I am Dr. Capo, the person responsible for the cut. Before we kicked off, Joshua and I had a thorough discussion where I explained all the risks involved. Despite the challenges, he was determined to proceed with the competition, and we aimed to make the process as smooth as possible. Keep in mind, certain constraints limited our preparations, like the lack of time for heat acclimation and unexpected issues such as a broken-down car. Cutting weight is always a professional risk, and it's not advisable. However, as long as the rules remain unchanged, it's an inherent part of the sport. Just like heavy tackles in American football, it happens, and we must ensure those undertaking such challenges receive the right support. I provided Josh with the necessary assistance. Looking ahead, we're hopeful to refine the weight cut for the West Coast Trials. This will showcase the difference between a last-second cut and one meticulously planned over several months, as it should be.

@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
This was a routine weight cut for me every week in college wrestling. And we only got a 1hr weigh in. It was the hardest part of wrestling at a high level for sure. They don’t cut as much as we did back then (late 90s - early 2000s). We cut this much at extremely low bodyfat percentages too. Generally speaking, I felt terrible for like 6 months out of the year. Just so you know, you don’t absorb water through your skin. You aren’t an amphibian, lol! If so, you would swell up in the bath. The purpose of scraping the sweat off is to prevent your body from cooling itself down with sweat. Having a sheen of sweat all over is your body’s way of cooling itself off. So by scraping it off, you sweat more to cool off. It works. We used to do it in the sauna. Yes, that was against NCAA rules. I think that I can talk about it freely now 22 years later. We cheated all the weight cutting rules. We used rubber suits, saunas, cheated hydration tests so we could certify at lower rates, etc etc. As bad as cutting sucks, I do think it prepares you mentally. You have more skin in the game. A hard weight cut speaks for your desire and sacrifice to win. In the future, start cutting out the carbs like 5-6 days before final weight cut. This will drop the glycogen in the muscle and then you’ll burn more fat for fuel with steady state cardio. I would aim to cut less than 8lbs of water. I would routinely cut 10-14lbs in 3 days to make 125 or 133 in college. Last 8lbs was water. Any more than that was horrible. Most I ever lost at one time was 11lbs of water to make 125lbs. I barely remember anything about weighing in😊
@JoshRichBJJ Жыл бұрын
Doing all of that with only an hour to rehydrate is brutal. I definitely felt what you said about having skin in the game. I felt more ready mentally for this competition than for most, the weight cut forced me to be locked in leading up to it. And thanks for all the advice. Good to know the sweat scrapping isn’t just bro science haha
@josephbreza-grappling9459 Жыл бұрын
@@JoshRichBJJ dude, in my experience the water bath is brutal and harder, because you lose electrolytes so fast. Here’s what we used to do…put on sweats. Put a rubber suit on over the sweats. Put sweat on over top of the rubber suit. Put on a beanie and pull the hood over your head and tighten the strings. We used to drill a little wrestling, jog, drill, jog, repeat. Flow grappling like passing someone’s guard is good too. All you want is to get your HR up and then let the sweat REALLY start coming. Once it does and your underneath sweats are soaked, you’re really getting it going. Ball up in a turtle like position and just rock back and forth. Sometimes I would so a wrestling stand up here and there to get the heat going still. But mostly once that sweat is really going, you don’t need to work hard. In fact, none of that should be hard cardio, you just want to trap that heat. Don’t make the mistake that so many people do. They take everything off to check their weight. You don’t want that. Because once that shit comes off, you will cool down so fast and unless you’ve got more dry sweats, you’re not going to be able to get much out of putting wet sweats on. Then you’ll have to put the rubber suit on your skin directly. I could tell at the end of that cut that you were “in the shit.” You had that look. Trust me, the last thing you want to do is to put a wet rubber suit on your bare skin when you feel like that. So better to grit it out and cut more than you have to and drink it back then to be under and have to go through agony. I hate baths and saunas. I literally have PTSD from the saunas-the smell of that wood sets me off bro. Lol

But it was all the salt and water, but you looked absolutely jacked, because your bodyfat was so low. By the next day I was like 144, and then 140, and so on. But I was drinking water, just not eating tons of salt and food. Just going back to my normal diet. It is so stupid that dehydrating is allowed. It is dangerous and you are required to do it to be competitive, but it is so easy to stop. The rational for banning steroids in most pro sports and Olympics is that it that they think athletes shouldn't be forced to take them to be competitive. They try really hard to test for them, but it is an impossible task and all of them are on anyway. For some reason they still allow dehydrating and rehydrating over the limit even though that is a billion times easier to prevent than PEDs.

That should only take a day, and your foods should only be very nutritional but light and low in calories protein shakes protein requirement, vitamin and mineral requirement. Water and liquid the week before a gallon of water a day. Then it should only take a day of cutting weight in a sauna is the most optimal then your not holding the weight for long time and you will not be stressed out. If your fully hydrated the week before then the actual cut should only take four hours. You still want to keep your fitness workouts that week and strength up. It becomes easier as you know your requirements and body before. You should be running and lifting weight so then your body is functioning properly and optimally. If you stress and cut weight improperly it can affect your performance. Also a week before you should have a day when you make the weight before. Hotels, gyms and private owners have saunas. Sometimes people also eat when they get stressed out. You want your muscles relaxed so the sauna facilitates your muscles, so you can sweat without exhausted muscles. Especially if you're not on a fitness program before. The foods you eat the week before should be water soluble fruits veggies cut carbs and sodium. After the mock weight eat a normal meal and hydrate to regain strength and weight, then next day for weight in week cut out heavy foods and being the hydration for the reason of the flush in a single day. You can cut 10-15 pounds in a day if you do it properly. They restore you suger levels protein afterwards, just be aware of bloating after, if the food is not suitable. If you follow this method you will be stronger longer and less stressed as well as returned mental aquity reaction time and be fully hydrated when your match time happens. The method you showed was not the best method. You should also do a body composition test, and hydration test to see the optimal weight level, instead of exhausting muscles and mind before even competition. The competition is more important, but sometimes people are so exhausted from the improper cut that they cannot perform. And loose motivation because of the bad weight cut. It takes two weeks to prepare correctly for the weigh in.
