A back story to this...after this performance he walked off stage and Ricky Skaggs said it was a great performance and Craig told him he was glad he liked it because he would never be able to sing that song live again. Ricky told him he had to sing it...that people needed to hear it...and he took that to heart and has performed it live ever since.

I can't believe I have never heard this song until today. I lost my 19 year old son to fentanyl 18 months ago. Then I lost my mind and nearly everything else since. No one seemed to understand why I seemed to be self-destructing. Now, thanks to Craig Morgan, I know that the loss of a child can not be understood by any that hasn't gone through it. God bless Mr Morgan for the courage to put this out. I finally have hope to move forward.

Britt. A little about Craig. He served in the US Army for 17 years. I believe the last 7 or 8 as a combat medic. When he got out he did a number of different jobs to support his family, and finally got to a place where he felt his music could be what he did full time. He has done very well for himself in that regard. As to the kind of guy he is, one day he was driving home and happened upon a house fire. The Fire Dept. hadn't gotten there yet and he stopped to see if he could help. He was told there were people inside still, and he went in and carried out 2 (My memory is that they were kids, but not certain). Then when the FD arrived he pulled a hoseline and helped put out the fire. He and his family own a lake house. Kind of a getaway place. Well his son, who was 19 at the time, had gone to the lake with a couple friends for a weekend. The day they were due to drive back to town they decided to spend a little time tubing before they left. Something happened during the tubing and his son drowned. He wrote the song because that is how songwriters deal with their feelings. After his performance on the Opry, he swore he could never do it again. With encouragement from Ricky Skaggs and Craig's buddy Blake Shelton he continued to perform it. You really should watch the video even if you don't react to it. For more of Craig's music you should try "That's what I love about Sunday" and also "This ain't nothing". Do yourself a favor Britt. Watch the videos. Peace right back at you.

My husband died when he was 46. I was 41 and our sons 18 and 9. Nine years later my oldest son died, so our family was half of what it used to be. You absentmindedly set the table for all sometimes, or buy their favorite snacks while grocery shopping. Even after all this time one gets transported back to relive the loss. Not every day, but during a song like this, or randomly. My son wrote beautiful lyrics when he was about 35 or so, about his experience as a 9 and 18 yr old… being told.

I lost my brother in 1990. He was 20 at that time. I saw the pain my parents went through. My pops would suffer dementia later on in life, but up until the end, when he saw one of us kids, "Are you ok?". My dad was always close to us, but I think after Jeff was killed, this protection went even deeper. Even as dementia was claiming his mind, the one thing it held on to was his kids being ok. In the song, it shows the mom even more distraught, same happened to my mom who is 90, tough old farm girl still drives, tends her flower beds. Talks to us kids daily. She had a support group at church and us to help her through it, but, until this day 32 years later he has a hard time looking at Jeff's picture. Dad was the king of the castle, but mom rules it . This song brings me back to the day my brother was killed in that car accident on Sept 02, 1990. Beautiful song.

Beautifully-expressed reaction Britt. In fact, the most powerfully honest reaction I've seen. Music has such power to evoke any and all human emotion, and never any more so than when the artist is telling their own story., and it's a sad one. I'm very impressed that, without knowing in advance that this man was doing just that, you were able to feel the rawness and confidently assert that we're listening to a true first person story. Btw, tears are a beautiful reaction when they're caused by heartfelt emotion. Love your work. x

Im bawling my eyes out, ugly crying watching your reaction. Just watched your other reaction where you shared about your sister passing. I lost my younger brother when he was 20 and I was 22 in a motorcycle accident. Worst thing that ever happened in my life and even though I'm 33 now it feels like it wasn't that long ago. This song makes me think of my brother and every time I listen to it I grieve along with Craig. This is probably the most powerful, emotional, real, grieving a loved one songs out there. Other songs that remind me of my brother are "Say Something" A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera, "I Drive Your Truck" Lee Brice, "Who You'd Be Today" Kenny Chesney, and "See You There" Joey Feek of Joey + Rory, very sad story behind that song. Joey is singing the song about the loss of her brother (same name as my brother, Justin) in a car accident in 1994 but then later she too passed away in 2016 from a battle with cervical cancer.

You are so right. You can feel his grief and agonizing pain over the loss of his son. He's only sang it publicly a few times because it takes everything in him to sing it and get through it without puking or passing out. He talks about it in an interview. His heart was racing like crazy just talking about it in the interview. I know his pain because our 14 year old granddaughter died two years ago. I still can't take about her without my heart racing and my throat closing up because of the knot in it. Blessings!

Brit this one hit me hard. I do appreciate this. I'm pretty sure this is the first time I've heard this song. I too watched my parents go through losing a child. I was the oldest of 3. I was 11 when we lost the 7yr old baby. My folks were living in a backslidden condition with their relationship with God. With her passing the only thing that kept them going was the promise of seeing her again. I watched my folks get on fire for God and have been devoted to service for over 40 years now. My dad is a singer but not a song writer. He did write one similar to this but only was able to sing it twice. He said he could never sing it again. From my perspective watching my parents cope I can't imagine how a lost parent handles the pain. Praise the Lord for strength and mercy. Bless you and your channel
