Good, it wasn't just me. LOL. I am seeing the bits breaking and wondering where the lubricant is. Always use something to make it easier and keep bits cool when drilling in steel.

just coming to say that, heat is the enemy.. lower the heat makes the bit last longer.
@lkastaasАй бұрын
@@LonestarHawaiianHi! Three things to consider: 1. start with smaller holes and gradually make them larger. 2. Don’t drill into the ground - it will dull the bore bit. 3 Slow speed and little spray or drop of oil will prolong the life of the bore bits. Keep up the good work - it will be a very nice place to work on your projects.
@kwindersАй бұрын
Use actual cutting oil like drill/tap oil as it helps the bits bite verses regular oil or spray lubricant will allow more slippage and slow the cutting. Also, as noted, speed is important. If you go too fast, it will burn the bits. The dirt will kill the bits. I was also wondering why not drill the holes, then paint them, or at least add primer and paint to the holes?

I am learning so much from watching all of your shop build videos! I don't have an inspection requirement where I am (plus I am not doing brick), but I did have a bit of a struggle getting the neighborhood architectural committee to approve my design. To be fair, they did help me find the right way to get to "yes". Keep up the shop videos - I need you to stay ahead of me lol

Drilling metal tips…. You’er drill speed is set too high (metal cuts at Lowe speeds) and you need to use cutting fluid or oil to lubricant the bit.

Chad, I really respect a man who is a Do it Yourselfer! I think that your building project is looking totally awesome, and I cannot wait to the brickwork! I am a hugh advocate of DIYer's, and as such I have done most of the work on my house for ten+ years. I believe that when you put your blood; sweat; tears as well as your heart and soul into a project that it's reward is to stand back and say, "I did that and it looks gosh darn good"! Well done, Chad!

Great videos! Much more informational watching a non-pro do this work than a pro. We dont have the tools that a "pro" uses, so we have to use what we do have! I hate to watch an instructional video to learn how to do something and they have a million dollar tool that I'm not gonna buy to just use it once. Thanks for the content!

Congratulations Chad, what an amazing feeling you must have and as a fan of not only the channel, the car enthusiast aspect, but of the little guy, getting things done through blood, sweat and tears, you've done an amazing job and it's so cool to see you bring it home and next up, bricking this damn shop! I can't wait until it's completed. I reached out recently and gave you some contact info for the bricks, I hope that was helpful! Thanks, Brian - Prosper, TX

Drill smaller holes first and then work up. It saves your energy and frustration. They make many different thresholds for that kind of door. The weatherstripping is also special for that kind of door. Home Depot will not have it.

I know you're doing your best with this garage build and I respect you for that, one thing I would have suggested was to ask the steel supplier to drill out those holes for you. Most times they know how far apart it goes. I only speak from experience as a builder in Ontario

Chad, that "strike plate" on the door handle can be adjusted so you don't have to push on the door with your foot. Simply use a regular screw driver to bend the tab out causing the door handle not to latch until its pushed harder against the new weatherstriping. This will make it so you allign the dead bolt with its strike plate.

So from a machinists perspective. Drilling anything metal and thicker than sheet metal biggest thing is slow and steady win the race and keep the drill straight!
@Marcus_the_HumbleАй бұрын
I love your videos. Please don’t take this as any criticism. If I lived closer I would be over all the time helping. When drilling, pilot holes help. Use cutting oil, keep your drill straighter. Use thicker starter bits. I laugh when you say that new door is solid. They are known as hollow metal doors. When applying smoke gasket and weather stripping, place it on the jamb on the hinge side and on the stop at the header and latch side. It creates a better seal, compresses better and closes better. If you have to gently press the door shut to seal, that’s okay. If it’s too much you can file the middle of the strike plate a little to shift the latch point. If the door doesn’t shut well in the future, you can add a closer. A hydronic piston that assists the door closing. Last thing, you installed the door just fine. It’s easier to place the hinges on the door first. Then bring the door to the jamb and rest it on a 1/2” piece of conduit. With the door on the conduit you can easily roll/slide the door toward or away from the jamb. Tilt the hinges side of the door up or down. Then install one screw on the top hinge then force the door away from the jamb a little to place a second screw in a lower hinge and the rest is easy. When done, if the reveals are off. (1/16” hinge side, 1/8” header and latch side) you can throw the hinges and manipulate the gaps. You can google how to throw or shim hinges. Or Message me and I’ll help.

If you will be doing the bricks make sure you put flashing, weeps, and wall ties to help keep the bricks up and for the water escape behind the brick... depending your code its 16-24 inches above the ground where you put the weeps every 3rd head joint along the bottom walls, lentils, and doors. When drilling in them use oil and go slow or have tons of bits... it sucks to drill into lentils... Keep it up looks great so far...
@kennetheugene6402Ай бұрын
If you add oil while drilling strong steel, you keep the drill bit cool and lessen the wear and drill out the holes better.

In the future look into an automatic door seal, I know Pemco makes one, they may work really well for the bottom of your exterior door. It mounts into a channel on the bottom of the door and has a button on the hinge face of the door that drops the sweep when it is closed.

Fyi those drill bits aren't made of titanium. The gold coating is titanium nitride and is applied to a high speed steel drill. The coating is super thin but helps the drills last longer. There is a huge variety of coatings from mild to wild for tooling and that's why those spyder drills are the interesting blue hue. They using a different type of coating that may or may not be better than the TIN coating.

The hollow metal door you installed do not come with thresholds as they typically are ment to install a vinyl or aluminum u shape sweep you adjust to drag across the floor or across a handicap thresh hold you slide over the "stop" of the frame and anchor into the concrete. You can also get magnetic weather striping for those doors as well.

You should get your hands like plaster/cement casted, and then put the gloves on them and display them inside as part of the dream shop. Your "Helping Hands" (also maybe some photos and of course the other helpers like your wife and such) Bonus if you manage to pose them to like hold a hammer or something for extra effect. as for the inspector, as the changes could be seen from your fence, he probably just did the 'yup I see 'em, they fixed it' and moved on.

You can call it a lentol when it's installed i guess that's the engineering name for it. All it is is an angle iron 3×3 or 3×5 or 4×4 plus thickness 1/4" up to 1" if necessary. When I was fabricating I used 1" on big jobs. Hell, I've cut 12" slabs with a track burner & #5 tip & a whole oxygen bank set on 120 pds. Per square inch. That's alot of fun building a dump station or a slag pot hauler.😂😂😂

If there is a fire and everyone runs to the door you just open and run out and noone can block it from opening in panic. And inswing doors you can easily bang in. Outswing is harder to bang in/out.
