Great video... Your videos helped me decide on my Nikon Z system. I am not changing, that Sony might be a great camera and if I had unlimited income sure I might consider Sony. But I don't. And the Nikon Z works for me. But I did notice something in the video, and this is a compliment, no matter what camera or lens you showcase in a video your images look the same. Amazing! I think the one thing you should showcase more is your STYLE because no matter what camera your images look the same. You prove so many times, it's not just the gear but the photographer!

@Phillip Banes I don't doubt that the RX100V is outputting great colors, it's a great camera! It's one of their newer model cameras. As I mentioned, their newer cameras are getting better. It's native color profiles (if you don't shoot raw) that are weak in Sony. Also if you miss exposure, the red channel (and green channel) go wacky real quick when correcting exposures. 7:55 Omar discusses and shows examples of skin tones. If you're happy with your camera, ignore my comment and keep creating! Cheers.

I had the sony a7c (of course not the a7iv) and switched to the x-h2s, as i have a x100v and want to stick to one system. From my experience the autofocus of the x-h2s is very good. But of course you will miss the touch tracking feature of the sony. With the fuji you can't use touch tracking in video mode. Besides that eye autofocus works fine.
@_maximilianhinz

@@erik6678 I had a little bit of a hands on in our local store just now, from a stills perspective I found the X-H2s was at least as good as the A7III. Of cause then there is the touch/ object tracking of the A7IV. But who knows what a firmware update might be able to do. But still, you could track an object with a half pressed shutter in stills mode. For sure there are a lot of things still to explore and test.

I switched from fuji xt4 a year ago to the Sony A7 IV and although Fuji was good, I find the Sony A7 IV much more reliable in eye auto focus, tracking all kind of subjects, low light capabilities and not to mention a plethora of third party lenses available. The bigger sensor paired with a wide aperture lens make a big difference when pushing the ISO high. I've always shoot raw so colour science is not a deciding factor as I like to apply my own looks to my pictures. Plus a7iv video output is just beautiful. The fuji xt4 was a fantastic camera, but for my needs, I cannot see myself ever switching back to cropped sensor after Sony. Love my a7iv.

Great video Omar. I agree with you - I’m patiently waiting for the Z6iii. Hoping the autofocus is close to that of the A7 series. I may even go for the rumored upcoming Z8. I use a Z6ii right now and love it - but the autofocus is definetly not as good as the A7iii that I used last year. The color science and RAW processing of the A73 just never satisfied me. Appreciate the time you take to make these videos for us. Peace

@Phillip Banes in perfect lighting conditions it was alright - but if you were shooting outdoors in harsh lighting or dark shadows - the Sony skin tones would always seem alittle “off”. It's the autofocus that brings me to this juncture where I am contemplating whether to buy this and keep my Fuji XT-4, or trade-in the Fuji to get this plus a nice lens. Sad because I love the Fuji and we only get into arguments about the focusing in video, which is weak. The question now is whether I would miss the Fuji or not.

Cameras are just tools - no need, to be a fanboy! Really??? When I started more serius photography back in the 80s I got myself a Canon A1. Semi-Pro with a motor and some expensive FD glass. Then came autofocus and all that FD glass was wothless. Not so with Nikon. They just put a little srewdriver on their cameras to operate the AF. This is when I switched to a Nikon F4. Horrible AF but man, that body was REALLY PRO! Then I bought more and more Nikon F glass over the time. Switched to Digital with a D100. Again Pro look, but bad performance. Still have it, because nobody wanted it used. Then I got a D300 and things changed again. Real good AF, high speed photo fps and again a PRO feeling. And then a D700 - Finally full frame again! Man, I miss this camera. Only 12 MP, but shot my best selling images with it. Then I got a D800 - the diva. Great pics, but again tough to handle. Then a D810: D800 image qualty without all the D800 hickups. Then a D750. Areal workhorse, great low light performance, but somehow boring. The last DSLR I bought was a D500 - to be able to film in 4K. It was the best sports camera, but I never got used to it. Then I switched to mirrorless: selling my D810, D750 and D500. I got a Z6 and a Z7 then. At first I was really disappointed, because my AF hit rate was really bad. It got better over the time, due to practise. But never in the range of the DSLRs. Now it's time to move to a newer generation mirrorless camera. And yes I know, the logical thing would be to get a Nokon F to Sony adapter and move on with one A74 and a A7Rx: But as of now I decided to wait for the first used Z9. Why? Beause I am a fanboy. 🙂

HMMMMMMMMMMMmmMmMmm. I've rented the A7IV and liked it, but lately, I've been leaning toward Nikon z6ii mostly because I think it's a much better value, so it's interesting to hear you tout the value angle. I can get z6ii at B&H right now for $600 less than an A7IV - that's not chump change. What is it about the A7iv that makes you believe it's worth that extra 6 Benjamins and still qualifies as a good value by comparison?

Cameras are from sports teams we need to be fans of and fight people in youtube comments about, because if the media (youtube photography influencers) keep saying one camera is a better tool for microscopic differences, everyone becomes a fan of one team and some others get kicked out of the league. It's so horrible that, when 50 pictures get taken at an event, 5 are out of focus. Perhaps be a better photographer? Perhaps 45 images are enough to deliver? Yes, cameras are tools. All of the tools are better than the person using them. It's amazing how infrequently these videos remind us, "It's the photographer, not the camera". Because even youtube photography influencers make money from promoting the new cameras. The biggest flaw with this is that for most of us, the camera should be the tool we get for 3-5 years, not 2-3. And the system should be the one we use for the rest of the decade. Switching systems is *really* expensive, and youtube photography influencers completely understate that. They can sell things privately in ways most of us can't because they have hundreds of thousands of subscribers and someone will agree to a private sale at a relatively high price. Regular photographers would get a lower price and have the costs of whatever site they post on, like eBay, so we're likely to get only 1/3 of our purchase price. KZbin photography influencers need to please start being more honest.

Ciao amico mio. You are the only one who notices that Sony's strength is not so much the reliability of the AFC, but the practicality of its use. Two other things about the A7M4 that nobody talks about are: the possibility of seeing with the flash mounted on the hot shoe the actual exposure of the environment, with the other machines you have to turn off the flash. And, in the video field, in addition to switching instantly with the appropriate dial, regardless of the priority set by the PASM dial, you can independently manage the exposure triad with a combination of dials and buttons. So you can work in video with priorities and automatisms different from photos, without having to change the PASM dial from time to time

Sounds like the A7IV is a nice camera. And even though a camera is just a "tool" I don't think people necessarily have to switch out their entire system just because another manufacturer has raised the bar on certain features in a new model. Their current system most likely will come out with a similar model. The different camera makers usually leap frog each other in product development over time. It may be a different situation for photographers who do a lot of paid work and the new camera really helps them out in a concrete way.

With what I know now I would probably buy a Sony as it's indeed the better camera with more lenses. Now I'm in the Fuji ecosystem and I'm not going to sell 7 lenses just so I can shoot with a slightly better camera. Moreover, the (full frame) Sony lenses are by no means cheap. But most importantly, the X-T2 is fun to shoot, I'm not sure if I would say the same about the A IV.

3rd party is great on Sony and quite a bit cheaper a lot of the time. But Fuji is getting there as well... Everyone is really, except Canon R. Nikon Z is just waiting for it and they have a couple (rumored to be) rebranded Tamron lens designs in their current line up. Every system has its pros, even Canon R, but the latter definitely rides a thin line between being good on hardware and frustrating on user experience / support regarding the eco system.

Hello Omar! Great video again (stated this one year ago!). Looked in the comments and didn't found anything. How do you compare the A9 vs A7IV in terms of autofocus for your event work? I have the A7iii and since i'm doing more events (baptisms mostly) i'm looking for a second camera and looking on these two. Greetings from Portugal!

This is so reassuring. Yesterday, I traded my Nikon Z6 ii and lenses for an A7IV and two lenses. I’d rented the Sony 3 times just to make sure on my choice. The autofocus is pure witchcraft. The workflow was so much easier on the Sony. I’ll be shooting film on my Nikon F100 until the new gear arrives.

I have a ton of cameras and I just love my A7iv for both photos and videos. It's my go to camera for my KZbin thumbnails which is the highest praise from me. The video is great as well. I think Sony hit the ball out of the park with this one! Cheers.

Hi Omar. I follow your channel from the very first time I use fuji. I used xe, xt, xs, xh,... and find some struggles when focusing, noise and raw editing. And as a fuji lover, i tried to move to GFX, the GFX 50sii, which is a totally wrong choice for my needed. I sold it 3 months later. Then move to a7iv. I totally happy with it. The best focusing i've ever use. I just need to think about the composition. The noise is ok with me. The raw editing also ok. Its jpeg is awesome, very trendy but I still miss the fuji color 😁. The most feature that i miss from fuji is the display review images. I can continue shot on evf but when i need to see review image, i just need to look on LCD. I cannot find this useful feature on Sony. Just want to share my thought and experience. Thank you so much for all the things you did in this channel 😁

I found color in the A74 better than past Sony's. I use a color checker passport to create color profiles. Works for me. For Fuji colors....use a cheap, old, used Fuji!

I do agree, Sony cameras are absolute workhorses But as far as camera goes, they do not make me feel anything while shooting (which, as much as we would want not to think it is true, is an important part of our creative process). A Sony camera is a camera I'd pick up if I was hired for a contract, shoot an event, a wedding, photojournalism, that kind of thing where you don't have to think about creativity that much, you only have to think about how to capture the moment in the best way possible. In those instances, Sonys just get out of your way : under or over exposed? Not to worry dynamic range is enough so you can correct it later. Not an autofocus king? Don't to worry the Sony AF system is going to nail it everytime. That's te camera that allows you to just immerse yourself in the situation you're in, and that allows you to completely forget about your camera altogether. When I'm shooting landscape, street or travel photography however, I want to have a camera that isn't the perfect tool, that is actually fun to shoot with. I'm not really shooting film these days with the prices of film going up, but when it comes to digital, I'd use my Fujis or my D700 because having fun while taking pictures is just as important as the pictures themselves.

Who says the Sony isn't fun? And, I don't need to feel anything while shooting. I feel it when I get back to the computer, and all my client's images are in focus!! lol..I kinda like that feeling. I think working photographers appreciate it.

I won’t necessary agree. If Sony allows to pay less attention to the technical side of taking pictures, that’s exactly when your creativity should be freed up. 100% of your brain ressources might be focused on that…. A lot of Fuji users find the XT line fun to use with their dials and manual thing. I rented the xh2s for a weekend (which you can do for free in the UK by the way!) and had a lot of fun with it.

Is there an end to "The best camera ever" lifecycle? At which point do we stop trading old equipment with new? I have seen 12MP photos shot with old gear (Canon 5D, Nikon D700, etc..) that blow the mind. Here we are in 2023 and we're still spending ridiculous money on new equipment and yet only use 10% of their capabilities. I for one stopped trading two years ago, I admit I bought into the camera gadgetry for quite a while, then I realize what I was doing, sold old all my gear, bought a decent used FF camera and spent my money on lenses.

Hallelujah ! The truth!!!! Yes I shoot Fuji too BUT the Sony cameras are just easier, full frame (with all its creamy bokeh, low light glory and dynamic range) and autofocus mastery. Been shooting Sony at every level for 15 years and only just purchased the X100V which brought me to YOU!!! Love your work! Your attitude and HONESTY!!! The Fuji experience has been phenomenal, joyful time for me this year BUT Sony just does it!! My Sony cameras: a7SIII, FX3, a7C, a7III, a7S, RX1 & RX1R2 and F55 Fuji camera: X100V and love it...for fun. Ive learned a ton from you about all the Fuji gear. THANKS OMAR!!

Very nice summary. Having used the A7M4 for 6 months I agree with most. However, I found the color tweaking not so straightforward. I'm grateful you're mentioning this point. My advice to anyone who's interested - be aware that for landscape photography with this camera you may require to do some serious color tweaking beyond "auto WB". It's better for people, snappy colors etc. But greens, browns, blues, greys (clouds in they sky) - they were challenging to work with for me.

7:27 I have the same issue with shots being a little under exposed , but come out great after lifting shadows . When I look thru the evf it looks perfect but after I review them in camera they are often a lil dark , so if I can I make adjustments and shoot it again .

I'm so mad! Just about to upgrade my Nikon kit to Z6ii and this is better in so many ways. The dust door on the shutter, the card slots, and the foolproof autofocus.. It is more expensive than z6ii somewhat however. This will hopefully be what the z6iii is like, if that ever comes along...

i can't really stress enough how much an improvement the video quality is between the a7iv and the a7iii. It's another level, and I'm sure that 10-bit color helps quite a bit. This camera however tends to be too sharp, so dial in the detail to at least -6 or ideally -7, and it also looks a lot more organic in certain situation if you can add a filter that will bloom the highlights a subtle amount.
