These series aren't for the super fans. They are about growing the sport beyond us nerds who care about training methods and record progressions. These shows have gotten my girlfriend into F1 and cycling, but it's a different kind of fandom than "we" have. She's not watching a 2 hour race and worried about tyre strategy (let alone 6-hour TdF stage), but she follows all the competitors on instagram and wants the same glasses Tadej rides in. I have a lot of the same criticisms you do, but at the same time, I'm glad these shows exist because they have pulled in enough people to these obscure sports where I can actually talk to my gf and friends at work about them. That's a win in my book.

@JRuns See, I went into the series understanding that, but I don't think it even accomplished that well imo. It's almost written like a drama with a *tinge* of sports involved, which I think doesn't *need* to be the approach to get new fans on board. I just don't think it was well-done from a production/entertainment standpoint tbh; not strictly because it didn't include more "nerdy" aspects. Appreciate the comment though.

F1 has manufactured drama and some goofy ass shenanigans but it tells a story. Breakpoint and TdF actually reminded me very well of what happened during last seasons of tennis and tdf even if vaguely. Sprint is 90% top athletes monologuing about how they dont wanna just win but how they want to transcend the sport. Over and over again. Idk, i just think each of the other series had much better story telling and less repeated monologues.

Too much Lyles. Too much of Lyle’s’ mom. I just didn’t need to see so much of his story. The super aggressive attempt to be a stand out or a “star” is exhausting. Even some of his “trash talk” felt forced or formulaic. Would have definitely liked to have seen less of him and more training footage from the Jamaicans or the Mitchell camp. Oh and the Gabby segment was just boring. Even her friends seemed like they were reading a scripts and phoning in their interest in her life.

They should just make a documentary about the middle distances (400, 800, 1500) this olympic year (maybe starting after worlds last year). It's just way more exciting, because you actually can talk about some racing aspects. The Sprints are basically just a test of strength while the discussions about Kerr and Ingebrigtsen in the 1500 and their tactics leading to Paris have been discussed SO much. Add to that the three top guys in 400mH and the growing rivalry on the womens side now that Bol ran sub 51. And the 800 produced some of the best times since Rudisha. so yeah I think it's a lost opportunity, especially since so many people run long(er) distances, but don't sprint so it can be more familiar.

@@RunnerBoiIMO it’s par for the course with Netflix (not sure how many of what I’m about to list is Box to Box, I appreciate you including the production company). Those really into whatever sports they cover finds their show overly dramatic, slow, and kinda surface level. Anyone into Tennis, Golf, F1, Tour de France, and now track finds the shows to be rather average. Like you said, not bad but just not the best. But they do an amazing job bringing in new people, I think. I’ve been into some of the sports they cover lately because of Netflix shows, but then something like F1 that I was already into I had to stop watching DTS because the backstories paint a picture that isn’t always accurate to those who were closely following at a time, just a year before.

Pretty much, I think Sprint and DTS are pretty much the same thing. If you're too familiar with a sport, you probably won't like it, but people already well acquainted aren't the target audience. Existing informed fans don't really need a show on the sport at all. They'll already get all the type of detailed content they want by just reading up on news and watching all the events. FWIW, I watched Sprint with my girlfriend and found it fairly enjoyable, already having in mind what it would probably be like.

As someone else said, the series is to introduce casual viewers to the sport, hence why they only focused on the *very* well-known names like Lyles, Sha'Carri, the women's Jamaican triplet, and etc. Instead of lesser known names (to the casuals, mind you) like Tebogo, Simbine, etc. I was shocked that they didn't include Knighton or Bednarek. Also, I know some people are vocal about it, but Lyles is the face of track & field right now, whether they like it or not. He has the biggest personality in the sport and is currently the best in the world, which leads to more entertainment and views. Secondly, I don't think a distance-focused documentary would do well. They choose the short sprints because that is the most watched track events by a landslide. Short & sweet. People's attention-spans are not long enough to continuously watch distance events, hence why some people call the distance events "boring".

In terms of well known names I thought they would have gone in the history a bit. Even if just 10 minutes on Jesse Owens (though imo a full episode wouldn't be too much), then even if they skipped all the way to Ben Johnson/Carl Lewis, then skipped to Maurice Greene/Donovan Bailey/Michael Johnson, then to the Bolt era with Tyson/Yohan/Gatlin/Asafa as well. I feel like 1936 ~ 2017 combined could have been minimum 2 episodes, maximum 5 episodes, then they could have got into Lyles, Sha'Carri & the current land scape.

I don’t think they built enough tension for the men’s 100m finals. Like, where was Christian Coleman? Coleman ran 9.88 in the semis, and Seville with 9.86. It felt like they were just completely focused on Noah. Coleman had already beaten him numerous times last year and that would have built way more tension if they focused on Coleman more too. From a viewer standpoint it’s as if you knew Noah was going to win because of how much they focused on him. And I completely agree about where is the training. They should have gone more into depth about how hard they truly work. The Star Athletics group would have been perfect for that.

Have you watched any other box to box TV series and why they're so successful? It's the behind the scenes in the house stuff that endears the casual person to start following someone's career. You then need to feature the athletes who can be most receptive to that new attention, lyles is ideal as he legit wants to bring athletics to the fore, be a big character, whereas there's athletes who understandably like to just keep their head down and grind (likely Knighton, etc) and may not have even gave permission to the production team to feature any of them. We need both types of person in the sport, but for growing it, it undoubtedly needs characters for people to be able to causally follow hero/antihero arcs. Then original fans can feel all superior that they know about more athletes than just the podium, but at least a conversation can finally be had about T&F in your random workplace and people actually know a little bit of something. If you watched DTS, you see Danny Ric is a hero/ super likeable and receptive to being followed, putting themselves out there, like lando too. Max wins much much more, but prefers to keep his energy for the racing, and automatically gets a bit of a anti hero portrayal. Shows like this all add to the theatrics for casuals to be able to follow to some degree, and those of us who like the racing can still watch the actual racing and find our in depth extra results and raw numbers, and training stuff, on channels that follow sessions and workout. Agree on the relay interest/drama potential, putting national rivals in the same team towards one goal is like putting ocon and gasly in the same team

You wanting them to spend more time on Sha’Carri doesn’t fit within history. Before the 2023 season she was a sideshow of track and field and she had lost the respect of inside track. There’s also the struggle picking champions: Elaine Thompson, Letsile Tebogo and ShaCarri upset the a lot of plans. I’m sure there was lots of Elaine Thompson footage left on the cutting room floor and a lot of Sha’Carri footage purchased from her camp after her win. Tebogo medaled in both the 100-200, but was not included, but Jacobs was in disregard to his 2022 season. I think they did the best they could with humans.

This was pointed out in another youtuber's video on sprint, but it's crazy how they focused so much on zharnel hughes vs noah lyles in the london diamond league 2023 when tebogo had one of the best closes ever and beat zharnel. Not including tebogo is an absolute travesty

I really like and agree with your analysis throughout the video. I enjoyed it just to have more sprinting to watch. But after listening to your vid I agree. It would be interesting to hear producers comments and what it was like filming. To your point they could have sought out far more engaging characters. Damn, as much as I appreciate what Noah is trying to do for track and I love that he is an extrovert. He really is not as interesting, or physically attractive as some of the other sprinters. I love him, but just thinking business wise. To that point, people don’t step up to be transparent the way Noah does. He clearly was the most willing to have the cameras around. Either way glad you made this video, I enjoyed it.

The only reason I watched this series is because a friend said it was good. He was wrong... I agree with a lot of the points you made, but feel you could have added: (1) I get the appeal of Lyles and Richardson to a large swath of the American public. They're loud, arrogant, flamboyant and full of bravado. But the truth is, outside the US, this persona is more of a repellant than an attraction. The series would have been better had there been much less emphasis on these two athletes; (2) OK, I also get the fact that for several decades, the short sprints have been largely a battle between the US and Jamaica. But the landscape is changing. Yes, while they included Zharnel Hughes, this series failed to cover Botswana's Letsile Tebogo. Seriously?? The kid is on the verge of becoming a superstar! (3) The other night I heard an interview with Jess Hull after she set the 2000m WR and a few days after she ran 3:50 for 1500m. I came away struck not by what she had accomplished, but by her incredible grace and humility. I may be an outlier here, but in my opinion, the world needs to see and hear more Jess Hulls and less Lyles...

Maybe they didn't sign Tebogo to be int he series? Also Hughes was the WL in the 100m for most of the season, why wouldn't you focus on him for the filming. They can only show what they filmed. So if they didn't or couldn't film Tebogo, they can't have anything about Tebogo.

Yea but how many times will she do that. In 2022, she got asked a zillion times and she answered. There’s a video of her in 2022, at a mixed zone saying she takes accountability for her bad 2022 season and she knows what needs to do in 2023. Letsrun and their journalists are always negative, regurgitating negative past that are irrelevant to the present. They still hounding Coleman about 2020 in 2024. This is not journalism, it serves no one, it’s just for clicks.
