If you can’t tell the difference between a pair of hd660s and a pair of steel series, you don’t deserve to take advantage of sound. It’s funny how you will tweak your pc to get as much performance out of it as possible and yet you shit on audio. Just foolish. Each will give a good gamer minor enhancements. If you are bad at gaming it will not help at all.

I am rocking HD660S and Schiit DAC/AMP combo and I can always hear everything before my friends do. I also used Sennheiser HD598 and some other "gaming brands" Astros A40/A50, Turtle Beach etc. I have never heard headphones sound as good as HD660S do in gaming. The best audio is just stereo headphones without any of the mixing bs "gaming headphones" companies do.

In some games it worked, PUBG for example really needed compression cause the plane and gunshots were so goddamn loud compared to footsteps so it was a perfect change to use compression. This is how it worked, let's say gunshots were playing at -4db, the plane was at 0 db and the footsteps were playing at -10db. You use compression to get the plane and the gunshots to the same level the footsteps are at and then you adjust the gain (overall volume) so it's back to the point where you want everything to be cause compression will make it quieter. This is often used in music production, radio and movies, but in gaming it's usually useless so I don't recommend it, don't overthink, just play.

I have an Sound Blaster Z and I can say that the effects of SBX settings are more apparent with an actual surround sound system. SBX Surround is actually really good at upmixing stereo sound to surround sound channels, It seems to only kick in when set to 33% with further upmixing at 66%. With headphones I believe its adjusting the delay between when your L/R headphone speakers, That delay is what your brain uses to distinguish sound sources. Crystallizer is something I just have set to what sounds good to me, I don't think does or is as dramatic of a setting as you made it out to be. Bass does exactly what it says it does, I have that set to what sounds good to me but this setting only works on headphones with speakers its greyed out. Smart Volume works at equalizing the volume between the loudest and quietest sounds, When I use this setting I just turn it to Night Mode as it works as advertised. Dialog+ does more than boost the sound spectrum where human voices are, It will move it to the center channel regardless of surround sound SBX or not. I have not tried Scout Mode but going from what I know it probably works better at least for some games than that sound blaster radar app.

I use a Creative AE-7 paired with Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's. Blows on-board sound out the water. Not because of the Creative software though (it's bad like you said). I just enable "Direct Mode" to use it as a DAC. Then I'm running that through an Atom amp (around $100). Using a custom EQ through Peace. Everything sounds great. Can never go back to on-board audio. It's like trying to go back to 30FPS games after experiencing 240hz.

Hey Frame Chasers, if you do ever want to try this concept again, but with a setup priced closer to the Arctis Pro Wireless, try out the Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee or HD 6XX with a FiiO K7 DAC/Amp. Whilst at current pricing is higher than what the Arctis Pro costs, it should in theory bring a much better gaming and music experience in comparison to the Steelseries. The FiiO K7 outclasses the SoundBlaster device by a long shot, and the HD 58X Jubilee and HD 6XX should be a walk in the park compared to the Arctis Pros and HD 560S. The difference between the 6XX and the 58X is simply that the 6XX are more neutral and have a wider soundstage and better imaging compared to the 58X but it comes at the cost of a higher power requirement. Alternatively if you don't want to dive too deep into the audiophile side of things, maybe try the Epos PC38X headphones instead. The Sound Blaster should be enough to power them, and it comes with a microphone that mutes when you push it up.

I've been using a pair of Sennheiser HD660S with a Fostex HP-A4BL balanced DAC AMP. Custom Balanced XLR cable that costs more than most gamers' headsets. Been about 3 years, wouldn't trade them for anything. It won't change much in games though unless the game has an actual Hi-fi or Lossless Audio option ingame. Then it's quite pleasant at high volume. But for music and shows? It's a godsend. It sucked having to replace much of my music library with Lossless FLAC. I still haven't come close to completely converting it 3 years later cause I'm lazy. Another thing that sucked was the process of finding the right Balanced cable. Originally I used a cheaper custom cable, but it was made with heavy AF paracord. Then I tried some lighter weight ones that said they weighed the same as Sennheiser reference cable, but I immediately noticed my gain levels dropped so that was a no go. Then I went big and got the uber cable that's lighter than reference AND sounds as good as the super heavy paracord one. Learned the hard way that cable weight is the difference between comfort and misery and they're not all created equally when it comes to audio quality. I don't expect gamers to invest in this kind of stuff though. It's very pricey. I probably spent about $1000 on the cans + dac/amp and another $400 finding the right Balanced XLR cable for me. For that price, they can just get a badass GPU or CPU. On the bright side, the setup for my hardware was easy AF. I didn't have to do anything except press a button on my DAC/AMP to boost the Gain and that's it. No tweaking or tinkering necessary. I even have a button that lets me instantly switch between speakers and my headphones plugged into the DAC/Amp. Just have to remember to lower volume before switching to speakers so they don't explode. The only tweaking I had to do was in Foobar2000 downloading the right plugins and selecting the right one for listening to music which takes seconds.

I have an issue with locating enemies by sound. I have a Steelseries Arctis 7 headset, but tried many many different headsets, from very cheap to very expensive. Corsair, Razor, Gigabyte, even Redrago, still cant locate enemies, sometimes even just left from right. Gave the Redragon headset to my brother and he can hear exactly where enemies are. When I play CSGO or Warzone my brothers and friends, when spectating me, can immediately tell me where the enemy is, and they have cheap Gigabyte or Volkano or Redragon headsets. I have very small ears though so even though it is a little bit better with in-ear headphones, it becomes very uncomfortable very quickly

I recommend getting an external DAC, because I had multiple boards with terrible onboard audio where you could hear distortion, crackling etc. Igor's lab recommended a 20€ Sharkoon USB Dac, so I figured paying 20€ to never care about onboard audio again was fine. It doesn't have any fancy features or software, it just gives you a good clean audio output powerful enough to power any headphones you would realistically use for gaming. I'm happy, it just works, doesn't do any annoying shit and is cheap.

The Sharkoon DAC is pretty good, worth every penny, much better than onboard. The step from ALC 1220 to Sharkoon DAC is bigger than from the sharkoon DAC to the JDS labs. Undoubtly noticeable with first listening test. What Im saying is - the Sharkoon DAC is the real deal.

I have that same dac and DT 1990 pros and I have the same issue with footsteps, nearly £600 all together and I bought it ages ago because everybody was saying get open backs for gaming for the wider soundstage (easier to detect where footsteps and gunshots are coming from). Fucking incredible for music though.

You need to turn the bass right down. There's vedio online for best footsteps. Need a dac/ amp compo with the power to run your headset. Gaming headsets like Steelseries suck for fps games great for other stuff just not fps games. Open back is the way for footsteps.

Beyerdynamic never made an open-back headphone, they are either closed or semi-open. Even DT880 is more "open" than DT990. There are videos on yt that disassemble them. DT1990 are almost closed, behind the grills it's hard plastic. While listening to something, cover the sides with hands and you hear that sound doesnt change. And I have DT1990 too, they are BAD for gaming. Don't believe audiophiles that never play games.

Beware that Apex Legends is notorious for silent footsteps, gunfire, & other audio events. There are even many cases where there is literally zero audio in massive gunfights (e.g. Gibby or Horizon ults). So at least with Apex and silent/missing audio, the shitty game engine & audio engine / coding are most likely the main culprits (not the headphones / audio device).

I’ll be really honest I think that it’s your headset. I have the wired steel series arctic pros just like you, and compared to my razer black sharks (over 100 dollars cheaper) after using the SS for so long I found that they already come with some sort of wierd compressioning going on with loud audio like you describe, and I have no sound blaster. The directional audio also sounds like complete shit compared to the black sharks, mainly actual audio quality sounds tinny, flat, and the spatial software just doesn’t work nearly as good as the black sharks. It made me realize that, like most everyone says online and in KZbin, having basic HIFI stereo headset with external/internal sound card or amp is actually the only way to get the edge.

What this guy says...is SOOO true...look, I love my music and I got a bit into the rabbit hole. I have a JDS Labs Atom Stack, a custom made class-a AMP and custom made dac with 3 OP amps, with custom made ribbon copper ICs and custom made copper usb A-B cable. I also have an AD700x, HD559s, SR225is, K371s, K712 PROs. Now I primarly use these for music listening, but sometimes I play games too. The K712 Pros do a pretty decent job at staging in SOME games...but I knew something was off...because I remember having a "shitty" creative fatal1ty headset when I was younger, and I could soundwhore like crazy...ok, so I bought a logitech g333, and...it was like I was playing a different game. I could pinpoint all the footsteps again, everything just made sense...again...for purely gaming DO NOT GO THE AUDIOPHILE ROUTE. Right tool for the right job! Music -> audiophile route. Gaming -> get a good gaming headset or IEM and be done with it...
@kNGXXX

Did a little testing just to confirm: I can play much-much better with the G333...it's cheaper too, and has a built in mic...of course the sound is not as detailed as on the K712 PRO, but it's still good enough (at least it is certainly for gaming).

Honestly I went down the rabbit hole too, first got the sound blaster ae5 plus sound card along with a HD560s and it was amazing for music and movies etc. and the soundstage for gaming is great . But 3D imaging is all over the place and audibly confusing in more complex shooters. So I then bought into IEMs, first the Dunu Vulkans, and generally liked them overall for gaming, definately better imaging than the 560s but they are very uncomfortable and slip out your ear constantly due to the nozzle design and weight of the IEM. So I then moved on to the Raptgo Hook-X and these are way more comfortable as well as open back. Just as good as the Vulkans I’m imaging performance and more bass less peaky treble. The best audiophile grade pieces of equipment I’ve bought for gaming. However I heard about the G333s from Logitech and by no means do they sound better than any of the other 3 options (Far From It). But the handling of footstep audio and depth within the imaging is just so much better. I don’t have to think twice about where I heard someone. I’ll get nearly perfect 3d imaging for hundreds of dollars less.

I definitely went a bit down the audiophile rabbit hole. Doesn’t make you better at actually playing the game, but there’s a little bit of help with hearing where people are. Also don’t use gamery sound profiles/eq. It’s all cringey snake oil trash. Dacs you don’t need to spend much on, I would say theres just a level you get to and there’s a major level of diminishing returns the more you spend. The biggest thing will be the proper amount of amp though. Don’t use “the pros wear these” argument because they just wear the garbage rgb headsets they get from sponsors. You’re better off getting a solid pear of headphones and something like a mod mic. Thee only headset I found that wasn’t gamer trash was the sennheiser p38x

yeah, you probably are. Last month I tried a handful of headphones/headsets. At first glance "audiophile" headphones were insane in music and general media consumption, but sucked dick in games (in the footsteps department). "Gaming" - complitly opposite, but I could not understand how I was living my life without proper headphones, it was like a scene from HIMYM w/ Ted & bacon. So I dig even dipper, I've returned all my "gaming" headsets back to amazon, I was left with Sundara, DT 770 pro and 560S, plus I ordered Penrose. If you are ready to compromise on comfort and look past all technical shortcomings (battery life, connectivity issues and build quality) - Penrose is a clear choice. Great in games and in music, if you're ok with switching EQ presets in software every time (side note: presets from Audeze are actually great). Ultimately I send them back. So I left with studio reference "audiophile" headphones. The answer - proper EQ presets, you can do it in APO/Peace or with a proper amp/dac, w/ correct eq presets.

The headphones you have are rated well for gaming at the entry level for audiophile cans, but your dac is completely trash. IMO you shouldn’t buy audiophile headphones for pc gaming, you would buy them to listen to music and then they become your gaming headphones. My setup is the schitt modi/magni amp and separate dac both retail for 99$. Then I have the senheiser drop colab 6xx’s @199. So for 400$usd you have a perfect beginner audiophile setup, and then it goes up from there lol. Been using this combo for 2 years plus and it’s perfect for me, but once you start it’s hard to stop yourself. I’ve wanted to upgrade for a while now as I love music on my pc but the cost is too high and I got a new rtx card instead. I will never go back to a gaming headset ever, only thing I miss is wireless lol
