I Destroyed My Entire Family with a $99 DNA Test Kit... Relationship Stories

We've all been seeing the recent craze of DNA testing and whatnot, so my dad and I decided to jump in the bandwagon and we bought 2 from 23andme. We got our results back a few days ago and I went into the DNA relatives section to check out my matches. At the top it listed my dad as only sharing 29.2% DNA with me and being predicted to be a half-brother, which is impossible. This didn't make sense to me since we also shared a paternal haplogroup and we just look so alike, so he was definitely my father. My cousin also had taken the test a while back and she shared 24.6% with me, also predicted to be my half-sibling. We're supposed to share around 12%, being 1st cousins.
I couldn't think of a genetic relationship that would explain what I was seeing and I had doubts in the accuracy of the percentages, so I made this post on r/23andme, asking for help. Basically, the shared percentages are extremely accurate and highly unlikely to be false.

Story 2:
TIFU by getting a DNA test and revealing a family secret

Stories like this piss me off. OP always blame themselves, EVERYONE blames the "dad" for leaving and rarely do you hear the woman getting the blame and accountability they truly deserve on top of the legal system rewarding them with alimony and child support. WTF!!!

SAME, like, the uncle is dogshit for sleeping with his brother’s wife but frankly, if she was willing to cheat with her husband’s brother she would have cheated with any man who would have her. Intentionally sleeping with your partner’s sibling just feels like the most intentionally hurtful and malicious way you can cheat. Cheating with a random fucker would destroy your marriage but cheating with your partner’s sibling would destroy your marriage and your partner’s family and choosing that path is just, like an extra layer of dogshit on the dogshit sandwich

@@lennaedaley8676 honestly although OP and his dad are probably going through it right now, they now have a reason to cut this tumour out of their life. If she’s willing to frame her BIL and (bio)father of her child who she knows has a family for rape, she’d probably accuse her husband or her own son of rape if the situation suited her

Personally I don’t think it should be MANDATORY but a free OPTION. Only one parent consents (if there’s any cause to doubt). But in the event of a woman being raped and keeping the baby? That rapist has a tie to a child and they’ll want legal rights to them. Sperm donor? Adoption? Coincidental relationship with a previously pregnant woman? All these a man will KNOW the baby won’t be his biologically (or legally after his rights are terminated in adoption’s case)

I'm not dating, but I hope to have kids one day. It should be common sense for every father to have at least one DNA test conducted prenatally and independently. Sadly hospitals sometimes lie and say it is your child because they believe someone has to take care of the child. It is a mother's baby, it is a father's maybe. is a very apt phrase.

@@dodgedemonsrtx A lot of institutions will forge DNA results because they do not want to harm the child or mother. It isn't as common as it used to be, but it is still an issue where your DNA test results can be illegitimate. Sometimes the lab also screws up. Either in which report they send you or in processing. This is why you should have two tests done always. I recommend a prenatal as to avoid wasting resources on another man's child. A second test after the birth to confirm the results of the first test. The last is a saying. A baby is 100% the mothers, but the father has no such assurance. Hence it is his "maybe." Not my saying, but it circulates from time to time.

I, too, opened that gigantic can of worms. Two years ago, DH gave me a kit bc my father was adopted and I was interested in my background. It turns out my paternal bio grandfather was a male common garden tool who let many partners “ride the bus” often. (Bio Gpa was a public bus driver and they are *still* finding half-siblings.) My father’s bio relatives reached out due to a specific marker. Turns out my paternal side had been in the U.S. for a very long time (mostly against their will) and I am not German/Irish on the paternal line. Sorry, Gma Mary, no Irish eyes here...

It's broadly accurate enough to figure out if you are Slavic or not... since that's the issue at hand. Determining Races within the various surviving Homo Sapien species is not that difficult... so it can seperate the various Species (what is erroneous called Race) & then the breakdown of the racial differences within each species... so for Whites (species) than the racial distinctions of Slavic, Nordic, Germanic, Celtic, Latin, & the surviving pockets of Levantines. That's easy as fuck... it's when you start breaking down those races into geolocations is where it gets fuzzy, since it would throw me out as a Scottish Highlander as that's the part of the American ethnogensis recreated the same conditions which created the Scottish Highlander (distinct fron the Scottish Lowlanders) in the first place by a heavy infusion of Nordic into a Celtic pool.

And... you went to family dinners, visited him, stayed around his children, didn't terminate the pregnancy, he never asked about the child, never had the child DNA tested, never told any friends or parents, let him have a daughter and wife who he was with, etc. for what 19 years? And he is a what... one time rapist? And why wouldn't you get a DNA test and then tell? What... you are worried that they won't believe you? Humm... pregnancy is pretty solid proof. Husband certainly isn't likely to blame you. And your first reaction to your son is don't tell dad, rather than I need to tell him the truth now? Sure. I'd personally invite Dad on some vacation, spend some time at a beach or mountain hotel, and talk up hiking, the gym, etc. as soon as dad gets the ball rolling. I'd also let it be known to the family you never want to see uncle or mom for now. No invites if they are still around. Maybe in a few years.

Pro tip: always get a second test done by a reputable company through a medical professional. Never put 100% stock in these home tests. Sometimes the test is conducted incorrectly at the lab and churns out a false result. Other times they send you the wrong information. There was one family where the father abandoned the son because the lab mixed up his and his brother's results. He later had a second more reliable test done and proved he was the father. They are having a third test done (second for the person) on the brother to see if he is in fact his father's child and the lab had not screwed up. Or just save your money until you can go for a reputable company. Do note a lot of these companies add genetic information that otherwise doesn't exist to combat "racism." I personally would not touch one of these tests just based on accuracy alone. The fact they sell your DNA is another concern.

I believe in the early 70s they succeeded in with the test tube baby. but it all started in the 50s with them picking the healthiest sperm and placing it in the egg outside of the woman and in a test tube. If the egg split they put it back in the woman. But it failed more most of the time. That's why they used test tubes to try to perfect it which leads up to what i said about them actually growing the first test tube baby in the 70s. You have to remember we went to the moon first time in late 60s( Apollo 11 (July 16-24, 1969) was the spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. Commander Neil Armstrong ) so yea artificial insemination was in first stage development in the 50s.

There was a time period where artificial insemination was booming but quietly booming. The issue with it is that many “doctors” would collect random sperm from themselves or their students and use it.

I am 45yrs old.. I have NEVER EVER cheated on anyone at all. I've been cheated on and I would never put someone through that pain... My husband and I had a rough patch about 3yrs ago, bad, but I never even once thought about cheating on him.. We are stronger now but I just couldn't imagine someone touching me besides him... This is why right after the APGAR test the paternity should also be done next!!

I was married to my first wife for 5 years and we had 2 boys. We divorced and I got custody. I remarried 5 years later. One of my sons wound up in the hospital and we were told his test results. Imagine my chagrin when I was told that his blood type was O+. My ex wife and I are A+.

Actually it is entirely possible for two parents with bloodtype A+ to produce á child with O+ if both parents carry the O gene. The A gene is dominant but the O gene is non dominant. So if an individual inherits A gene from one parent and the O gene from the second parent then the child will always have bloodtype A. But when that child grows up it can still pass the O gene to his/her children and if the other parent also has a O gene and passes it down, then with two O genes the cild will always have O bloodtype. 😮

Honesty is the only correct policy. Also, Reddit commenters are getting annoyingly inconsistent. A wife cheats on her husband and it's "not your job to keep her secrets" but a grandma does it and it's "better to let her keep her dignity." Everyone involved has a right to know their parentage and it should be irrelevant if that means Grandma did something wrong or not.

Shit like this is why it should be legally mandated that the person named as the father be paternity tested at birth. Just make it a legal requirement and cut out any "You dont trust me" bullshit. That way fathers are held to account and cheaters get caught early and nobody is unfairly punished.

What is wrong with this pople? cheaters doesn't have dignitty, even if they are 87 years old. The grandma though she was going to keept her lie till death, she tried to hide in every possible way and told a lot of lies. She is a horrible person, and all she cared about was what her family members were going to think about her. And after all, why is this people on reddit telling him to let her live with dignity? They seem like those people that force the cheated to reconcile with the cheater because of the family. They are just crap.

When DNA kits became publically available, my brother, 2 years older than me, died before I could test him. Our sister said my mother had an affair and he was the child from that affair. She said my father decided to stay with her. We never looked even remotely similiar and he may have had a girl in the early 1970s, but I don't have a name or anything specific. I keep checking the companies I have tested with hoping the child, now about 50, will test with one of them. No luck yet.

"I couldn't think of a genetic relationship that would explain what I was seeing..." Really? I am in a tremendously mentally suppressed state with a tremendous lack of sleep and I understood just about instantly when you mentioned the part about your "father", and then it was reinforced when you mentioned your "cousin". I stopped the video maybe a few seconds after what I quoted above, so I have not heard the revelation of it, but I think the titles of a certain Robert De Niro movie and a Johnny Knoxville Jackass Presents movie are befitting here.

Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. If the test said you were half brothers with your "father", your "uncle" could not have been your father. It would have to be your "grandfather". Did they just not explain this correctly?

my mother found out, while my grandfather was on his deathbed. that she isn't his bio daughter. i don't know all the details but she got preggo by another guy and got with my grand dad. obviously he knew she was preggo but stayed with her and raised my mom like his own. i find it amazing that there's people in this world that can lie about something like that, for over 60 years, and then take it to their grave. my grand father, as the good man he was. let my mom know. she then found and met her bio dad and all of her half siblings. though i personally don't care to meet them(not close to anyone in my family) i am happy the truth...eventually...came out.

Common in those days to hide things. My paternal great grandmothers sister had a child out of wedlock at 16. The child became her little "sister", their entire life. Both never married and lived together until their passing. Her daughter never knew her as a mom, only as a sister. Common in cultures in the north for the grandmother to take in her first born grandchild and raise it as her own, but it is well known by all including the child who her mom is, and it all goes well, since grandmas always baby their first grand baby, and the new mother gets a bit of a respite.

Despite the drama - it is a good thing to know the truth. YOU have NOTHING to be ashamed of or feel guilt over or regret - NOTHING AT ALL. YOU ARE INNOCENT - and apparently your dad is just as innocent. Your non-traditional relationship with your mother is probably because you reminded her daily of her shameful behavior (who knows how long that went on). When the dust settles - you all will have to pick up the pieces and figure out how to be adults about it, forgive and move on. Good luck.
