It's always so interesting to hear people say they don't need to declutter, sometimes when they've never decluttered before. I think people get used to seeing their homes in a certain way, and don't think about the details of what's in their home. It just doesn't seem like clutter to them. But once they start looking with new eyes, they start to realize there really is clutter, they had no idea they had so much stuff they didn't need, or even want!

I did this twice in the last year because my previous employer moved offices and my parents are moving. My boss isn't attached to his stuff fortunately, he just never bothered to clean so I had to volunteer to help look through stuff or it wouldn't have gotten done. His office looked like an episode of Hoarders but at least I was getting paid. And my dad is a neatnick and both parents were proactive about getting rid of stuff so helping them was relatively a breeze.

I like how you influenced your Mom to declutter even through she wasn't into it at the start. You did a great job! I've done this a few times in my life before moving because it HELPS a LOT.

This video is changing lives! I watched it with my new roommate, who was a bit stressed and intimidated by my urge to reorganise the house, (I just moved in and it was super cluttered), but afterwards we decluttered the whole living room and she even tentatively asked me if I could help her with her room as well! And I watched it with my mom who is now so excited to start the process together :)

The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning by Margareta Magnusson is the way to go. As someone who had to clean out my parent's house (dad passed, mom downsized), I can tell you it is super stressful to have to get rid of so much stuff in one go, especially when you're grieving. I have death cleaned for my kids and I continue to go through stuff every so often because I don't want them to have to get rid of all the crap I couldn't be bothered to get rid of. It's not fair to pass the burden down. My father died at 59. You never know when your time will come, it's best to lighten the load for those you may leave behind.

Love this so much! Some of those moments are just waaaay too familiar. 😂 My mum and I always watch your videos together (It’s basically appointment tv at this point). We were constantly cracking up. I swear we’ve had some of those same conversations (fuses for… something. Yup.) One tip for keeping those gorgeously clear drawers and surfaces tidy: block spaces by either putting something there to store or decorate with (like placing a bowl, vase or candle on top of a cabinet), or by designating and physically marking those spaces to be filled at a later date (think dividers and labels, even just temporary ones). That way it feels “wrong“ to put stuff there that disrupts the decoration or doesn’t match the designation, keeping the spaces tidy for longer. It works wonders in our house. Such a brilliant video as always, and fabulous editing! Those Skillshare classes are really paying off 😁 I’d love for this to become a series!
