After making yesterday's video in which I ask if G-Shocks should be counted toward your watch collection, I received a torrent of comments that taught me that G-Shock is more than a noun; it's a verb, it's a lifestyle, it's an attitude, & it's a mood.
My book The Watch Survivor: A Guide Through the Traps, Pitfalls, and Strange Habits of Watch Enthusiasts is on Amazon Kindle:

First time commenter, long time watcher. I recommend Watchgeek's KZbin channel. By watching his module videos, I've mastered my used GW5000U's Module 3495. What I also love about the Shocks is also the replaceability of the parts. I can order a new bezel from pacparts and replace it myself for 10 dollars. IMHO, having both a G Shock Square and monocoque Tuna is a testament to design and engineering.

Considering your tastes for nicer things like the SLA Willard and the MarineMaster, I really think a GW5000U would be right down your alley. It's a classic G-Shock Square, except it has a diamondlike-coated steel case with a screwdown case back (like a traditional watch) beneath the resin exterior; which itself is a softer and more pliable band than the usual G-shock. It has a weighty feel that someone coming from mechanical watches would appreciate. It's a bit more expensive than the usual G at around $250-300, but it's worth every penny. The step up in quality is noticeable once you experience it.

I will check it out. I suspect you mean the one with the resin bond, not steel. Thanks.
@AdarisTempest
@AdarisTempest 5 ай бұрын
@JeffreyMcMahon It has a resin band, but the inner case of the watch itself is solid steel, with a screwdown caseback. Shrouded over that case is a resin bezel. From the outside it looks like any other G-Shock square, but it has a lot more weight and substance to it. It just FEELS quality.

As someone's whose addiction started with G-Shock; owning one won't cure any addiction. That said, I don't wear my G-Shocks as often anymore because they're a little too complicated for how my tastes have changed. Basic navigation isn't too bad, but once you get into niche functions, I find I have to watch a KZbin video to refresh my memory. IMHO, if you want to try to be "one-and-done", a square is hard to beat, though people have made compelling arguments for the "CasiOak". I just don't have personal experience with the latter. Addendum: Do G-Shocks count towards the collection? 🤔 There was a time when my collection was all G-Shock and I would have said, "yes". If you asked me in a conversation, I would still say, "yes"; but none of mine are part of my Chrono24 collection, however, neither is my Hamilton, Citizen, or Seiko. 🤷‍♂️

"Yutes" rule today. Yes, there are some analog G Shocks, and yes, I was flabbergasted in the '70s when my $25 Casio not only knew what month it was but also knew leap years. But, I was schooled by the hands of the bold dial above the blackboard for 16 years. A friend's middle-schooler says she doesn't need to learn to tell time by the hands of a clock because it's all digital everywhere. Younger clerks are unable to countback change and some, it's reported may not know the value of coins or currency. No lawn near here, but G Shock as a tool? Maybe yes. My analog brain might master the module, but can that module build a fire?

I think the Frogman should be a part of your collection. I fully support that! I'm downsizing at least one of my G-Shocks, but that's to (probably) add a Seiko Arnie to the collection down the line. It's like a G-Shock, but a lot more money, and less features ;).

In the beginning of my wristwatch interest when I started to collect watches, I did not even think about G-shock. Yes, I knew about G-shock but my eyes were at first only aimed on dress watches. But then I bought a G-shock. I kinda liked it. Shortly after that, I got another. Something happened and while I continued to get dress watches like Citizen and Seikos, my collection of G-shock grew more than any other kind of watch. That was 3 years ago and today half my watch collection consists of G-shocks. G-shock is more than a series of watches. It's a concept. It's like it is an own brand and not just one model in a series of a brand. Actually some dealers have put G-shock under list of brands. As I can see there is only one serious drawback with G-shock: the functions are hardly useful in darkness. If you turn on the back light in order to use a function the light instantly shuts off when you push any button. This is very impractical. Casio should change this.

As a mega G-Shock aficionado, I'm truly enjoying these videos. I also prefer the simple all resin ones - not into the new fancy all metal ones coming out as of late. My favorites are the old squares like DW-5000, DW-5600C, DW-5200C, these had all metal cases with screwbacks. The equivalent of that now is the GW-5000, I always recommend that one as the ultimate square. I would love a frogman but they are all too big for me (minus the older DW-9900). I cannot wait to see yours.

Seems 2024 is a repeat cycle for me 🤦‍♂️

I just got me first one -- a Gulf master. So, I'm def not a gshock pro, but for me if the tech is evergreen, then it's a timepiece. So, the Bluetooth stuff, I don't like as a timepiece because it can go out of date sooner than you think. But a solar watch and analog dial with a compass? This def counts as much as my Citizen Orca and my Seiko quartz chrono.

I think you would love the GWF-1000 McMahon. It’s a beast-looks awesome, and it’s a high quality Gshock-a bargain at $400. I own one, along with 2 other 200 series Frogman and many 5000 series squares. The GWF-1000 is bit large for my puny 7 inch wrist, but I just love it. I used it to dive the Great Blue Hole in Belize and it served me well. What I love about G-shock is that they are “anti-anxiety” for me. I can wear them without fear or worry of damage, without the hassle of changing a battery, or worrying about daily accuracy. They just perform flawlessly day in and day out. Get that GWF-1000, you won’t be disappointed. It just has that rock solid feel….like it could survive anything.

The G-Shock module is, by design, simple. There is a commonality between models so you don’t get lost when changing from say a Square to a Frogman. The difference is some have more features, like the Frogman with its dive mode which on every frogman, is literally a dive timer, apart from the “D Series” Frogman, which has a depth sensor and can record depth in the dive mode. Again, all are simple enough to work out and you have a community right here who can assist you in becoming the SME of all things G-Shock/Frogman. I have a few vids where I go into all of the modes of each model of Frogman that I own, please feel free to take a look if you like. Oh and tomorrow is Frog Friday🐸🐸🐸

Who doesn’t know the history of G Shock? Well, it seems some… It was Ibe’s father’s watch that he dropped. He was devastated, yet the idea came to him later on- when he watched kids play football (soccer for you Americans😉), and the ball made him think and connect it to that moment of heartbreak. What if the watch had a protection around it 🤔? Then-What happened to my father’s watch, would not have happened. And there were 3 years of testing, and walla! A g shock was born🤗
