Arch Enemy with Angela Gossow was the band that really got me into death metal: the vocals and the guitar sound in particular. Before Arch Enemy, I only went as far as metalcore stuff (Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage etc), but it wasn't until I came to love Arch Enemy that I was able to open my mind to the vast, varied and fascinating world of metal beyond the mainstream. For that, I owe my love for death metal to Arch Enemy.

Same here. I was good with growling in balance, but not to the exclusion of clean vocals. Arch Enemy was the band that broke hearts on extreme metal for me. I was listening to a lot of Maiden at the time, so they hit the right niche, I guess.

Problem being that Johan Liiva is a much superior harsh vocalist, and picking a song from the era where he was the original vocalist seems... disrespectful, as his version both is superior and more vocally impressive. At least pick a song made as Gossow where the main vocalist(2000-2014), and when the songs made aren't outshined by direct comparison to his. All that being said, this isn't a knock on Gossows importance in the metal scene, and in particular showing the labels that they both work, and became a selling point. She is indeed a Godmother that deserves her metal star.

It's not a great first listen (I mean the song, not the reaction). There is nothing specifically epic about this song at first glance but then you forget about it and years later the melody starts randomly playing in your head all the time and you get reminded of the amount of energy this shit has. You just want to scream out the whole lyrics.
@StephenChapman2 жыл бұрын
I know there's bad blood and drama involved here, but, honestly, nothing I've heard her do in Arch Enemy has impressed me anywhere close to her vocals on The Agonist's 2009 album, "Lullabies of the Dormant Mind". Don't mistake that to mean that I don't think her vocal talent is present in Arch Enemy. I just think it's very one-dimensional as compared to that album which, IMHO, is an absolute masterpiece of an album for every musician involved on it. Arch Enemy just seems like a formulaic payday supergroup of top-tier metal musicians -- which, more power to them as they all certainly deserve it! I hope I'm not coming off as a "hater," because that's not my intention. The music of Arch Enemy on its own merits is certainly above average. For better or for worse, I'm just locked into comparing it to stuff they've all done prior and I wish a bit more of that would come through. For instance, Alissa doing a wider range of vocals in a song that, riff-wise, is closer to something Loomis wrote for the Nevermore album, "This Godless Endeavor". Admittedly, I haven't listened to any more than a handful of Arch Enemy songs per the current line-up, so I could be speaking out of ignorance on some of this. In that case, I'd love for someone to let me know which song(s) I'm sleeping on so I can check them out! \m/,

So happy to see Alissa featured and really looking forward to tea time! Her vocal range is staggering - from the very deepest growls to the Swan Lake acapella recorded with The Agonist - and her agility to move so rapidly between registers is incredible. I had difficulty with adjusting to growls but found that was because of exposure to people producing a dirge I could not understand. Alissa (and her predecessor at Arch Enemy, Angela Gossow) have terrific diction and it made a *world* of difference. I'm sure a lot of people don't understand why some of us enjoy this raw sound but fact is that life isn't always pretty and beautiful and there is something to be found in sounds of fury, regret, frustration, anger. Think of it this way - van Gogh's Starry Night is an incredible piece of art that is lovely to look at. But Munch's The Scream is ALSO an incredible piece of art. Should we discount it because it isn't pretty, because it is disquieting and unsettling and disturbing?

I saw Alissa with her previous band, The Agonist, years ago opening for Epica. After their set I purchased the album Lullabies For a Dormant Mind from Alissa herself. I had to scrounge up a fair amount of change to meet the price so I told her "nothing like buying metal with metal," which got a smile and a chuckle from her. My other big memory from that show was being rendered nearly deaf by a band called Scar Symmetry. Also, make no mistake, Alissa gets all the attention, and deserves every bit of it, but it is the guitars of Michael Amott and Jeff Loomis that are the band's backbone, laying down a jagged and blistering soundscape for the savage, sapphire-haired succubus to work her brutal magic.

Seriously thank you. For someone who loves hanging around the heavier side of music, my aversion to harsh vocals basically meant many fantastic musical journeys were off limits. But thanks to this channel I have warmed up to them, seriously Jinjer is incredible and I can now bridge some of the harsher of vocalists to them. Like everything, there are things I like and things I don't (music is subjective after all) but my musical horizons keep on broadening. Once again, thank you for these great journeys!!

"Handshake with hell" is a song I waited for since her performance with Tarja in Wacken "Deamons in you". Alissa can both kinds of singing very well. Indeed "Deamons are a girl's ..." is another great performance of her. In that one the combination with Powerwolf (Attila) is a amazing contrast of what vocalist can do to a song.

One of my all time favorites! Alissa is amazing with both clean and harsh styles. Can’t wait for the new album 🤘💙👑

Love their new stuff, especially House of Mirrors and Handshake with Hell. Really like the last one cause you get both her growls and her lovely clean vocals, much like Kamelot's Liar, Liar. Maybe react to that one and get some Tommy as well. My favorite Alissa perfromance is the music video with Powerwolf and Demons are a Girls Best Friend. Love the catchiness of the song, the church organ vibes, her harsh vocals that are a perfect fit for the song, and then the amazing costumes. Cosplay Elizabeth will totally nerd out over them, including Alissa's tiefling minions.

i remember her last band The Agonist and she has always been a model for most of my women friends, most songs are about staying strong even in your weakest moments and it saved me and my wife. Much love and love your reactions even if i don't comment, i have seen all of them and very instructive. Edit: Can't wait for your tea time with her (she is from where i am from, Montreal, Canada)

For me personally, the most interesting thing I heard was when you talked about Alissa's diction and how clear it is to understand the words. Because Julia did a song not too long ago and mentioned the exact same thing. As a lover of metal and listening to tons of harsh vocals I very much agree that her sound is easier to understand then most. As for the musicians you said how good you thought they were. Know that at one point (not sure if they still are) both guitarists we're ranked in the top 100. If you like those kinds of lists. Great song, great band, great reaction, great channel. Huge thumbs up👍 thank you for letting me start my weekend proper

War Eternal I think was the first song I heard from them right after Alissa came into the band in 2014 and I’ve been a fan ever since. Another really good example of pitch shifting with harsh vocals that is subtle but works is Amon Amarth. Their vocalist Johan switches from the more rounded gurgle sound to the snarly more nasal scream really well, and he has a really deep voice, very clear diction as well!

It’s great to see harsh vocals get love and analysis just like clean vocals. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but no reason that both can’t get representation on the channel, very much appreciated Elizabeth. Harsh vocals are just another form of expression after all. If you’re looking for more metal I recommend symphonic death metal band Fleshgod Apocalypse, they have so many gems, The Fool is a great example. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYmyppZ9bdeAa80

You should listen to Alyssa's previous band The Agonist as well as other collabs, in other to get a better picture of her voice because she also has great clean vocals. She was the first female I heard alternate between clean vocals and death growls in the same song, it must be 15 years ago now (yes, I discovered Otep after The Agonist). I think Thank You Pain would be a good one to start. PS. Yes, that vowel modification was done to achieve a higher pitch and, incidentally, that is one of the reasons why it's hard to understand harsh vocals. Just like opera singers, the vowel modification, dropping of the jaw and shape of the mouth that you need in order to produce the appropriate sound makes articulation a bit tricky. For higher pitches the mouth is shaped like an "A", like you said; and for lower pitches, like an "O". Unlike opera singers, harsh vocalists don't have to deal with lifting the soft palate, but they have to work on activating the false vocal chords and other soft tissues. So yeah, as someone who does a bit of both, they are both very technically challenging in different ways.

You should react to older Arch Enemy performances as well, with their former singer Angela Gossow. Angela is a force of nature and has even harsher vocals compared to Alissa. Ravenous or Nemesis from their Tokyo tour are great performances.

Makes me sad all these reactors do modern arch enemy. Angela was one of the best live death metal singers ever regardless of gender and among female ones she’s the best. So much power and brutality. Alissa is cool but the band just is not the same at all for me without Chris/Angela, a lot more commercialized now too. In my comment I recommend the same 2 songs as you plus “we will rise”, she’s incredible the whole performance tho and that is the definitive live arch enemy show. Angel’s brutal and ferocious vocals and Chris’s guitar/songwriting just could be replaced for me. Wish they got the same kind of fame they do now in the angela era but they were far less commercialized then so I’m not surprised they didnt get huge.
@Goran3102 жыл бұрын
@@puppetmaster8551 I really like Alissa but I just can't force myself to listen AE with her on vocals. Seems that everyone loves Handshake with hell but I just..... just not the same Arch enemy as it was with Johan or Angela and Chris of course. I felt the same when Robert joined Metallica but I got used to him so maybe with time I'll get used to Alissa in AE 🤣🤣🤣
@puppetmaster85512 жыл бұрын
@@Goran310 ya I just can’t really enjoy her vocals in AE after having to follow up Angela, just lacks the same power and brutality, Im just not a fan of the clean vocals in AE either even tho she’s a good singer, thought she fit much better in her old band the agonist. Their music just isn’t nearly as good and live they will never top performances like the Japan 08 one when Angela/Chris were in the band. The music they made with johan was quality too, I didn’t think he was the great death metal vocalist but the music was amazing and his vocals were serviceable, I think they upgraded vocally by a lot when they got Angela and they continued making a lot of great music. The magic is just gone now with no Chris of Angela. I’m glad they’ve gotten way more popular now so the guys are raking in a lot for money but their sound is way more bland and commercialized. On another note at least Chris is still a part of a great melodeath even if it isn’t AE, current dark tranquility is way better than current AE imo.

This is my absolute favorite band. 'You Will Know My Name' is my favorite song, partly because of how I feel I can relate to the lyrics, though it's one of those bands that really hasn't ever released a song that isn't good with Alissa, nor Angela. Their costume design and hair is always awesome. One of the newer ones 'Deceiver, Deceiver' also had an amazing video btw. EDIT: There are alot of people who complain alot about Angela not doing the vocals here anymore. This is one of the few cases where what couldn't get any better stayed just as good after a change. Angela is extremely talented and no one could have filled her place quite like Alissa did.

Alissa's vocals are great, but this band has become extremely generic and boring. Wish Loomis works on his solo project soon. But sadly, only such generic music seems to sell and I can't blame Loomis for doing this at the moment.
@AllThingsProg2 жыл бұрын
@ayham kimo There's nothing wrong in listening to generic music as long as you enjoy it. But personally, i don't enjoy listening to generic music. I don't see any reason listening to Arch Enemy when there are literally 1000 other bands that sound like them. I'm interested to listen to bands that have their own sound and style. Jeff Loomis was a part of an extremely artistic band. It's just sad to see him do this.
@AllThingsProg2 жыл бұрын
@ayham kimo Not denying that Amott did not help kick-start this genre. I love Carcass and Carnage. Arch Enemy had a decent run with their first 3-4 albums, but the albums after that are simply copy-paste. Of course, you cannot come up with something completely original. No band/artist has and never will. You are bound to be influenced by the music that you like and lots of other factors. But if there is an effort made to make it unique, it shows in the music. I don't think Amott is interested in making any effort to be unique (just saying based on the albums Arch Enemy has been putting out over the past 20 years). Which is totally fine as well. Music can be treated as an art form or just a piece of product for sale. I'm sure a lot of people like to listen to the same style of melodeath. But personally, I like to keep things mixed. I don't see a reason to listen to the same repetitive thing (which I've heard countless times) when there's so much interesting music coming out today. I don't care if they pioneered this. Although generally speaking, most genre pioneers keep evolving and challenging themselves. You mentioned Carcass..pretty much all their albums till Surgical Steel sound different from each other.
@AllThingsProg2 жыл бұрын
@ayham kimo I'm not asking/expecting any band to change just for the sake of change. Sometimes change can be a natural process as well and not just due to a conscious effort. In fact most bands who make honest music, change their music with time. Based on events in their lives, exposure to new music, changes in taste, etc. It's bands like Arch Enemy who try to stick to a genre throughout their career just because their fan base expects a certain sound from them... That's just making music to stay relevant and make money. You don't create anything groundbreaking that way. If a band is happy doing that; good for them. But I wouldn't be interested in a band like that.
