Hey Becky, thought I would let you know… you really shouldn’t paint your propane tank a dark color. It should be a reflective white or silver to avoid it building up pressure in the heat/sun. (I work for a propane company here in Texas and we are required to refuse service to any tank painted any color other color but white or silver/grey.). I would check with your propane company before painting it. I cannot be certain on requirements in your area, but it’s worth checking out first, instead of finding out you can’t get it filled when you need it.

I love the green stalk. My husband and I are 70 and have never been able to have a homestead. we do however own our own two-bedroom bungalow, with living room, dining room and large kitchen, with an added-on bathroom as when it was built, they used an outhouse, so you can imagine how small it is. lol we do have a nice back yard in which we grew fruit trees from seeds. we used to have a small victory garden, but I told my husband I would like raised gardens in which we could put in a good area of the back yard, I figure we may not have a homestead, but it is the next best thing. we are completely debt free, so I count my blessings every day. I love following your progress and I learn so much from you.

@@Dranma51so lovely. I’m 66 and last year downsized into my “retirement” 2 bedroom cottage in New South Wales, Australia. Luckily previous owners weren’t gardeners so I had a blank slate on my little property. Last November I installed 4 large raised beds which are producing well. I’m learning about preserving by watching Becky. My goal later this year is to install a small cottage garden (to match my house) in the tiny front space.

Do you put your chickens poo in the beds? When you clean out their area, scoop the poo into a pile to decompose so it's not "hot" for the next year. You can add it to your beds in the fall and by spring time, it will be ready to plant in. This will give you a lot of nitrogen. Chicken poo is high in nitrogen.

You can root the strawberry runners into little plastic cups that you just clip with the clothes pin to the outside of the pockets and you can have the babies grow inside the cups and then you transplant the strawberry babies to a new green stock once they're ready to be separated from the mother plant.

Plant lavender, Russian sage, fox glove, rosemary and catmint by the honey bees. The deer will not eat that and you will have glorious honey. Lavender! Lavender! Lavender! Feverfew is a perennial medicinal herb that is fantastic for pain relief, specifically headaches. You could transplant them to your bee yard but don't just toss them at the end of the season. They are precious. Also eucalyptus is a tree in some climates. Try to overwinter them please. I'd love to see that. I'm so jealous of your beautiful garden!

I love growing feverfew and live in the same area as Becky. They self sow and pop up all over the place. I love how they look, particularly from a distance, the plant forms branches that produce layers of white. I don’t care much for the smell so I would never use them as cut flowers or filler flowers in bouquets. Not many people grow feverfew, but once you have them, you’ll have them forever.

When I first started gardening way back in'94, my squash got aphids, so i ordered a box of ladybugs. It was the best thing I could've done. Every year, they came back, and I never had an aphid problem again. I believe in using insects to control insects. It actually works, and you don't risk poisoning people or animals. Becky, you might not want to trim on your determinate roma tomatoes. Since it’s only going to put on just so much growth, every branch is important. And as you know with determinate tomatoes, it will put on a main crop of tomatoes then start dying down so when it starts getting real hot it will be done before the disease and pests can hit it. Now an indeterminate tomato I will trim the fire out of it in our humid climate.

Re check your seed packet for those scarlet runner beans. Ive always seen them with scarlet red flowers. The exact shade pf scarlet can vary from seed source to seed source, but is also suppose to be indicative of missing soil nutrients too.

Becky, im great grandmother got her cabbage roses to climb. Not sure what the brand was.. but boy did they climb. She had them by her garlic and brussel sprouts, and they would start yellow, then light pink and purple. She also got her snowballs to climb to, those was white!

Becky, if you "train" pumpkins to grow up the trellis, won't that prevent them from growing large? Unless you train the small white pumpkins, that may be ok?

I don't know if Better Home and Garden still have a magazine but if so, they really need to contact you and put your beautiful garden in their magazine. Becky your garden is absolutely amazing with all the flowers intermingled amongst your produce.

I've been to the international rose garden in Portland. I can't believe how many roses there are there. They had a shop there. The roses grown there would probably grow better than the ones grown in Texas. I love roses. I have knock out roses.

I am going to buy the smaller green stalk. Thanks for the tip and the discount code! I live in Florida and the sun is brutal. I do not have enough shade in the same place throughout the day to grow flowers and herbs. The green stalk on the spinning wheels stand is a perfect solution! I have a large patio so I can roll and spin my green stalk around so that the plants are getting the right amount of sun and shade they need during the day.

I live in Arizona. Should be 115 F tomorrow according to the weather channel. 🥵 Our Okra is the ONLY thing I could get to grow this year. We had gigantic wonderful zucchini last year but this years heat has really done a number on it. So I don’t foresee anything this year. Oh well, I count my blessings for what I do get 😊

@@cynthiafisher9907 We are watering daily, VERY early morning so as not to boil the plants. They’re shaded by my fruit trees at the sunniest part of the day, but may need to use shade cloth too. I think it’s too late for this crop. Will be planting Fall crops in late August. Carrots, Bok Choi, spinach, cilantro and snow peas. We’re in between Phoenix and the California Border so our seasons are so different from Becky’s. Thankfully our lime trees are going hog wild 🥰

Becky it might be a good idea to keep the feverfew in individual pots away from the veggie garden as it is a bee repellant. If you’re relying on the bees for pollination you might find that the plants around the feverfew won’t produce.

Becky, your garden is so green and lush! The flowers are so beautiful! All of your hard work starting the seeds and caring for them until planting time is now paying off. I, too, have a garden much smaller than yours, but its growing great! Also, two Greenstalks with herbs, peppers and a couple of tomato plants. A garden may be a lot of work, but seeing the results brings me joy and satisfaction. Thank you for showing us your garden as I see how much love and care you put into it! ❤

I love the Peace Rose. You can get them as climbing or the regular kind. It's a yellowish pink rose with a delightful fragrance. It is just an elegant looking rose, in my opinion.

I started my first garden this year, It’s been doing pretty good. We canned a bunch of pickles today and I am beyond excited and so proud of us. We have been loving the squash. Our lettuce started out strong but I think I’ve been cutting them too short so they are slowing down now. My cherry tomatoes are doing good but the other tomatoes not so much. We’re in zone 8a.
