Quite a few times I have met families and have gotten a strong feeling that ends up with my brain saying "they did not produce that child." Every time this has happened, I later found out that the child was adopted. There is something there.

​@@airybrookThis made me think of a guy I used to play cricket with years ago. When his son was about 4, he said to his dad 'you're not my real daddy'. My mate did already have a tiny suspicion that something was off, so he did a DNA test discreetly. Turns out his wife had an affair and it wasn't his kid. They are all still together as far as I know, so it had a happy ending all things considered. No one knows how the kid knew something was off though.

I was born in the late 60s, and upon birth suffered immediate withdrawal from the high dose of diazepam my mother had been prescribed throughout the pregnancy, - it went unnoticed until I was about 3, and subsequently shaped my entire life, and lifestyle choices. I never blamed my mother, or father, or the doctors, she is an absolute angel, - spent her whole life looking after severely disabled children. - What can't be changed, MUST be accepted. -

My grandmother often spoke to me about the children and babies she looked after (foster carer). She mentioned how she would wonder in amazement at the little babies who would instinctively react in a positive way when reintroduced to their biological mothers.

I call the man who raised me 'my Dad' and the man who sired me 'my father'. I always feel uncomfortable when people call 'strangers' their Mom, Dad or parents as I think it totally obliterates the years of love and commitment provided by those who raised a child as if it was their very own.

I’ve never met much of my extended family; never wanted to, wasn’t interested. My dad died when I was 13. He had like 10 siblings. One of them, one uncle, I remember had visited me and my mom when I was about 14 or something, I don’t remember much but I liked him. He sent me postcards every now and then, I didn’t think about it much. One day he sent me a letter a an invitation to come see him in his hometown. I might have been 20 then. I went there, I remember feeling oddly…happy, on the train, and when I met him at the station…I felt like I’d come home. He was the only one I felt like that with amongst all of my uncles and aunties and what have you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My maternal grandparents passed away more than 30 years ago. I’m in my 30s and my mom recently mentioned that both of her parents had blue eyes. My mother has greenish brown eyes. I told her it was unlikely for a person with her eye color to be born of two blue eyed parents. I purchased an Ancestry DNA kit for her, and she found out that her father was in fact a man that had lived down the street from her mother and the man she thought was her father. She said it was a very unpleasant thing to find out. Much of her extended family said that they already knew, and just didn’t think it necessary to tell her.

There are about 16 genes that contribute to eye colour so it's not that unusual for children to have a different colour eyes to their parents, but apparently having an 'unexpected' father is surprisingly common.

@@MajesticArtimus We’re happy to know. We had some issues matching our family tree with our 23andMe reported ancestry, and those are cleared up now. My uncle was kicked out of the hospital when my mother was born for claiming that my mother was someone else’s (black) baby. That story makes sense now. My mom actually grew up knowing her biological relatives, so she has friends that she now knows to be her family. It was a bit of a shock, and her biological father was a convicted rapist, which is disturbing, but we prefer to know the truth. I don’t why she wouldn’t have the right to know who her father was.

It’s clear to me that everyone of my sister’s eight grandchildren instinctively know she is their grandmother from birth. They react differently towards her than they do to me. It’s quite fascinating

Because there are ethical questions around artificial insemination and the various problems it presents (frozen embryos, and this guy having hundreds of siblings amongst them- imagine the potential for accidental incest). Its an interesting question worth exploring.

I think it was Billy Connolly who pointed out that your own farts don't smell that bad - it's other people's farts that really stink. It's how you can differentiate your own offspring from the rest of the herd. That could by why shit stinks in the first place - it's a way to recognise your own tribe.

I thought this was a little odd when watching the full interview.....and almost self-servingly, self-fulfilling while seeming to WANT to identify as something. There are so many complexities in/to what makes an individual person that we'll probably never know the full extent, especially when choosing to focus on (and pick) the self-serving parts.
