn’t sound right with the one you are driving. I would get the fuel filter and air filter replaced plus check the MAF sensor. I would also put some injector cleaner through it and give it an Italian Tune up run. EGR valve maybe gummed up too. Summat not right in my opinion. My son had an XC90 D5 auto…fuel consumption was nearer 30mpg on that. He also had one of the new S90’s…now you might want to try one of those OR..the V90 Cross Country, if you want to have all the comfort, safety, reliability plus all the toys. Very nice. By the way…the later model XC60 Inscription Pros have massage seats too! I think you maybe fully converted to Volvo’s yet. Loving your laid back attitude on this channel…nothing serious, but also just an enjoyable watch. Thanks. 👍🏻

I'll just point out the trip computers on those old P2 Volvos are hilariously optimistic. My old S60 averaged 40mpg but the computer said 55mpg. I would estimate your XC70 is probably doing more like 35-40mpg at best. Still not bad for such a big old lump.

@@AWMJoeyjoejoe I take your point and don’t rely on the computer religiously. Having done rim to rim measurements once in a while, I have found it to be fairly accurate and only 2 or 3 mpg difference at most. As you can see, I have had a variety of Volvos, including a “newer” XC60, which was also quite frugal. I do tend to use Shell Ultimate diesel every other tank full and can notice the difference in power and smoothness of the engine. My thoughts are that if you put some injector cleaner through it every 6000 miles, do not neglect the fuel filter and use good fuel, the economy for the old lump is very respectable. Oh…and run the tyre pressures up 2 psi too. All in all…great cars. 👍🏻

The older Volvos like the v70 you’re in, are good ones to have. European cars generally get better engine choices as well. In the states we don’t get a diesel anything, and the reliability of the new Volvos is kinda bad

Over the years I have owned, Volvo 240, 740, V40 850, 960, V70, XC90, and now own an XC70. I have had a few cars in between, but always go back to a Volvo. ( Always petrol ). You really should try a Volvo XC70 T5, petrol turbo, 2.5, its NOT a slow car and will give your BMW a run for the money, and it will still be going after the BMW falls apart.
