At the start of the year I started playing a game (in my head), I'm calling it "let's pretend we're moving"....I'm slowly going through everything, shelf by shelf, drawer by drawer....looking at everything, if I wouldn't take it if we had to move tomorrow, it goes.

It's amazing how de-cluttering areas in our homes can make us feel mentally lighter and accomplished, often in less than 10 min. Tip for when you're cleaning a junk drawer -- use ziplock bags to group things together, like those chunks of broken bed pieces, etc. Better to open a drawer and see bags of stuff then things rolling all around and back into a pile again -- also label the bags so that someone else will know what they're for besides you. Put your passports in a ziplock as well -- what if you suddenly had a roof leak? That way important docs stay dry, and together.
@MMPutnam77
@MMPutnam77 4 жыл бұрын
I second the suggestion of bagging things. And what if you kept the cruise docs right under the passports? That way the whole shelf in your closet would be open. Great job on the declutter! You've obviously been keeping up with it for a while now because you barely had anything.

Concerning the passports, I would personally put them in a safe or a fireproof lock box like we have. Ours fits under our bed and has a handle. Just my opinion

I started decluttering last spring. At first, 1 leaf bag at a time. Finally down to a reusable grocery bag every week to 10 days. I need more alternatives to shopping....I get out and walk, weather willing.little volunteer work goes a long way for me.

1) dryers are terrible for jeans with any stretch fibers/materials. 2) my fave stretch tip: get water bottle with a fine mist- put jeans on (or spray the tight areas with water first then put on)- spray a fine mist over the tight areas, THEN do the Jean stretch. Or, just go about your day. You want them lightly damp, not wet. Your body warmth will help them dry within 10 min (5 min usually). They’ll fit like a glove.

My hunney likes to hoard more than me, but I try and declutter quietly about every six months. Feels so much better with less mess.We got rid of our carpet after we moved in. It was that old 70's shaggy and just let the roomba run around on wood laminate. Saves time so I can go onto the next area to clean.

Tasha Hargrove been there done that. We had four trailers one for garbage one for donate one for keep went to recycle it took my brother my sister and I and two other helpers 5 days to clean out my moms house that she hadn’t lived in it for seven years but they still kind of had their overflow stuff there in the attic of the garage and garage the attic of the house the main floor in the basement we’re all hoarded it was unreal. Then my mom and my stepfather both died within three months of each other and then we had to clean out their apartment which was very large. I don’t want that for my kids. I’m sorting out my life.

I hang out my jeans instead of the dryer. I am on a mission to declutter my entire house this year. We still have some repairs to make from our flood in 2017, not to mention that our little corner is being invaded by developers who are subdividing into smaller acreage properties and we will be surrounded by people soon, so we will be selling our place next year probably. I don’t want to move garbage.

Have you ever thought about having two fire safes. One for passport and other important documents and pictures. The second fire safe as a family time capsule. A Good de-clutter project is putting all photos and important documents on a CD as a back up reference. Before discarding any old electronic or phone device make sure all stored information is transfered to a modern program format. Hope this information is helpful.

A funny story about "dryer" jeans. When I was a kid (a looong time ago) we did not have a clothes dryer. We had to hang our clothes outside year-round. On the rare occasion when my mother forgot to bring in the laundry the day before, we would have to go out and get our jeans off the line in the morning before school. In the winter this was problematic because the jeans would be stiff as a board! We would literally stand up our jeans in front of the heat duct and pray they thawed out enough to put on before the bus came. The kitchen duct was the best because you had the benefit of the additional heat from the stove/oven...with 6 kids we always fought over that duct! P.S. My last name is not Walton =o)

Try a steamer on the nail polish! The previous owners had dripped varnish onto the tile floor while staining the bathroom cabinets and after years of just living with it, we hit it with a steamer and it came right up. I bet it would work equally well on nail polish.

I am finally moving from my modest home to build a home that is handicap adapted. When I divorced my children’s father, we had a lovely home, but it had a $3000 a month payment! I did get that amount in child support, but what if he didn’t pay it? There were many times he didn’t. I went back and asked for my portion of the equity and purchased this very modest home. It’s payment is $327/month. Now I could use the child support on my children. I was able to send my children to college. So now it’s my time to live in a home that fits me. But 29 years of stuff! I AM GOING TO FIND THAT LINK AND GET DONE BEFORE I MOVE! Thank you!

Yes! I was cringing when she said she was canceling so many. It's going to hurt her credit so much. Just spend enough on them to keep them active (like a month subscription you can then turn around and pay off right away). But this will KILL her credit utilization, because suddenly she'll loose all that available credit!

Luv that this is smaller tasks! Been doing a room at a time... little over whelming i do 15 minutes a day but even that can seem like your never going to end. Like this idea one task a day! Thanks for sharing!

I am the worst with paper clutter too! It's so bad... I've never been taught what to keep and/or why I'm keeping it. Receipts etc. I need HELP in the worst way with that and finances!

Yep. I decluttered all through January and nothing looks different! Boxes went to charity and garbage was full on repeat but it will be ongoing until I ruthlessly examine every.little.thing!

Try a touch of goo gone from dallor tree on that red nail polish. That should get it off if not then try nail polish remover with acetone.

Honestly, I probably have about a month of decluttering (9-5) I should do to make our home livable. My own Mom was excellent at keeping our family home tidy and clutter-free; I however am not.

I would definitely be scared to clean under our bed...our little old dog loves to hide under there...and she is kind of like a cat and likes to take things from around the house and hide them under the bed. Our dinning room table leaf lives under there because where else can you keep such a large awkward thing?....lol
