yeah. social media is not a cure for loneliness, it's a patch. The cure is to either accept loneliness and be OK with it, or to find actual real life people outside of social media "friends"

Definitely deleted social media a couple times, but always came back to it honestly because I felt isolated and out of touch with people. I thought I was feeling out of touch with "reality" but it was the fantasy world that social media creates that I was feeling distant and out of touch with. I think I deleted social media for six months but felt like I had to go back to relate to other people again, but I clearly see now those people and I are not meant to understand or relate to each other.

Gen Z are so smart, you guys are actually the first generation that I saw aware of this and in my opinion, the generation that hurt the most by the internet. It doesn't matter if you stumbles from time to time (may God bless you) but to talk about this and share it with people about things that the past generation never think of, so inspiring. We love you and we wish you good luck running the future! - sincerely, Gen Y.

nah genz isnt the most hurt by internet, as of now alpha will be the most and as time progresses the generations to come. I started using cell phones of my parents when i was abt 7 years old in 2016 eventho by now cell phones were invented for over a decade but I did not live in a first world country so I still spent atleast the first 7 years of my life without interent, gen alpha did not, and then genz's future kids, gen beta, the generation after alpha will suffer more bc all they got a internet, boomers juts got the outside world, millenials mostly had the outside world and a little internet world, genz got more internet world than it did outside world but still got some outside world, the generations to come will only have the internet world, genz was the last generation to experience both eventho that experience had more internet and less outside but still, gen alpha and beta will only have the internet, they won't everknow what the world felt like w/o internet, im pretty sure my aged people (15) in first world countries also do not know how the world was before internet so only the older genz experienced both while the younger 2008-2012, not so much. but atleast I did and im glad.

Dont agree at all, gen z are the most addicted to social media, im a gen z (born in 98) but most of my relatives and coworkers are millenials and they were aware of the damage of social media and making your life all about that, there are A LOT of vlogs about people leaving internet and most of them are late millenials, as well early gen z are the ones who are a little more aware, but we are talking about the generation that IS ALL THE TIME ONLINE and the ones who made tiktok famous. But im really glad there are more late gen z who are watching how this and the next generation are living a fake life because of the internet.

But no i can’t give it up I Love gaming and online is where I met my real friend. And having many friendship breakups and fallouts problems with my nearly all actually if not it’s all my school ‘friends’ so no I don’t trust that statement, ‘only real friends are in person’ not when your in person friends that you met in person first end up treating you as an option and like you don’t matter, despite you devoting time and effort to them. deleting definitely makes you face yourself and your insecurities head on because you can't drown them in the noise. it's sort of like waking up from a bad dream. i've had instagram deleted for three months, and had it completely deactivated for like six weeks - watching videos like these had made me realize it takes way longer than that to break the cycle of addiction and i still have a lot to learn - my brain is still hardwired to want to post and brag on instagram and i keep realizing that's not an option anymore. i'm looking forward to what my life can look like if i keep going.

It’s normal now in a sense but so sad, people really don’t talk to each other genuinely anymore, my grandparents would always say this & I didn’t truly get it. I haven’t had friends now for a while so cutting out social media too pushes me to actually go out into the world! 😭👏🏼

you don't realize how toxic social media is and how dysfunctional your way of thinking becomes until you've eliminated them. The problem with this is bigger than ourselves. The problem is that there are literally billions of people in the world just like this. I seriously think that social media is going to bring about an involution in human culture and many other aspects.

You have a very mature and wise perspective on this subject! I was on FB for about 10 years, and deleted it about 4 years ago. After going through "withdrawal", for about a month, my life blossomed! I am SO much happier now, and I didn't realise how deep I was sucked into that strange world until I got out. To anyone reading this, after you delete your SM accounts, don't return to it! Go out for walks, call friends, read books, etc. You WILL get over the withdrawal anxiety, and your life will be richer. 💖

i'm so happy that deleting social media is getting spoken about recently, because let's be honest it's easier said than done but once you're fully done with it, it feels amazing. I had fully deleted social media in the middle of 2019, it was pretty hard in the beginning only because social media had become one of my daily routines but i realised how much time i'm wasting of my own life just scrolling and comparing and reading other people's opinions, which is not healthy for any human being at all. Just imagine how peaceful and happier everyone would be without social media not knowing other's negative thoughts and comparisons.
@for833
@for833 7 ай бұрын
I agree with you 100%! I've lately found myself comparing not only my success (or what seems a lack of), but as a professional reading what others in my field post which often contradicts my own beliefs and wondering whether I am correct and really questioning sometimes my own knowledge. But when I take a step back and analyze it, I realize that people also put out a lot of misinformation out there and they do it so convincingly that you think they are right. So I've stopped going on my business account and I feel so much better about how successful I am without comparing my success to others.

The most difficult thing about quitting social media is that you have to face how lonely you are in real life. I personally have no friends and my relationship with my family is not that great so whenever I try to cut back on my use of social media I find myself feeling extremely lonely as I have nothing to replace it with. They are those who say you should just get out and do things on your own but trust I tried and I tried and I always failed miserably. It becomes difficult to connect with people and form relationships with them once you finish school. Especially, if you are socially inexperienced like I am and old as I am. It is just human nature, we can't help but feel a bit suspicious when we encounter an adult person with no social proof. It is hard and honestly all I am hoping for in this stage of my life is too feel less pain because sometimes the loneliness can be so crushing.

I can relate to this quite a bit, especially the no friends & not so great relationship with family. I've been off social media for months and used to have massive fear of missing out, but tbh now I don't even miss instagram or other platforms. At first it can feel like you're getting disconnected from the lives of people you know, cos you're not seeing them post their morning coffee or club outings or most recent trip/vacation, but in reality those weren't the people that I would talk to. I was just witnessing the moments they wanted me to witness from afar, so no loss really. While I do feel pretty lonely and get bored easily, I also feel more fulfilled with my day to day life - I can focus on reading more books, trying different hobbies until I find one to stick to, taking care of my plants, working out more etc. And I have to say I don't miss no longer being in the loop with what's trendy and funny and all the meme culture online. Life gets better, but you have to make an effort

I've been thinking about deleting social media for so long. I've been on social media breaks, but they never lasted. I'm not even active on insta, I never post but there's always this big cloud of pressure over me whenever I'm engaging in an activity or doing something fun to take that perfect picture and post it. My excuse lately has been that I follow so many amazing content creators that genuinely help me and share wonderful information. However, I tell myself that it would be so much personal and more inspiring to learn from the people who are actually in my life and to listen to their stories. Thank you for sharing your journey and inspiring us to take this leap

I was getting to know a group of girls and we were still in that stage of not being friends yet but hanging out. And we exchanged social media accounts, literally the next day after they added my instagram they became so different. They were all very friendly and wanting to become closer, it was an obvious difference from before. It was almost as after they saw my profile and my pictures they realized I was “enough” to be part of their group. I know it’s normal for these things to happen in high school and most people are like that. But I decided I didn’t want to be part of that, even though sometimes I made those judgments myself. That was when I decided to deactivate my Instagram. I honestly don’t see the greatest difference in my day to day life, but I feel so much better when I meet someone and I don’t care if their pictures look “weird” and if they have friends or not. I always hated this thing where you are what your instagram profile portraits

I'm soo happy to see the change deleting social media leads to. I deleted instagram on 25th June and it is september now. I honestly have never felt better and I relate to you on soo many different levels. Especially how deleting social media makes you stop judging people just by their profiles. I was one of them, completely absorbed in making my feed "aesthetic" and belittling those whose weren't. Now when I talk to people, I see them for who they really are, not as someone on my screen. I have also lost many friends, a few close ones and mostly those who were always overly nice to me on my comments and stories. Sometimes when I really want to share pictures, I do it on watsapp, where only those who really mean something are present. I am in a place in life where I am so happy to be myself, wear whatever I want, surrounded by people who genuinely care for me. I also did reactivate it a few weeks back for like 2 days, and the amount of content and trend really overwhelmed me, compelling me to delete it at the earliest. Only after I deleted it, I felt at peace. I didn't feel like I needed to broadcast my entire life to others. I realised that, it's all a trap and we don't even know that we're stuck in it.

I'm also actually really scared just thinking about the enormous amounts of time in our life that go lost while we just sit there and watch social media, living in this world that isn't real. It's really robbing us of our lives.. that's so sad. I've decided to change that, I set myself a goal to just quit it and see how things will change, how my mind will shift. Never liked them but i felt pressure to use them to be included, but social media triggered me daily and made me feel constantly anxious. I'm more stable and happy now! I'd definitely say that if any of you are going through the first weeks, remember that social media is literally like a drug that many of us used to escape from reality. It's detox. It's not pretty and we have to face those things we don't like. But it's worth it and once it's done, everything gets better 💖

Now I’ll have to actually be a bit more inquisitive with people if I want to know them. I can’t just look at their page to see what they like, I just have to be forward about it and ASK. This is fascinating for me to listen to. I'm 23, and I've never had proper social media. I didn't even have a phone until I was probably 16 or 17. In High School, I was extremely introspective, and I constantly felt isolated, like I was the only one around me paying attention to or experiencing the real world. I thought it was mostly because people were just caught up in typical drama and "High School Politics", if you will, but it wasn't until recently that I started to realize how big a factor social media must have played. I was blind to an entire alternate reality that everyone else lived within. It's still mind-boggling trying to imagine what living in that world must be like.

I feel really bad for the younger generation because social media and technology has created an epidemic of loneliness and comparison. I'm twice her age and didn't grow with it but at one point was completely addicted to social media on all of the major platforms. It took a lot of conscious effort and deleting the apps multiple times, but I know have a super healthy relationship with social media. I no longer post on IG, just lurk from time to time. The only reason I'm on social media now is that I've been growing my business on it and if it wasn't for that, I'd be completely off IG and TikTok. But it's great because I'm only on it for business and not for pleasure, so I don't fall into the same trap that I used when I had an unhealthy relationship with social media. I've seen friends with depression due to social media and have advised them to delete the apps, but only they can help themselves. I can only bring awareness to the issue, but it's up to them to make the change.

My advice just delete it and take that 30 days as a challenge not to log back in.

I quit social media less than 2 weeks ago and it’s already changed my life. I’m studying for a PT qualification and working out consistently, I’m spending more time joyously with my husband and I feel closer to God. I’m also actually talking to friends more than simply seeing what they’re doing on socials. I’m more present with my baby. I love it. The only reason I’d go back is to run a PT business from insta.

I really enjoyed your sharing. The different phases and emotions you mentioned really resonated with me because I felt those same things after quitting social media. Just from my personal view, two things about social media struck me as ironic. The first was that using it as a tool to connect or keep in touch with others leads to the opposite actually happening. Maybe because looking at their daily posts or pictures or status gives the false sense of keeping up with how friends are doing but it's just not the same depth of connection doing something or talking with someone in person. And so the drifting of friendship happens. And the other is how in the process of trying to share who we are, it seems inevitable that we lose our sense of self since we're adjusting what we post based on feedback and validation and that molds our identity over time. I really what you're advocating for--not just a temporary detox and then jumping back into it but a lifestyle change and to find more meaning in reaching personal goals and really connecting with others in person. Stay awesome!

More mental busyness with social media means more chaos in mind. More anticipation on what's going on on social media and each notification means your time focused on other things is distracted. But with 100% confidence, without regular meditation practice and passing through the bliss/rapture experience, inner calm will not come in a lasting way for that monkey mind which jumps from one thing to another.

Holy hell, you're so calm and chill. I like that! I've removed my instagram app long time ago and been good without it for a couple of years, but then I started coming to the events and meeting new people, and they all were exchanging their instagrams and I had to dive into it again just to be in contact with them. Now I'm on that hook again, posting stories daily and my new "friends" liking them. Especially funny considering that most of new acquitances end up there, being subs on my insta profile and liking my stories. That's like the maximum level of communication they do. I think we as a society still don't know how to make friends and stay friends. I wish I knew the answer.

I've deleted social media so many times, signed out of them and then re-downloaded them. I think that the reason I really don't like social media anymore is because it's changed. Instagram used to be so simple and about just seeing your friend's pictures. Overtime it's become about influencers, and now my feed is mainly random influencers and ads for products or clothing. Also reels has made it so that you honestly have no control over what you see, and it's a bunch of random videos from people about anything. You can't control if what you see is positive or negative. It's just different now. To me it's more random with constant videos and you get sucked into posts from strangers on your search page instead of how it started out which was just to keep up with friends (plus maybe the celebrities you followed).

Tash, what a great video ! I was surprised to feel SO calm while watching your video. There is definitely something different about you and I have to say, I have two friends who don't have social media and you can FEEL they don't have them. Or at least, you can feel that also with the people who do have social media but who don't use them very much. Like maximum once a day, a few times a week. They are way more in control. As least, you didn't have this trend on tiktok where people identify as an orange or as a goat haha (omg). I do have social media (instagram mostly) but I put strict rules : I do not use it for personal reasons, it's to promote my activity and talk about what seems important to me. I use it max once a day and for 10 minutes and then I quit. It's been working GREAT so far, I have found a good balance and it's just a tool. But let me tell you, you are brave, because rare are the people who dare to live without social media. Afraid or being lonely, missing a lot of events... So bravo ! You seem like a super cool girl ! :D

I appreciate your talk Tash, you are very very inspiring. Unfortunately, as humans we are wired to have this FOMO (fear of missing out) and deleting social media makes that fear intensify for a short period of time which keeps us falling in the "I'll download it and use it productively" or " I'll control myself this time" rabbit hole. Thats okay IG as long as you're not lying to yourself (most people do). I used to be really active on Instagram and Discord but not anymore really (at least I don't consider myself so since I've deleted them). I am doing a no scroll September at the moment but I find that I get stuck on KZbin watching things so I need to probably give myself a limit on KZbin. I’m sad to hear that you felt at 15 that you needed to quit social media. It’s so unfortunate young people are addicted to social media. But I agree, sending a photo to a friend and actually catching up with someone, even if it’s just a phone call it’s so much for personal than watching someone’s story.

What's really hard is finding out that a lot of people I felt close to were something less than real friends. Not to say bad people, or that they didn't honestly like me, but if you take away the easy access of social media, there will be people you like who just don't make the effort anymore.

I found this video profoundly touching for some reason. You must be only in your early 20s now! So wise for someone so young. I am in my late 50s. I was in my late 20s when I first went online in the mid-90s. That means you never lived when the Internet didn't exist! 😳 I never really realized this until social media became a thing: I'm a pretty private person. I do have a KZbin channel but I don't show my face. Honestly, I had no idea there is so much pressure for young people because of IG. I think you should create a course to help teenagers and young adults break their attachment to social media.

Ive been using it for a few months now. It's completely free and you can block certain apps/sites at particular times of the day and also by location. So when im at home i block SM until 11 am and i also block news websites until 5 pm. The news is really depressing these days. There is a lot of good in the world which includes spending time with friends. No point getting sad over something you cant control. We have to limit our social media and news consumption to have any chance of being happy in life.

I haven’t had social media for about 3 years now, and it does take a long time to wean yourself off of learned behaviors from social media. With that said, I would never go back to having social media steal time from my life with dismal ROI. Yes, you have to be with yourself and face the internal struggles that you may have used social media as a bandaid for. Also, the worst part is you realize how much you’ve changed but how the world hasn’t. It’s okay though, I think you’re better off in the end without a fictional reality of socials.

It was rough in the beginning because everyone would ask me things like "Hey, did you block me?" and I had to answer with "Oh no, I just deactivated" and then I would get this weird look. For me, social media has always been a toxic place from unrealistic beauty standards to people who only text to ask for notes. I think detoxing is the best descision I've ever made along with quitting music. I have a lot more time now and I'm working on my health, fitness, religion and studies.
