For weeks, I fantasized about owning the Sony A7IV. But when it finally came time to buy it...I didn't. Here's why.

"Is this the perfect camera... for me?" is a great question to propose. I work at a video production company and we use a variety of Sony cameras and I personally purchased a Fujifilm x100F recently to add to my A7III. And honestly the Fujifilm x100F puts out more cinematic pictures than anything we use including, A7III, A7SIII, A7IV, FX3. there's just something incredible about Fuji's color science and sensors.

I love this. I think we too often try to find the perfect camera, thinking that what the internet states is “the best” is “best for us,” when that can sometimes be furthest from the truth. I love the X100 series! I have the V, and it’s hands down my favorite camera of all time.

Really well said! Owning and using a Fuji camera is a culture of sorts. For me, it took photography from hobby to obsession. Like you said, the camera begs to be handled and used. It can't just be sat on a shelf. It's a muse of sorts. Tools are this way for me as well. In Carpentry or mechanical work, sometimes there are tools I want to use or processes that I look forward to going through, and it inspires the work. I once carried a new screwdriver everywhere I went for 2 weeks until I got to use it! Not everyone is this way, but who cares what drives your ambition as long as you're out there doing the thing!

This is actually a similar story to how I ended up shooting Fuji😃I got a XT100 when I was just getting in to photography (about four years ago) for many of the same reasons (having had it recommended to me, size, and price). Thanks for laying all of this out. From your video alone, (as the first one I came across when I started doing my own mirrorless research), I do have to say that my own camera choice is always turning up Fuji now (all my search history can prove it). All the other Fujifilm videos I come across all have something else in common with you, which is they just seem more passionate about 'why'. I'm pretty sympatico on all your approaches from design to colour output. We've got a pretty good 2nd hand market in Hong Kong, so I'm really hunting for the X series orphan that wants to come home with me.

I feel exactly the same, bought an X-T4 two years ago and it completely revived my love for photography and videography. Such an amazing system and I’ve had more fun than I ever would have imagined using it. The portra 400 recipe makes my straight out of cameras have a magical quality I can’t quite achieve in editing, I’d say over 50% of the time I’ll go with the jpeg and do only slight modifications (only low light does it do worse usually). Great video by the way, very nice editing and you have some awesome film making talent :)

I did the same here, I had an R6, and an R. Traded the R for an X-T4 thinking that it would be a better backup as the spec was so similar to R6 other than the sensor size. I bought the fuji for some of the same reasons. I wanted better video abilities and the fuji was recommended everywhere as the ultimate hybrid. Initially I was a bit underwhelmed but the more I used it the more I loved it. I used to spend hours and hours tinkering with pictures in lightroom and then photoshop with my old Nikon D5600. With the fuji most of what I do is bump the shadows slightly, apply film simulation and it looks great, I don't feel like there's anything more I can add by continuing to edit. It's incredibly kind to skin, I'm often shocked at how it makes peoples skin look better than what it actually was. I take photos at my local town festival in Ireland so blushed skin is common, I used to do every one the favour of reducing the reds on the face. Not necessary with the fuji for some reason. In Davinci resolve the skin tones are nearly always in the perfect position on the vectorscope without doing anything.

That’s so awesome. It really sounds like Fuji is the perfect system for YOU! I love how much my workflow has improved. I don’t struggle nearly as much with getting those right as I have in the past on other brands.

There was kind of the same dilemma for me. I was shooting with a Canon M50, and with the release of the A7IV, the price of the A7III dropped considerable on the used marked (as a lot of A7III users were selling theirs to finance the buy of an A7IV). So I sat down, and looked at the diffrent options that were available to me. I was doing a bit of event photography, and believe it or not I HAD SD card failures, and I had the M50 lock up on me once. And I realized that for the price of an A7III used (~1600 euros used) + a couple of lenses (35mm, 85mm and a telephoto, either a zoom or a prime, about 1500 euros AT LEAST for those used) I could buy a Fuji X-T2 AND a Fuji X-T1 as backup, a bunch of batteries, a 23, 35, 56 and 85 mm primes (so 35, 50, 85 and 130mm equiv), a 12-24 adapted zoom with an 18-135 general use lens. And also get myself some new SD card and a camera bag upgrade. Worst thing about it ? It never felt like I was downgrading in anyway. I almost never use fece detect and I prefer to put my focus point on actual people so the X-T2 is plenty good for that, video is the same if not better than in the A7III (4K30p with F-Log inernally, that's a treat). Sometimes you just have to look away from the obvious option everybody is pointing at

WOW! I love this! That’s a killer deal! I don’t blame you for not wanting to pass that up. The deal I got on my XT4 was insane as well. That’s so crazy - I was ALSO coming from an M50, and had been wanting to upgrade for at LEAST two years. I’m an over thinker and spent far too long researching and waiting for the “right camera” to come along, expecting it to be a Sony or high-end Canon. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon some Fuji photographers on KZbin (after a couple years of my friend whispering “come to Fuji” in my ear lol) that I saw them in a new light and was sold. :)

@qiyuxuan9437
@qiyuxuan9437 Жыл бұрын
Nikon's IBIS is insane, I was worried about handheld video with longer zoom lens, but the result is pretty good. The main reason is the really large Z mount, which allows more room for the sensor to shift around. Sony E mount is barely enough for full frame sensor.

You made the right choice! Have a story for you : I was a canon shooter (dlsr), I decided to buy a XT3 for my pro work. Then I decided to go for the A7III given all the hype it gets, and sold my beloved XT3. I was REALLY disappointed! Didn't like the way it felt in hands, did a wedding shoot with both camera side by side, and see no difference (apart for the DOF, obviously). I decided to sell the A7III and buy another XT3! The autofocus for photos is very good, the only problem is the video AF, when set at multi zone / wide, the system is not as clever as the sony or canon cameras. I have the solution for you : if you set an autofocus box (single point) on your subject, you'll never lose autofocus! Cheers fuji mate lol

Great production yet again, these videos are so relaxing, and I really get the Fuji thing, I have sold all of my other gear and just have an X100V for every day shooting, and an X-H1 with the beautiful 8-16mm for landscapes. Your videos are a good replacement for blood pressure medication as I am a highly stressed individual. In fact, this evening I beat up my Nikon D500 and buried it in a shallow grave in my back garden.....

I had a Sony 3N and Canon T2i/m50 and eventually went on to buy Fuji X-S10. I felt excited using the film simulations and reading up about film recipes. I also have a Canon AE-1 and AT-1 film cameras so having the Fuji camera to do film simulations was nostalgic.

I just picked up the A74 so I could use my current A73 as a partner camera on shoots. Previously I was using the A7 in conjunction with my A73. Getting the A74 allows me to do something special which is to gift my A7 to a friend of mine with a very grave disease. He has always wanted a full frame camera and hopefully he can use it to focus in on being creative despite what he will be facing HealthWise. I think your video speaks to that sentiment, to use a tool and create the best content despite it not being the latest and greatest. Kudos to your content its inspirational.

Tony, that’s amazing! What a very thoughtful gift, and you’re a great friend for doing that. And thank you - I often remind myself of this when something new comes out, and that sometimes it’s not always about the tools, but how you use it and what you create with it. (There’s an innuendo somewhere in there, but I digress 😅) Thanks again for the watch and kind words. 🙏

I had a Nikon D90 (from 2010) and my interest for photography had been missing for a few years. Then we got a dog, and the D90 and passion was dusted off again! However, I could feel how it was technologically lagging behind and I felt the urge to upgrade. After looking at Nikon and Sony mainly, I came across the X-T4 and was amazed by the specs for the price. I got one and I was in awe at the technological advances, 26mpx, the 10bit 4k and 1080 240fps is crystal clear and amazing for sports/dogvideos! You could say I came for the "bang for buck" ratio, but stayed for the Fuji magic. I cannot imagine being without the clean dials and the on lens aperture ring I had no idea I needed in my life😅 So ur video explains my story pretty good as well👍

What good way to put it! “Stayed for the Fuji magic.” It’s so true. It’s truly a powerful thing, to love how a camera feels and operates. It inspires and makes the process fun again. I don’t need the best specs on paper. I just need something that’s capable to produce what I want, the way I want it. And I didn’t know that was Fuji until I owned one, and then I understood what the “magic” was all about. Thanks for sharing. 🙏✌️

Good vid! I have an X-T3 and owned the A7rIII. Honestly, very much dislike the handling on both platforms. The SX10 is the best-handling Fuji IMO, but haven't tried the new X-H2s. I love the LOOK of the XT series bodies, but the shallow grip and, more annoyingly, the button/jog dial combo on the rear that loves to exit menus, etc., while I'm still trying to rotate it is an endless pain. Apparently, this has gone away on the H2s. I know it defeats the retro functionality, but if I can't change the settings from the two dials, it slows me down too much for things like weddings. I also love the JPEG colors from Fuji and AF has gotten much better, but still can't match the latest Sony, Canon, or Nikon offerings. Fuji is doing a LOT right and their glass is excellent. Glad to see they are updating some of the screw drive AF motors to more video-appropriate offerings. Cheers.

Wonderful work here! Thank you! I’m working professionally with photo and video since 1996, and I used many different Cameras (Sony, Panasonic, Nikon, Olympus). Since 2012 I’m working with M43 (but I keep my Nikon Cameras which I use eventually), and I’m, and my clients also, more than happy with the results. I’m currently using the OM-1 and the GH5 and planning to buy the GH6. I’m a old school Videographer and yes I work exclusively in MF. But your choice for the Fuji make sense! I think that I would buy Fuji if I would start now! We just need to keep in mind that no Camera is perfect and that the creativity and edition are very important aspects, frequently much more important than the iQ alone. The Sony Cameras (also Canon) are great, but the Sony hype is very strong, and in my opinion it is nothing more than that, a hype! Undoubtedly the AF, the Low light performance and the quality of the sensors are great, but there are so many other aspects involved! I really like the results of Sony Cameras, but I just hate the usability and ergonomics. And I work daily with Cameras. In the end, nowadays the practical difference in iQ is very small between manufacturers, but usability makes all the difference. The Olympus and Nikon Cameras are a delight to use and the Panasonics are easy and smart. The FF (“Fool” frame) and Sony hypes will not get me!
@Christopher_Ray
@Christopher_Ray Жыл бұрын
100% right! "Usability makes all the difference." When one is using a camera as much as someone like you do, a camera's ability to simply "get out of your way" can't be overstated. Another viewer wrote, "The main 'feature' a camera can have is the 'makes me want to shoot' feature. If it lacks that and instead makes you feel like shooting is a chore, then it’s not a camera you should use." And I agree with this completely! I think we often get too caught up on what the newest feature is, how high the resolution goes, how many frames we can shoot per second, etc. Unless these things are roadblocks for creating what you want to create, these should honestly be secondary to whether the camera fits for your style of shooting and if it feels good to use. I've heard so many stories now at this point of people thinking one camera or another was "the one," only to find out it wasn't after spending time with it. Sounds like a relationship, doesn't it? 😂 Thanks so much for watching! More is on the way. ✌️

I've put my EOS R up for sale (don't enjoy using it) and I'm looking to get a powerful video-capable camera. Looking at the HX2S and the FX3. If Fuji had a full-frame camera, I'd be all over it. awesome video. I shoot sony and have 2x a7iv's. I moved from sony APSC to full frame about 5 years ago when starting to do professional work. I had the sony a6000, then sony a6500. the change to full frame for profressional use makes sense for me and the images look more professional.In saying that, I recently just purchased the fuji x100vi to have that light small camera fell where i can take it anywhere and do need to worry about editing the RAWs. to have a camera that didnt feel like work all the time

the reason 3 is exactly what i told my friend. and i share the same feeling. using sony feels like a computer. but when it comes to pro work is amazing. but when it comes to personal use, i dont wanna bring a expensive full frame just to "shoot" normal photos. i didnt like sony regular jpg and i have been editing alot of raw photos of sony. its a waste of time if i need to edit the jpg again if i wana get the nice color of the casual photos i took. fuji really save alot alot of my time and energy and is exactly what i need. i was able to enjoy photography again now thanks to fujifilm. i can immediately shoot great sooc jpg and upload them to my socmed. i still use both sony and fuji. both do what they need to do and deliver well. as for design wise, the fujifilm feels pretty good on my hands. but overall i still use my fujifilm like a dslr setting. the main focus has been the color and jpg.

I am an avid fan of photography because of the beauty it captures and how it brings memory more meaningful with its undeniably amazing varying colorful shots. I am not a professional photographer but someone who just loves to capture memories. I had my my very first Fujifilm X-T100 mirrorless camera and I am so happy taking pictures with it. When I found out that Fuji doesn't have a full frame mirrorless camera (I could be wrong), I started browsing and researching for the brands with full frame sensors. I am honestly quite amazed by Sony a7iv having that sensor but this video of yours makes me realize that there is something in Fuji that can capture someone who is an avid fan of taking photos. Aside from the quality pictures that this brand can offer, the design really is something that will make you more excited to go out and take photos. Thank you for this ❤ I am now having fun reading comments attesting how Fuji greatly changed their options on buying amazing cameras.

There’s a ton of value in owning a camera that makes you want to shoot! Could have the best specs ever, but if the camera isn’t a joy to use, what’s the point? Obviously, as a profession, this wouldn’t necessarily apply. But for hobbyists and enthusiasts, I think it’s a good point to consider. 😜

A lot of your reasons resonated with my own! Affordability and features at their prices are what initially drew me to Fujifilm, and it was the colors that really had me invest further. The photographic film simulations are fantastic, but what I'm really excited to see is how video simulations might later be developed. The Eterna profile made me think about baked-in video looks and textures to bypass correcting and grading in post--not to mention LUTs since I don't use them myself. With Arri adopting this "digital-stock" feature for their newest camera, I hope these are moves that direct the camera industry at large. Aside from the nerdy-tech stuff, I liked the video a lot, dude! Looking forward to more of your work as I can tell how much work you put into it. Above all, I'm super happy to see more Fujifilm shooters enter the KZbin space! I feel like we're highly underrated, and have been put into a hipster niche waiting to be broken. Let's connect! I'd love to hear more about the direction you're taking.
@Christopher_Ray
@Christopher_Ray 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for much! I agree; Eterna is an excellent profile and can really be a quick and easy final resting point for a color grade if you want it to be. And I am also looking forward to seeing how Fuji can apply the film simulations into video! I appreciate the kind words, though! To be honest, I’m not typically one for talking specs and such, but I knew for me to get the point of the video across, I needed to include at least some of it 😅. It does certainly feel like the Fuji community is most hipster-y of the bunch, but I can accept that haha. It really is a wonderful brand of camera that often gets overlooked. Can’t wait to share what else I have planned for the channel! But yes, let’s connect! My social links are in the description. :)

Glad to see more users appreciate the Fuji system. I was first on the canon system and was planning to start a photo / video business w/ it. The problem was I needed a solid cam with photo and can do videos solidly too but on a budget.... #1 option was the 90d (can do slow-mo, and can take solid photos) problem was it was a 6 digit cam in my country and it can only save to a single slot SD card. #2 a7iii which was the best by that time, of course on a budget so no go.... #3 i saw a video of the Xh1. Solid photo performance, solid 4k video w/ good color science, dual card slots and slow mo video 120fps. so i bought the xh1, then i bought some manual lenses Meike brands, to complete my focal lengths. after some months my team acquired a 2nd hand xt1, and a bunch of 2nd hand xt20. Now we're a 6 figure company in a span of one year. We still rock those fujis. :) The quality and the economy side of the fuji system made it all possible.

I bought the XT-4 too and it was amazing. I returned after 2 weeks because I realized the film simulations were overrated and only applies to the JPEG. It was a brick to me. It didn’t fit my needs. But the fact I could buy an adapter to the FF sensor on the Sony that I can have limitless film photography and endless amazing of usable lens systems for the A7iv. Took 3 prime film lenses on a road-trip thru Europe. Best decision I ever made.

You mage good points, but I can't stomach non-full-frame look as side by side it looks like a downgrade, even an APS-C. Sometimes tools are beyond our budget, like my wanting the Sony A1 that will be a massive upgrade and convenience to me minus the non-flippy screen. A7sIII will do for now but need 2 bodies for weddings/interviews.😋
