I think Arch Enemy is the biggest name in Melodic Death Metal. The 3 dark haired members are Swedish, the blond guitarist is American, and Alissa White-Gluz is from Montreal. Alissa does have a great clean voice as well, but Arch Enemy songs rarely call for it.

@@JMEAUS22 I *Love* Insomnium and Dark Tranquillity, but I don’t think either are top in popularity for melo-death. You could throw in tons of other bands: Soilwork, Mnemic, Omnium Gatherum, Amorphis, Opeth (kinda, but they are part of the scene), At the Gates, Hypocrisy, The Haunted, Scar Symmetry, and like you said…many more. Most people think of Gothenburg Sweden as the origin of the sound- originally it was just known as “Gothenburg Metal” and started with the big bands there (At The Gates, I’m Flames, Dark Tranquillity, etc).

Recommend Simone Simons' (singer from Epica) single "Cradle To Grave" featuring Alissa. The music was written and played by none other that Arjen Lucassen from Ayreon, so you get an Epica/Arch Enemy/ Ayreon collaboration and get to hear Alissa's clean and harsh vocals. What's not to love? Also, Charlotte Wessels (ex Delain) has released a new single today called "Ode To The West Wind" which also features Alissa. Also I'd highly recommend Nita Strauss and Alissa's "The Wolf You Feed". Nita is a phenomenal guitarist.

You should go for "Nemesis" by Arch Enemy, there are excellent live videos with the former vocalist Angela Gossow, the "Godmother of Death Metal Growling", live in Tokyo, and with Alyssa, the vocalist you just saw, live in Wacken. Both are fantastic. Many say, that Angela had an even fiercer growl! She still manages the band but retired from stage.

Thank you for finally giving some space to such a great band like Arch Enemy on your YT channel. Singer Alissa White Gluz is a really great singer and "clean" vocals, not just growling. She is one of the first women to sing growling. She started her career in the band "The Agonist" back in 2004, and moved to Arch Enemy in 2014, where she replaced the also great growling singer Angela Gossow. Please do a reaction to the song "Handshake With Hell" where Alissa really shines both with her clean voice and her growling. Thank you for the great reaction, I love your channel and I am very happy to follow your reactions. And thank you for finally doing a reaction for one of my favorite bands Arch Enemy.

Eagle Flies and Handshake are somewhat poor samples of their sound. If you've ever listened through an AE album those two songs are quite different, and they're there to cast a wide net among listeners. Then you have the heavy stuff that makes up for 90% of all their tracks. It's like Disturbed and Sound of Silence. So you might want to do a bread and butter Arch Enemy song before moving on. 🤘😎🔥 Their last single is dope!

I will suggest - REASON TO BELIEVE - because it's probably the song in Arch Enemy discography that Alissa is using her clean voice the most. 🔥😎🤘 Like - The Eagle Flies Alone - It's also one of their epic "ballades" , but if you are looking for an heavier song; my favorite is Avalanche (Wacken Open Air 2016)

You were quite right to say that, when performed live, the refrain "I" is yelled by the crowd. Alissa will almost always begin with the call and answer reminder "I,I, Forever". There is quite a lot of audience participation involved in a number of their songs, and it can include the crowd singing along to the guitar melodies. Although the genre is melodic death metal, I find a lot of their songs profoundly inspiring and this track is a prime example. Alissa White-Gluz needs recognition purely for her ability to modify her voice. Her palette of growls is quite broad, but she also has the ability to sing with raspy grit, or pure cleans in a number of styles (Her former band, The Agonist put out a track of her singing a part of Swan Lake in acapella - her operatic soprano voice is eye-opening).

As an anime fan you should check out their song (back when Angela was the vocalist) "The Day You Died", I especially recommend the "Live in Tokyo 2008" version. Side note if you want to hear Alissa do cleans I recommend her run as vocalist for "The Agonist" with songs like "Thank You Pain", "Panophobia" or, the song that got me into them back in the MySpace days (showing my age now) "Busness Suits And Combat Boots"

Alice sang in The Agonist in 2007, and even then she was already superior to all female vocalists. I consider her the best in the world because of her 4 octave range, her ability to sing opera, pop, classic heavy/speed/power metal and extreme. Her vocals can be both light and dark, ranging from high pitched screeching to black death style vocals to the squealing pig of a grindcore vocalist. With her growls and screams, she can destroy almost any vocalist. In Arch Enemy her abilities are limited to 90%. Her growls are so recognizable among thousands of vocalists....

Arch Enemy is kind of supergroup originated in Sweden and their various members have been in a number of well-known metal bands: Carcass, Armageddon, Spiritual Beggars, Carnage, Mercyful Fate, Nevermore, Alissa White-Gluz is their third vocalist. She joined them from the Canadian band The Agonist in 201 and replacing their former female vocalist Angela Gossow who become the group's manager.

Alissa White-Gluz joined Arch Enemy in 2014... She rose to fame as the singer of another metal band The Agonist from Canada. Before Jinjer... Arch Enemy redefined what a female vocalist could do when Angela Gossow joined the band in 2001 and could deliver a menacing death metal growl that shocked the male death metal growlers... It was exceptional to see a petite, blonde female sound so powerful on the mic... However, Angela grew weary of touring by 2012 and decided to step aside from Arch Enemy and focus on managing the band. Brief history of Arch Enemy: Michael Amott (guitar) from Sweden first rose to fame when he joined the UK band Carcass in the early 90's - their music was especially gory, grinding death metal... He left Carcass in 1993 and decided to form Arch Enemy w/ his brother Christopher Amott (guitar) and Johann Liiva (vocals)... They released their debut album 'Black Earth' in 1995 and it was a raw, death metal offering... They wanted more melodic influences on their next 2 albums - 'Stigmata' (1997) and 'Burning Bridges' (1999)... but sales were poor and Michael Amott felt that they needed a better vocalist. So, Johan Liiva was shown the door... Arch Enemy had solidified w/ Daniel Erlandsson (drums) and Sharlee D'Angelo (bass) in the line-up... They finally announced a female vocalist Angela Gossow from Germany as the new singer and their 4th album 'Wages of Sin' in 2001 marked a dramatic turnaround as record sales and interest in the band... By 2002, they were already headlining shows in the USA & Canada. Record sales grew w/ the next album 'Anthems of Rebellion' (2003) and the next album 'Doomsday Machine' (2005) also saw Arch Enemy play the touring festival Ozzfest '05 where the band made a huge impression. 'Rise of the tyrant' (2007) was another major success, followed by the re-recorded older tracks released in 2009 as 'The root of all evil'... 'Khaos Legions' (2011) marked the last album w/ Angela Gossow on vocals... Also, guitarist Christopher Amott also opted to leave Arch Enemy to focus on new projects. In 2014, Arch Enemy announced a new album 'War Eternal'... also adding that Alissa White-Gluz (vocals) had replaced Angela Gossow from the band The Agonist... She was more than capable of delivering the death metal vocals that Angela Gossow had perfected. Subsequent Arch enemy albums have been more diverse lately... 'Will to Power' (2017) had more melodic songs like 'Reason to believe' ... 'The world is yours'... 'The Eagle flies alone'... Their latest album 'Deceivers' was released in 2022 w/ the popular singles - 'Handshake with Hell'... 'House of Mirrors'... Since Christopher Amott's departure from AE... he was replaced by guitarists Nick Cordle... then, Jeff Loomis... and now, Joey Concepcion in late 2023... Alissa White-Gluz also announced plans to release a solo album to showcase her melodic singing voice. Other Arch Enemy classics - 'Ravenous' ... 'We will rise' ... 'War eternal' ... 'My apocalypse' ... 'Dead eyes see no future' ... 'You will know my name' ... 'Nemesis'... 'Revolution begins'... 'No Gods, no masters'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘

Redefined what a female vocalist could do? Bruh there were already female vocalists like Sharon Bascovsky, Dan Duffey and Lori Bravo doing harsh vocals before Gossow.

Alissa uses a mix of tonal and non-tonal styles. When she sounds super low, it’s non-tonal. When there’s pitch movement, she’s using a tonal style of harsh vocal. Tatiana from Jinjer uses primarily a non-tonal, while Courtney from Spiritbox uses primarily a tonal style. Another way to be able to tell the difference is non-tonal harsh vocals usually sound “muddy” and can be undistinguishable, whereas tonal harsh vocals are a lot more clear. Hope you continue on your journey with checking out metal bands.

She is a great replacement for original singer. 2 others you'd ❤ In This Moment and Rage of Light/ Melissa Bonny who is now with her own group Ad Infinitum. Ad Infinitum is more Nightwish'esque vs metal from Rage of Light.
