Probably an OptiPlex 3010. I got one off eBay for $110 shipped four years ago with an i5 and 16gb ram. Held up with a 750ti then an rx 580 pretty well (after power supply upgrade). The 7010 and 790 was when Dell switched to the proprietary PSU connector.

Nope not the 790. The 790(2nd gen) is actually older than the 3010(3rd gen). There is also the Optiplex 990 which is pretty much exactly the same as a 790 but one of them has different RAID support or something. I have both a 990 and 790 motherboard and they both are still from the time when Dell still used standard connectors and stuff. An Optiplex 3010. If you know what to look for, very recognizable. The X010 series were the last series which did come with a 24-pin connector on the mobo. Oh god these things are so hard to covert to a sleeper. I did it for an optiplex 7010 with an asrock b450m steel legend and a Vega 56 and the front panel headers are very proprietary (especially the usb2/audio header), there are pin outs on forums but be prepared for front panel audio to not work. You also need either a dremel or a sacrificial screw and a lot of force because the hard drive cage is part of the case. You can actually attach a 120mm fan/AIO in the front with 2 screws once the hard drive cage is removed, so I’m very much looking forward to how the next video will look
@Davidx_117

Wouldn't it be easier to use a drill bit + drill and drill out all the rivets since the HDD cage is riveted in? It's what I plan to do, and the front I/O I'm thinking of using a 5.25" bay to USB & 3.5/2.5" drive adapter and covering up the old I/O (I don't use front audio ports, and I've also heard front audio ports are not optimal anyway due to interference but I believe it varies based on cable quality). As for the proprietary power/reset cable that should be easy enough with soldering and heat shrink tubing onto standard connectors

Sandy and ivy bridge were really where that style of optiplex MT got it’s start. Before this is the LGA 775 based optiplex 780 which have the black plastic front panels sandwiched between 2 storm grey side panels. 2nd and 3rd gen intel use the same socket of course, so the relatively free of proprietary garbage design was maintained until Haswell came around. if you do build this pc up, just remember they have a tendancy to use proprietary front panel connectors.. pin out guides and pin extension cables will be your best friend.. i ended up cutting and soldering my case connectors when i changed my case, and in hindsight i would have preferred using the pin out extension cables instead.. just a heads up

Dawd, Thanks for the video. I always enjoy your content. However, ... I think calling it a scam computer does it a disservice. It looks, to me, to be a responsibly upcycled PC. Contrary to your sarcasm, used PC upcycling is still a relevant thing. There really is no need for a student to struggle with the horribly cheep Chromebooks that schools loan out. Not when a used PC can and will do the job better at a very reasonable price. E waste aside, it is the perfect PC for a fourteen - sixteen year old. It will do the task, play some game and look kool enough for them to feel good owning it. love the review. Remember kids, be humble, be respectful, and own your dignity like you can afford to share it.
@ntgm20
@ntgm20 2 жыл бұрын
You can get a new system for near that cost, minus a graphics card. The cost of the upcycled PC is what is a little ridiculous. The processor was released 9 years ago. I have some similar HP systems (no RGB, and no GT 1030, or graphics card) and 4th gen i5 that I'd let go for $120. I don't have that sweet ewaste to go with it though.
@kirkbrown1267
@kirkbrown1267 2 жыл бұрын
@@ntgm20 I have upcycled four i5 3470 computers in the last year. Each with 16Gb ram and a GTX 750ti or GTX 950. and a 1600x900 IPS monitor. None of those builds came to near the cost of building a new PC. @ $150 Flipped for a reasonable $ 250. What is ridiculous is what uninformed sellers are getting from uninformed consumers. However, when the price and reasonable expectations are given consideration, one realizes that they can get a good deal of performance for little money.
@ntgm20
@ntgm20 2 жыл бұрын
@@kirkbrown1267 I think though you missed my point on cost of a new system. I'm talking about the $550 CAD that Dawid paid. I did get a 10th gen i3 system for about $330 this year, which would almost outperform the one in David's video even with its UHD 630. You should check out my two quick videos on my $30 PC.

You know, I think we have to give the builder points here for their colour-coordinated e-waste. The headset is black with orange trim to match the case repaint and the keyboard even has an orange badge on it too. That's attention to detail, right there. Wondering now if you could fit a little LED screen where the infinity mirror is and have an AIDA64 secondary sysinfo display there. Probably not with that GPU, though!
