People often focus on mechanics, but Imo the largest difference between ranks is the speed; how quickly you notice changes, things around you, misplays by the opponent, and how quickly you make decisions based on all of the above.

I really think it's positioning. I agree with you that you can spot players who are out of their ELO by how uncomfortable they are with the speed of the game at higher ranks, but I think the biggest reason most people can't climb or get stuck is positioning. Up thru plat you'll see soldiers and ashe's who position on low ground all the time, even on maps with extremely advantageous high ground positions like numbani, you'll see Soldier standing on the cart. Or they will take high ground and surrender it as soon as they're challenged. People position where their healers either can't see them or have to make themselves vulnerable to keep sight. People push all the way up to spawns and then seem surprised when they get wiped. I just don't get it. Like... They have a rein. He can't hit you with his hammer if you stand up here. Why are you not standing up here? Every time I get into a gold game or watch a video of gameplay in that bracket I'm just astonished by how many DPS die to Reinhardts because they just literally do not understand where they should be standing.

Speed is definitely one aspect. I notice on my accounts in lower tier comp, my team mates are often 20 seconds behind what SHOULD be happening. It's frustrating.

Positioning is also contextual; there's plenty of times that I don't position perfectly simply because I can get away with it, which to some degree comes from how quickly I'm analyzing/reacting to the situation. But yes you're correct, we can make those calls in the moment because on the back end we know what good positioning is/isn't in the first place.

I can say at plat these are the most common things done on plat n below… hugging objective and letting the team make space, (“because you have to play the objective”).. pushing the same choke or pathway to your death when there’s clearly other ways around. Not getting the high ground. Everyone always pushing main, no support on Dps trying to get off angles. I had to adapt to all that to rank outta plat.

1 tip I have, try to solo queue and/or duo atmost when climbing from Plat. if you do a 4/5 stack, you are more likely to run into boosters/smurfs

Right. I’m a GM player and have a Smurf so I can play with my friends who are plats (I play off characters so I don’t carry to hard). We win a fight and I go push up and die absolutely baffled. Look back and everyone standing on the payload doing the exact opposite of what you should be doing. Being “good” at the game can actually life more difficult at lower tiers to a degree

Played junkrat, got a triple, including both supports, died to an awesome shot from their widow. Team loses 4v2 against a sigma and a widowmaker. "Rep our junk for feeding" and "you died first so we lost the fight". Actually, I died fourth, after the enemy kiriko, ana and soldier.

I’ve been stuck in plat and no matter how hard I performed and did my best, I still lose games. My best tip for anyone who wants to grind comp is to give up. The matchmaking system sucks, the only value you would ever get is a hostile personality and an aggressive attitude that would mess up your reputation in real life. Comp really tests your mental and for people like me who get triggered easily, I would say to abandon comp, and embrace QP, Arcade, and Custom Game mode. Or just play any game besides overwatch. You’ll thank me later

the difference between plat and gm is generally time played per season and raw mental strength. I've met tons of GM1 players with no mechanics but an amazing mental game. I second this advice.

Most people simply aren’t built for this game, and have no clue, but you were smart enough to recognize that, and not waste your time, or others anymore. Congratulations, you’re smarter than most overwatch casuals. Some people know they shouldn’t even be playing this game, but to stubborn to stop playing even though they know they’ll never get better. This is not an easy game, but when you get good it’s fun. Problem is most people won’t ever “get good” at it cause they simply don’t have what it takes, or not willing to put in the effort. They wana be carried, but you can only get carried so far, and so much until the lack of skill, game sense, mechanics, experience, and mental strength can no longer be ignored to the point you realize you were the problem all along, not your teammates. I truly believe most people should uninstall this game, and let the rest of the player base play against each other. If you have a true desire to improve then I’d say keep playing no matter how bad you may be at the game, you will learn eventually even if it takes a long time, but if you play without any intent on improving you’re basically wasting your time which is what I feel most casuals do. They hop on a match, sit in spawn, intentionally feed, leave games for no reason, talk about nonsense in the chat no one cares, or wants to hear about, ect. Also cheaters, and hackers should stop playing the game as well, those are even worse in my opinion, but eventually they will all learn one day. Lol

Been doing that to me in silver, when it shows the match rank as your next rank, if you lose it rationalizes that you don't belong to that rank regardless of your performance. Shit sucks, I would play with friends if that's an option for. (Isn't for me they're on pc)

@@GodKingChris that’s actually the most annoying part, my losses were on one division above (both Bronze 4) but I won out the higher bronze and low silver lobbies. My friends who were all watching (because it’s a running joke in our group) were stunned because the other team DPS and supports were like “nice matchmaking blizzard” “nice Smurf account soldier.” It’s just so defeating after working hard at improving my mechanics (this has been my biggest improvement point, the thing that’s been holding me back) and maximizing my gamesense to just be relegated to the lowest tier without any ability to climb. It’s aight tho, I’ve been playing Valorant recently and their rank progression actually makes sense so I’ll get my ranked fix there. Good luck, brother!

The reason for that is bronze 5 is a massive rank. If you think of it in SR it's from 0-1100, so even though you might have climbed 300 SR you're still in bronze 5. Also valorant has shit rank progression, it's based off of performance instead of just straight win-loss, so if you play a supportive character you don't climb, and the best play is to bait your team-mates for kills so you can climb.

My support and tank roles are waaayy higher than my DPS rank. The thing I’m having trouble with is, because I’m good at those roles I play a certain way to set my team up for success. However, I keep expecting the same to be done for me when I play dps and it just DOES NOT HAPPEN. Like I’d expect a support to support a push, and they just won’t. Like a kiriko instead of healing then throwing a shiriken just opts for throwing shurikens and not healing. Or a Winston to fall back get healed then push with the dps but instead just jumps even further in without his shield and 1/4 health. It throws all my plans out the window on dps. I’m not sure how to adapt for those situations. I typically at that point just switch to a long range character and sit back and try to get picks from afar which is super boring and completely inefficient.

I've noticed this recently. OW1 I was on a crap PC with literally 10fps and terrible ping so I ended up hardstuck in gold. In OW2 I've got way better hardware so I climbed to plat immediately, but I was still pretty bad at awareness/positioning due to playing against bad players who usually wouldn't punish these errors. Then I started playing with some friends in diamond/masters and after getting bodied at first, soon I adapted to the faster pace and needing to use natural cover etc. Not playing ranked atm but I feel way better at the game and I'd guess I'm also somewhere in that diamond or maybe low masters rating. I've even come across some GM and top 500 players in my games and while those games were tough, I didnt get wrecked like I would've a year ago.

I hate to bring you that news but even with higher-ranked players in your QP lobby doesn't make it a high-ranked lobby. Many times people are just screwing around and playing with roles they don't usually play. Also, the matches are generally wider than in a comp, so you get players ranging from almost 3 elos below or above you. I say this because I used to think I was much better qualified after playing lots of QP and seeing people's profiles, but then got frequently stomped at comp which is usually a different kind of match. Also, plat is the old gold from OW1. Because the population increased, elos have spread and there are too many new players who are either new to the game or to the FPS genre, so they are most likely being placed at lower elos such as bronze and silver. The older playerbase just by knowing the game a little bit better naturally climbed. To be fair, I'm not saying your play hasn't evolved, but by what you're saying it's possible you could be misled by wrong variables.

My problem with overwatch is trying to get all the info I can on my own by visually seeing opponents just to get a grasp on what is happening but it kills me a lot, certain characters like sombra, tracer, and widow are the characters I do well against cause I don't have to find them they will just be behind me or someone alone when the fight starts. I play tank in ranked and everytime it's the same thing , ( plat ) i have to hyper tryhard everygame because the dps gap is HUGE , just yesterday ennemy team does a ton of damage and kills in a payload map , go to the second round end one of my dps is doing 3k dmg and is like 2/0/12 i told him to stay behind me with a bastion but the dude wasnt able to deal damage we lost in a very tough fight on the third map , it's always like this , and sometime you feel like tank is a pain because they play ana zen cassidy and you know that they are just gonna cancel you everytime you try something as a tank even if you swap the ennemy tank is counterpicking with the dps it's like playing rock paper scissor but with only the scissor option even if you swap

I usually play with a friend thats GM on tank but we still loose a lot because low elo and high elo are 2 completely different things and they played differently. GM is a coordinated team game and low elo is 10 middle age men with anger issues scream at each other for 15 minutes. Honestly I just feel like ranking up you kinda just have to play a lot and you'll get there eventually but it's gonna be the most miserable experience ever (im hardstuck gold and i already wanna rip my hair out)

I am a gm player, ive swapped to almost exlusively qp, mostly because theres less toxicity in qp. I love doing scrims and having genuine high level play, but the ranked experience just isnt that. QP warlord for me nowadays, even of they are sometimes just as sweaty as a comp match. Now when i play comp, i only do it with a duo, and we just stay in our own group chat

I've went from silver back in 2020 to masters in OW2 and peaking rank 396 on DPS (beginning of the season so it doesn't really count lol) and I sort of disagree with what you said about mechanical skill based off of what I've seen. Climbing through each rank, I saw a big difference in mechanical ability, and that doesn't just mean aim. Mechanics refers to movement, ability usage, and your overall execution of any physical actions. I don't think my game-sense is that good, but I got to masters one tricking soldier due to mechanical skill. While Overwatch and OW2 are amazing games, I think that people are way too obsessed with ranking up. Once you get to a higher rank, you realize that it's the same game, everybody is just more skilled. I'm now done with the game because I don't see myself going anywhere with it and I'm ready to move on, but it's a great game and tons of fun.

I dont think i understand this game and how other people view team fights. In most team games the Tank will take the heavy damage while support heals him and another support heals or props up the 2 damage players. In this game it seems like a tank just does their own thing. And I dont get it.

Hey so theres like a 0% chance you see this but i like really need help and idk what to do, if anyone else can help that would be great but basically its like every team i get in comp is not ready to face the enemy team, almost every game I do the best out of my team and the enemy team who is rolling my team, no matter how many supports or dps i pick off my teammates seem to loose every team fight and I cant win a game at all. I try to keep a positive mindset every game and encourage my team by saying we got this and lock in, in the begining, i give helpful callouts and ask them to switch to better characters or give advice on how to play but most times they dont litsen, I'll say stuff like "guys we can go mei against the enemy dva" or like "could you swap orrisa because going hog into ana is not working right now" or something like "guys were allways spread out and getting picked off we should play together" and no one ever litsens, theres even some games where no one wants to join team chat, and when i ask in chat they outright say no. I dont really know if im the one thats doing something wrong or im super unlucky, but its making the game very unplayable for me (im mid plat to low diamond rn) and I just dont know what to do anymore, im really discuraged and want to quit honestly I really need help.

See I make TONS of mistakes. I'm plat 5 on DPS and bronze in both Support and Tank. I do blame my teammates I expect them to at least hold their own. If it's a few kills apart idc 15-2 and 13-6 is reasonable to me I can work with that but if I see 20-6 and 18-12 it's like okay this is hard. I'm not good enough to carry a full team but I can definitely hold my own or even perform better than the opposite role

Nah I disagree with the state of matchmaking it’s a variable every time and if you have teammates leaving or just actually throwing it can definitely hurt the comp grind. I think there are plenty of people that get stuck in ELO hell or just get stuck with bad luck

Depends, some people say they're hard stuck but they just don't play enough. Also you can easily deserve plat 5 and be stuck gold 3 since the skill difference isn't enough to out-weigh randomness without a lot of games. Obviously no one is stuck in gold 3 and deserves diamond 3

@@rgutierrez595there is no such thing as elo hell. If I flip a coin 20 times and only 5 times I get heads, sure that’s an unlucky event That has NO BEARING on my future flips. Same concept in ranked. Yes, you might get stuck for awhile but if you play enough games, your rank is what you are
