I was exhausted just watching :D Loved it though so thank you for sharing. Also thank you for mentioning the collection permit and following the rules. It could go without saying but I really appreciate that you always mention it. My personal opinion here but I feel collecting wild animals such as you do or rearing corals or fish that spawn in captivity is taking the hobby to the next level. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing. All the best to you and yours in 2025.

Thank you. I’m starting to get more questions regarding permits and rules. I think I should keep showing the permit, and maybe do a video discussing the permit structure eyc

There’s definitely something unique about that river mouth. I’d guess it’s plenty of flow , the way the EAC dips in toward the coast and the huge amount of rubble structure on the banks for habitat

Happy New Year to you and yours big fella! I love these collecting vids. The make me appreciate how hard the professional collectors must work each day to get us our fish for the hobby. I'm assuming that cyanide is now banned from being used to collect fish particularly in the Phillipino area's? I do hope so. Those poor fish never last long once in captivity
@australianaquarist2 күн бұрын
Hi Nicholas. I’ve only ever bought Australian hand collected fish. I’ve never kept an imported fish, so don’t really have first hand experience with cyanide affected fish. I believe that it is banned in all countries, however I’m sure that doesn’t stop some collectors.

Happy new year Adam. Another fantastic vid, so many fish species. I’ve got Cardiff bay close to me, defo not on the same level. Do you have to be wary of sharks. Pete 🇬🇧
@australianaquaristКүн бұрын
Hey Pete, I’m always a bit conscious of the possibility of sharks, especially in estuaries and deep river channels like this one. It was very clear that day, so safe. This river is a bit of a highway for bull sharks to get up to the wide and murky freshwater stretches of the river. That means they’ve got to pass through that exact spot to get out to the ocean. I’ve been recommended to look at wearing a magnetic SharkBand deterrent. Probably a good idea.
@petesfishroom1580Күн бұрын
@ Thanks for the reply, defo get something to hopefully protect yourself. Quite a few products on the market now. Just looked freedom + surf it has shown to repel whites & bull. Can’t wait till the next vid. Cheers Pete 🏴

If you want to email through the details of the fish- coral munching attributes, size, temperament and price, and I’ll contact a few people. I’m not thinking about the fish for Palau Reef. I do have a 4x3x2 peninsular tank to set up, but it’s completely at day 0 atm and I’ve got stacks to do before.

In an aquarium? I love them. Get 3 or 4 as small juvi’s and they grow up into 3 girls and a dominant male. Some people report aggression. I’ve never experienced any aggression or predatory behaviour, only spawning. They need big tanks though. They’re fast

Are there any corals in this estuary??
@australianaquarist2 күн бұрын
No. It’s all the rocky, rubble sloping down to the deeper sandy channel. But the juvi fish have stacks of shelter in the rubble, and the river mouth is really wide with a tonne of water movement in and out. I think the East Australia Current must pass by pretty close to its mouth, because there’s some pretty amazing stuff in their some years

Why you keep calling a beach a river?
@australianaquaristКүн бұрын
I’m Not sure of the distinction in your home country, and I guess ever country can be different. A river starts as small freshwater creeks in the hills, which join and become a river. The freshwater flows to the coast as a river, getting bigger as more creeks join it. Eventually it has to join the ocean. This is the river mouth. River mouths and the first kilometres of large rivers, have a lot of tidal movement and water going in from the ocean, and pushed back out again on an outgoing tide. These areas often grow oysters and mangroves. So in Australia a river is called a river until it joins the ocean. Rivers start freshwater and become brackish, tidal and then saltwater. In Australia, the word “beach” is usually used for sand on the edge of the ocean. Like “Bondi Beach” in Sydney. However, people who live inland, sometimes refer to the sandy banks of their local river, as a beach also. Hope this clarifies ?! Cheers

No problem getting down and staying down, I just couldn’t stay still in the current. More lead won’t help in this scenario. I think I’ll go back on a smaller high tide, so that the tidal flow is less
