Daniel As a retired rally driver I have suffered the depression and cost of putting cars into trees and down the sides of mountains and I know what a fuckfest it is to get your car back while being financially groped all the way. That was clearly a mechanical issue - nothing to do with your driving at all. So it looks like you had the straps fail on the tank. In rally world we are used to the effects of vibration and general weakening of stuff so we replace critical parts regularly. IN rally world we have extra straps on fuel tanks because of the jumps and higher vibration and if you have the money you have more comprehensive underbody protection. Bizarre stuff happens. I had the back snap out in FWD at 136 kph (on board telemetry) on a narrow but dead straight dirt road at night with big drops on side of mountain. What happened to you reminded me of my experience. Caught it (because it was not as catastrophic as what you went through) and when we finished rally we found that top hat mountings on rear had become elliptical hence massive alignment variation at end of suspension. Only took a bit of undulation to throw the car wildly out of line at 136 kph. I have had lower front control arm mounting bolts get finger loose after 30 km of fast dirt circuit training (even though they were torqued ok at the start) and that has been enough to put the car around under brakes at speed. This is why everything gets spanner checked at a rally service., In tarmac land the effects of vibration can take much longer to emerge but they are still there and it can catch you out. Hope you get back on the track and put it behind you but think about the vibration/fatigue issue for future maintenance regimes. Cheers Peter

Thank you for sharing how much it costs to crash there. Just another reminder that things can go south, when moving at the limit. But the main thing is that you're fine. Everything else can be either fixed, or replaced.

Crashing at The Ring can have many causes, but driving with Harry's Laptimer in your field of view certainly raises the stakes. I decided to go without a year ago after some big moments. Lap time stress is gone. The fun factor stayed. Sorry for your loss. I've found out the hard way a big moment at The Ring is at best expensive. Luckily no hospital came in to play for you. Cheers. Crashing at the ring's only cheap for us Germans since our insurance covers all the damage done to other cars and the track. You're lucky you didn't hit the other car as that would've been an even bigger bill.
@dubdubdidubadubdub
@dubdubdidubadubdub 8 жыл бұрын
Are u sure about that? I heard some german insurance has exceptions for Germany. I've been trying to figure it out for a while (I live in Germany), but my German is still terrible and when I call the insurance company... well... let's say it's always a funny conversation :D
@StefanGShep
@StefanGShep 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, by German law the Nordschleife counts as a public toll road during the Tourist laps, so insurance companies can't exclude it from the basic insurance which pays for damages done by your car... Comprehensive insurance however won't pay the damages on your car though, they can exclude the Ring or they'll find a reason why they won't have to pay...at least afaik.

Actually, just about all tracks will bill you if you take out a barrier. It's part of the fine print you sign at a track day. I'm not sure about closing the track, as I've never seen that happen. It would have to be a pretty bad wreck to red flag a whole day.

Really bad luck. Exceptionally calm and measured response to the spin and the aftermath. The toll you pay to use the track (I think it's 29 euro right now?) covers basics like repaving, clearing the roadway during inclement weather, and having all those staff on hand...just like any other toll road. Given the inordinately high number of hard crashes which occur on the 'ring and the need to repair barrier damage immediately, it's reasonable that they charge the driver for those repairs. In this case, he's also paying for having to call the warden onto the site and having to clear the wreckage of his car off of the track; as he said, he's extremely fortunate that they didn't see the need to close the track because of his accident. Not saying that it doesn't suck, because it obviously does. But they're very much up front about the potential costs of an accident on the 'ring, and those barriers have saved countless lives since they were installed.
@2zz98

Thats because he were driving during 'Touristenfahrten' driving for times and doing races is illegal in that state and all crashes and rules are being handled like on the normal road. Thats because the track is open for every car and bike in this state.

we have something similar in the UK called an MoT and if your car is heavily modified it's supposed to have an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA).
@GoldenStrikePT
@GoldenStrikePT 8 жыл бұрын
We also have that in Portugal, it's called IPO, and it has a 1-year expiration date, so you have to do it every year. It has a fixed price of 30,52€ for every B-Class car. If you take a car with ANY modifications at all that are not legalized on the vehicle's documents you have your car reproved and thus illegal to circulate. If you do any modifications to the car and want them legalized you have to depend on 3rd party private companies that have special agreements with the government. They do a much wider-range test on the car then the regular IPO's (and more expensive), but with the approval the mods become legalized (you have to pay for new documents as well), so from then onwards it is just the 1 year-regular IPO. The price for legalizing can vary depending on mods, but i heard values ranging from 150 to 300€+++, plus 60€ to reprint new documents for the car. You can also have a cousin who works at a IPO facility and lend him 10€ to give you a green card and pass your illegal car, but the rules are getting tighter each day and its getting more difficult to do this "scheme".

main thing is you walk away. I nearly had a big one in 2012 on a pool of oil that a galant vr4 had dropped. so lucky. and it's shit when other factors cause an accident.

Some bad luck right there, but it could easily have ended up much worse, and for that you should probably be thankful.

Damn, that is the most terrible thing that can happen - far away from home and the car is crashed :-( Besides all that sh*t that happened, I have to admit that you're a very good driver; most people would have vaporized their car in this accident - especially on the Ring in this situation. I hope you can afford all the costs and make it back to us. Ever thought about a GoFundMe ? I mean, there are so many Ring-drivers around here and we're all a family, don't we? Best wishes from Müllenbach/Nürburgring

Sorry Danny. I know it sucks man. It's an odd thing this happen because I was under mine the other day and thought to myself "Damn the rear control arms are skinny and is that really all that's holding the fuel tank?" That was just an odd thing to happen man so don't beat yourself up or anything. Shit happens.. Hope to see you back and the car well. peace.

Glad your ok, I guess it could've been worse. Is the car going to be fixed? Looked like a real fast lap and over 500 euro to be towed off the track. FUCK!

Hi Danny, i was meant to pop over and say hello at the weekend, absolutely gutted to hear about your teg, not pretty at all. But she looks repairable! I was passenger in a blue rs when the yellows came out, got round the corner to see your teg in bits :-( could have been so much worse at that speed mate! You did well to react so quick. Hope you get her sorted, my fingers are crossed for you lad
