Doesn't matter how long it takes you. What matters is that it comes out square, consistent tension, real corners on all four corners, and hopefully all of them are the same size! I think somewhere in storage is a little booklet of "shrink vests" that are made with two granny squares, each large enough to cover your chest (not completely). Then plain crochet sections for the sides, shoulder straps, bottom band.

Granny squares are awesome! I continue to go back to them after 50 plus years of crocheting! Relax and enjoy! There’s no hurry, it’s not a race. It’s not unusual to feel iffy until you finish. I’m amazed, even now, what I create! It’s a great feeling.

I can crochet a granny in 5 mins, but I’ve been crocheting for about 50 years. In fact, my first project was a black and multiple color granny blanket for my Mom. That blanket lasted almost 50 years! I rarely crochet fast anymore. I usually just crochet for myself so there’s rarely any hurry. Granny squares haven’t gone out style. I love to learn new variations that come along.

I wonder if changing the way you hold the hook to a pencil grip would speed up your crochet. Then hold the yarn over your left forefinger. Your movements would be much smaller then, resulting in more speed. Beautiful result, Jenna!

Mrs. Phipps, what happens is when you have been crocheting for 40 plus years, like i have, your hands just take off on their own.I'm 73, I've been crocheting since I was in 4th grade. My guess is about 11-12? If I'm following a pattern (like the sleeves of a cardigan) I'm slower because I'm a stickler for being exact, but it's like the programming is in your hands. I had a very elaborate bedspread square in fine thread. I had made an entire bedspread with it and then lost the pattern. One day, I just picked up thread and hook and started the square... my hands knew the pattern, exactly. I even remembered how to join them correctly. I felt like I wasn't even thinking of the pattern. That is where the speed comes from. If I am making a pattern stitch ( I mean something like popcorns or fans) I love, and have done before, my speed picks up. I am amazed to see how popular the granny square is becoming. My mom used to make bedspreads of them.. I used to wear vests of them at one of my first jobs, a saleswoman at a fancy department store in 1972-74! I've never had the nerve just to play with patterns like you do, I'm a pattern collector and have always been so. I have books and magazines from the very early 70s! Oh, say hi to Benson. He's a cutie. PS. The only thing that slows me down is when the arthritis gets bad.
