I am in health care, not medical but dental. I wear colorful shadows all the time; deep and bright tones. Don’t let your career determine your makeup choices. 😘

Ahh, girlie about your reasoning for Subculture, I just want to say that I’m in med school and still rock the colorful, grungey, glittery looks I love! (Ok maybe not at 6am surgery rotations, but we love a glam Friday night look) I am interested in surgical fields like you, and I just want to say that you should wear whatever you want and express yourself however you want! I actually talked about my passion for makeup in a med school application/interview and my interviewer said she was happy to see passions/interests outside of medicine. So just realize that you can be whoever you want to be, if you are worried about getting viewed as “unprofessional” or won’t get taken seriously in the medicine, especially in a male dominated field, that is their loss for being small minded and making assumptions about how someone does their job based off how they look. Keep on keeping on with your journey:)
@elllana4 жыл бұрын
Seconding this as another med student (soon to be resident rip). I think really expressing yourself can be hard when you’re shadowing or on your first clinical rotations bc people already might not take you seriously when you’re just starting out, but the further up in your training you go the less people actually care about what you look like as long as you know your stuff. I save all my weird eyeshadow colors for night shifts because everyone’s too tired to look closely and they can’t tell if its makeup or bad lighting anyways. On applications/interviews spin your makeup hobby into something about you having great fine motor skills, attention to detail, and capacity to explore new techniques using what you already know. The channel is a representation of your work ethic, commitment, and time management skills. A career in medicine isn’t a dead end for creativity/self expression!!

Resident here. Not in a surgical specialty but I did during my rotations and no one ever said a thing (even got a few compliments). I always thought well people say surgeons need steady hands look at this winged eyeliner lol.

@cheki It is true that within the past 2-3 years, around 51% of medical students have been women (I am talking specifically about doctors, not nurses or PAs which I agree are definitely majority women). However from personal experience and statistically, many fields within medicine are still male dominated with less than 10% of many surgical specialties populated by female attendings. These numbers are getting better slowly every year, particularly within residency classes. For example, urology still has only about 8% female attendings, but the most recent class of matched urology residents is about 30% women. So the "next generation" of surgeons may have more women, but current surgeons out of training are by and large often men. I also have seen a difference between faculty at large urban academic hospitals, which tend to be more diverse as a whole, vs. suburban community or corporate hospitals which tend to still have an "old boys club" vibe with mostly older, male, white attendings. Even within female dominated specialties like OBGYN, there is a still notable difference when it comes to leadership, i.e. men are often the program director or chair of the department. I say all this not to get into an argument about what is and is not female dominated, but rather to show that we still have a lot of work to do when it comes to empowering women in whatever field they choose. It's not enough just to admit more female med students, it's about retention, opportunities for leadership, and letting women know they don't just have to pick pediatrics or gynecology because those are the "feminine" fields. Or choose nursing or PA route (if they do not want to) instead of medicine altogether because those professions are largely female-dominated. While I also agree that many biology majors in college are women, there is still a difference at least at my university among which scientists/professors have the most funding for their labs/power and influence within the institution. My original comment was about makeup within medicine. Even though I have been lucky to have supportive mentors, both male and female, I still feel intimidated walking into an OR where all the surgeons are men and all the women are nurses or technicians. I worry that if I appear too "girly," I won't be taken seriously as a future surgeon, and I just hope to encourage women in a similar situation to let those insecurities go, and be who you want to be. Being a badass surgeon and wearing eyeshadow are not mutually exclusive.

that you decluttered the moon spell palette kinda hurt, because I own it, actually because of you and it‘s one of my faves. When I work with it all of the shades perform great even the purples. I didn‘t bought the strawberry dream one because I wanted something more neutral and I just don‘t use so vibrant shades that much. 😂😂😂 I think it‘s super cool that you do frankenstein palettes, it‘s very inspiring and I think it‘s just a great idea!❤️

I did this but with lipsticks and glosses. I would pick out a weeks worth at a time and wear one each day. I could easily tell the ones I didn’t want to keep because I either left them until last or didn’t like how some of them felt on the lips all day. It was scary because I nearly went 3 months without wearing the same one twice...
