Sure, the “You, Dad. I’d still have you” line is wonderful. But it’s the “Dad?” line that broke me. He is so beaten up, his eyes swollen, he can’t see. And the delivery isn’t even that of a “son to a father,” but more of a small child to parent. Amazing. They killed it.

Even better when Nolan Is about to answer with a "Yes, Mark/son?" The paternal instincts kicked In, making Nolan realize he's no longer just a Viltrumite on a random planet. That's top notch writing and acting.

I wholeheartedly agree. Mark thoroughly beat a Viltrumite with 2 sentences. He took a beating that would have killed almost anyone else and still came up on top. He might not be the steongest in the outside, but within he's unbreakable, unbeatable.

The absolute best thing about this conclusion is that it doesn't end like most superhero media. The hero isn't just suddenly able to beat the villain, not through a Macguffin, no help from others, or just plain "because they're supposed to." Mark had no chance in this fight. NObody had a chance in this fight. After seeing Nolan take a freaking GEARS OF WAR HAMMER OF DAWN, I knew Mark was destined to be ground beef. But Mark is literally the ONLY person whose words could have ever won that fight, and it was set up and developed so perfectly. And the best part? *It still almost didn't work* This show is just flawless just 😗👌 *mwah* 11/10, idfc, everyone's whining about the romance plot, again, idfc, higher purpose baby, character, uh-de-/velopmeeennt/ Season 2 pls *god I just hope they don't go the AMC route* *pls don't*

I don't see that as regret. That seems more like a look of confusion. As a Viltrumite he's had to kill his own kind before and thought nothing of it. Everything he's done was in service to the greater good of the Empire. But now looking at his hands covered in his son's blood for the first time he has the thought "Why doesn't this feel right?" Regret does come a second later after Mark says "Dad?" when you see him trying to force himself not to cry. The weight of his actions, and the real conflict Nolan has (good father vs loyal soldier) finally boiling to the surface.

The questions he asks Mark are questions he himself doesn't have answers to because he was trained that Viltrum is the only way, duty above all. It's not until his son (another Viltrumite) gives him an answer, that he is able to second guess himself. Because after everything Omni-Man has put Mark through, Mark still sees him as a father. @diasturien 3 жыл бұрын
I gotta say, I've watched too many "bad guy suddenly has a change of heart" scenes and I really thought I would never get emotionally affected by any such scene. But the voice acting and animation here is just... damn. Nolan's little gasp right after Mark says "Dad?" His expressions running through denial, anger, sadness, regret, and finally a painful but realistic mixture of acceptance, self-hatred, anger and shame. In that moment, a part of him tells him that he screwed up, but he can't accept that, because doing so would shatter his entire identity. Throughout this fight he makes a point of brutally demonstrating how "apart", "above" from Humanity he is, but in this one moment we see a crack in his facade. This doesn't feel right. Beating his son nearly to death, someone who still professes their love for him even as he kills them. With just a few words Mark has planted a seed of doubt in Nolan's mind, suggesting that perhaps the Viltrumites are wrong after all. Might does not make right. How can it, when Mark is so clearly right at this moment, despite being so thoroughly outmatched.

@bluerious5475
@bluerious5475 3 жыл бұрын
@Jack Alan Honestly, I wouldn’t, but her characterization falls apart when she admits to knowing the truth about Mark. She deliberately puts her own desires over other people’s lives and safety, and despite knowing Mark had to have almost died at one point, still gets upset when she gets stood up by Mark and even when he saves their lives right in front of her. She has no good reason to be as mad with Mark as she is if she really knew he was Invincible for as long as she said she did, but she does anyway and in hindsight it ends up being very selfish and outright disrespectful. She would be so much better if either A.) She expressed her disappointment with Mark better, not berating him and instead being more understanding but still upset about a lack of communication B.) She was genuinely just unaware of Mark’s identity. It’s still possible for her to be mad with mark after learning about his identity, but the writers for whatever reason wanted her to “subvert expectations” and ended up ruining the credibility she had going for her I really don’t want to hate Amber’s character, but I just can’t ignore what her knowing about Invincible does to her overall character.

That's only in our framework of morality. There is absolutely no guarantee that aliens could feel what we feel and believe in what we believe. For example, we are compassionate by nature, whereas mantis are cannibals and eat their own babies, and there is nothing wrong with that in their perspective. Something like that, but with more variation and crazier extremes, should also be true about aliens.

But the thing that sets him off and gives him even a shred of morality is seeing his son hurt, beat down and nearly dead, and knowing that he’s the one that caused that to happen. @@asddsa8203 Well, in current political climate it's risky... but also it's just hard to write. If you are writing from the point of view of the human then it's "sit back & watch" how aliens work... Where is the conflict?.. And the hero should be (pro)active. If it's from the POV of the "progressor" then it's much easier to make it that someone from Earth is encountering primitive humanlike aliens. Still, watching how schools and powerplants are being built for year and years is boring... So, only a few books like about stuff like that. - Also, benevolent aliens are a bad idea for the book because it teaches to rely on someone else and not taking responsibility for yourself.

My favorite aspect of Omni man's retreat isn't that he feels bad, it's that Mark and humanity in general managed to warp Nolan's view of life itself. Omni Man previously admitted to being happy "for a time" while on Earth. He comes from a Race that see's itself fit to claim the Galaxy and is most likely one of its strongest members. You don't become a dedicated elite soldier to represent the entire planet without a sense of pride for your accomplishments. I haven't read the comics (and I don't want to until the series is finished) but assume leaving your post in the eyes of a Viltrum is treason. Nolan's belief in his entire planet was shaken by someone of who. he originally planned to just be a power investment... What he didn't realize was it became an emotional investment, and if he truly didn't care about humanity he wouldn't have killed so many people to try and prove otherwise. Nolan is so loyal to and afraid of his own brutal, savage, Sayajin-like race that his attempts to quell his fear is denying the love he's developed for earth by preaching Viltrumite propaganda and mowing down people he claims to consider subhuman. The truth of the matter is that it's a good thing Mark turned out to be a Viltrumite. Because it takes that fearful and enraged beating he delivered to Mark in order for him to realize that the power of a Viltrumite, the thing that used to define Nolan his whole life, meant absolutely nothing to Mark (in what could possibly be his final moments.) Omniman has hardly ever needed to worry about death, and coming from a planet that decided on a whim to commit genocide on itself just to stress test the hell out of evolution, his society likely values fight or flight if they are ever against the ropes. The fact that Mark, in Nolan's eyes, is a Viltrumite fighting with the same Zeal that Nolan has for his empire is the final confirmation needed for Nolan to realize the lie he's been living. His shame in killing creatures he lived amongst and protected for decades was strong enough to cause him to leave, a planet he could easily conquer became guilt so deeply rooted his blood soaked hands, for the first time, felt like blood that shouldn't have been there.

The sad thing is this is the same day that Mark was excited because he got to team up with his dad and fight the giant , poor Mark

Yeah just love the stance that they give Omni-man . Like the way they make him bigger than Mark. his positioning really adds to the dialog.

Since the beginning of the fight, I think Nolan was trying to convince himself more than Mark, and destroying everything he carred about was the only solution he thought to detach himself. He's been a Viltrumite for centuries, but a human for only a couple of years.
