22:37 - When they say "the fight is set", it does not mean that it is "fixed" or fake, it just means that the 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘦 is set, it is on the calender, it is scheduled. He is NOT getting paid to lose. Rocky is saying he doesn't need a manager because manager's main job is to get fights for their fighters and he already has a fight so why do I need a manager? That's what he means that it is set. But of course Micky is also a trainer and can help Rocky that way too, and Rocky comes around in this scene, knowing he really needs the help if he is to have a chance at all. I think you will enjoy this series of films. Excited to see your reaction to the next few.

@amandamiquilena At this time in American culture, it was still understood to respect your elders, and Rocky knew what he did to Mickey and felt bad and wanted to be a better person. He also had either empathy or sympathy for Mickey.

Just want to clear up a slight misunderstanding, the fight being "set" only meant that it was scheduled, not that the outcome was predetermined. Rocky was telling Mick that the fight was already "set" because Mick wanted to be Rocky's manager, and one of the functions that a manager can provide is to hustle and arrange boxing matches for their fighters. Since the fight with Apollo was already set (setup, scheduled), Mick wouldn't factor into that as a manager. But, a boxing manager can also impart knowledge and help train a fighter prior to the match. The manager is also in the fighter's "corner" during the actual match, and can offer strategy and encouragement, moment to moment during the fight. So, despite not being able to affect the schedule or the details of the match, as that had already been established, Mick's offer to be Rocky's manager still held a lot of benefits for Rocky to accept. Also, Mick really needed a shot at being a part of a bigtime match because he missed his opportunity when he was a younger man, and Rocky's a good guy, so he took Mick on as his manager. I love this movie and have watched it many times. I've come to have a recent sense of increased respect for Apollo. He does come on with an inflated image of himself which can be off-putting, especially next to the elemental genuineness of Rocky. But as they emphasize in the film, they are putting on a show. It's a fight that coincides with the Bicentennial of the country; literally a once in a lifetime event. And Apollo goes into the fight facing an opponent he thinks is a novelty... but then the "novelty" lays him out in the first round. Apollo recovers, and only then decides to take Rocky seriously. But what that means out boxing Rocky and defeating him in the next several rounds. But that does not happen; it goes the distance. Apollo sticks with it every inch of the way, just as Rocky does. Don't get me wrong, it's Rocky's story, and Rocky's the guy I'm rooting for all the way. But it's interesting that Apollo isn't just a paper champion that folds the second things go sideways for him. Apollo also isn't just a caricature, though his showboating entrance to the ring suggests otherwise. It's his idea to fight Rocky, because he knows it will attract an audience. And, as mentioned, when he's already in the middle of the fight and only then realizes it's gonna be the fight of his life, he doesn't succumb, he takes it all the way with Rocky. Huge credit to Stallone as the writer and Carl Weathers's performance for not treating the "Heavy" as a two-dimensional character, which happens in sports movies (even some really good ones), but instead making Apollo a complex and interesting antagonist.
@vkdeen7570
@vkdeen7570 10 ай бұрын
this is the point and why apollo is so integral throughout the series... don't forget apollo outboxes rocky for the majority of rounds it's just because he tries to brawl with rocky that it becomes tough because that's rocky speciality. apollo is the "best" in outright skills there's actually sorta an analogous pairing in real life boxing ray Robinson and jake lamotta. sugar ray Robinson is considered by most to be the greatest p4p boxer of all time... unbelievably slick and well rounded (just like apollo). lamotta was known for being ridiculously tough and able to beat better opposition through will. although ssr beat him in the majority of their fights (they had a few)l) lamotta was the first person to beat srr by basically absorbing punishment and wearing him down

Good post, Tuco. I agree with everything you said. I do disagree though with your statement that Apollo is the antagonist. I feel that Apollo is the obstacle. Apollo is another human being, striving for the same thing that Rocky is striving for, but he’s not the antagonist. The antagonist is, misery, despair, homelessness, poverty, and loneliness especially. Those things weigh on the soul and that is what Rockies really is striving to overcome through boxing. I do love Apollo creed’s character.

Apollo Creed won by a SPLIT DECISION. There are 3 judges. 2 judges said Apollo won. 1 judge said Rocky won. It was a very close fight. A unanimous decision is when all 3 judges pick the same winner. Rocky lost the fight but he got his woman. That’s all that mattered to him. So he did win. 👍🏼

Hearing them announce Apollo Creed's victory in the background of Rocky and Adrian saying they love each other has gotta be one of the best moments in movie history. Chills everytime. Apollo may have gotten the decision but Rocky accomplished more than anyone thought he would, reached his goal, and got his girl. The outcome of the fight might as well be background noise from his perspective. He's got what's important right in front of him.

Great reaction Amanda! Your feeling of "pleasant surprise " and "not expecting" to like Rocky as much as you do - is exactly what we who watched it in movie theaters felt when it was a new release. That's why it won Best Movie Oscar award even though it had unknown actors and a low budget. Mickey the trainer was "The Penguin" in the original Batman. Joe Frazier who was introduced to the audience was a former world heavyweight champion at the time.

BUTKUS was Stallone's beloved Dog IRL. He was so broke before the Movie, he had to sell Butkus for $50. With his First Check, he went to where he sold him and waited Three days for the buyer to arrive. Stallone paid over 30 times what he sold him for, but it was well worth it! The Lead Street Singer was Sylvester's brother Frankie (Frankie also wrote that song). Stallone has always called this First and Foremost a Love Story, not an Action Movie. BTW, The Sequels are just as Good, if not better... Bigger Budgets meant better shots!

Most female reactors feel the same way at the moment Rocky prevents her leaving and corners her by the door. That would make most women feel very uncomfortable, regardless of Rocky's actual motives, let alone an extremely shy woman in a man's apartment for the first time. The moment quickly passes of course, but Amanda's reaction reflects perfectly just how uneasy Adrian was feeling at that point. @@MCGguitar698

I’ve seen younger reactors cringe some with that scene when he invites her in to his apartment and I totally understand why. I will give the old cliche (it was a different time) excuse but we see that Rocky was not a threat to her and we also know that he had known her through their frequent interactions at the pet store. I think he believed he could pull her out of her shell. His feelings towards her were always genuine.

This film is great. (Rocky II as well). There is no other way to state it. Sylvester Stallone wrote the screeplay in 3.5 days I believe. Was offered $250,000 USD (in 1976 dollars) and refused because he wanted to play the lead role. Finally was given a shoestring budget to make the film. Had to use friends and family for extras. Rocky was highest grossing movie of 1976. Nomiated for 10 Academy Awards and won three including best picture. Sylvester Stallone and Charlie Chaplin (The Great Dictator) are the only two artists to receive nominations in both Best Screenplay and Best Actor at the Academy Awards. Orson Welles (Citizen Kane) also accomplished this however he shared his writing nomination with another screenwriter. Sylvester Stallone plays the same role in 8 films over a 42 year timeframe. This is the majority of his lifetime. We watch him the age of himself in Rocky until he's the age of Micky.

A couple of others points. The scene where Adrian confronts Paulie and stands her ground but ultimately runs to her room and moves in with Rocky in a way reflects Rocky's fight at the end of the film. Both of them have worked on themselves with the support of each other and have accomplished something they likely never would have without each other. Rocky wanted to go the distance to prove to himself that he is worthy. Once that was accomplished, (winning the fight was never the goal) he focuses back on his top priorities....Adrian. Even notices that she lost her hat. The triumphant music at the end is about Rocky and Adrian's transcendence into being more than they ever thought possible and also the triumph of their love for each other. Rocky is the first film ever made in which the last line of dialogue is: "I love you..." I feel like that is important.

Amanda - One of the biggest things many people (especially younger people) miss is that this movie came out during three very important points in American history. It was one year after the US officially ended the war in Vietnam (which was a loss), two years after the President resigned, and 1976 was our 200 year bicentennial. And it was the last reason why Apollo Creed came into the fight dressed like George Washington and later Uncle Sam. More than anything the American people needed hope... desperate hope after Vietnam and Watergate, and this movie provided that hope.

I don't know why anyone would tell you this is a boxing movie; everyone knows it's a love story. Yes, Talia Shire is in "The Godfather", and the fight was never "fixed" he wasn't being asked to "take a dive" (lose) not like in the movie "Snatch", he was just being paid to fight. You have a really fun channel :).

Hi Amanda, you look nice!😊 The $40 Rocky got for that first fight is $229 today adjusted for inflation. When Sylvester Stallone tried selling the script for Rocky several studios were willing to buy it, but he would only sell the script if they allowed him to star in it. So, it took a long time to find someone to finance the film and let him star in it. Yep, Talia Shire (Adrian) was in "The Godfather". She is part of the Coppola family. Her brother is the director of The Godfather, Francis Ford Coppola. Apollo really didn't bother training for his fight with Rocky because he thought he had no chance of winning. Rocky on the other hand was training to win the fight or at least go the distance. This was 1976 and the American bicentennial (200 years) anniversary which Apollo dresses for entering the ring. I always say the Rocky films are a love story. The first four Rocky films are all very good! Great reactions to your very first Rocky film, Amanda!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

i got to watch this fantastic movie again and loved every minute as always. I also learned so very much about you; your desire to alter the characters into what you perceive as appropriate behavior, how you perceived their first romantic encounter as 'uncomfortable' even threatening because he was dominant and expressive of his attraction to her though never did he cross the line and do even one thing without her permission. Very quick to assume the worst about their awkward, inexperienced beginning to their private relationship Don't get me wrong, I don't blame you, you're a 21st century woman and were raised in a world that views men, especially confident men, as a threat. In a world where if a man tells a woman she looks good, he goes on the suspect list. ("Rocky isn't a boxing movie, it's a love story." Sylvester Stallone )

I noticed everybody has feelings about Rocky's date with Adrian, it seems creepy by today's standards but this was nearly 50-years now so things dating was done very differently back than. A lot of people had reservations about Micky coming to Rocky after he was given an opportunity, but Micky was hard on Rocky because he really did care about him like a son and was very upset with Rocky being a collector for a gangster. He felted he could do and be so much more and that he was wasting his life. So once he was offered an opportunity Micky wanted to make sure they wouldn't hurt Rocky and that he didn't get hurt. Thats why you hard Micky say stay down, he was more worried about Rocky's health not the title he didn't want to see him take anymore of a beating, Micky really loves Rocky and you'll see it as the Rocky movies go on. Apollo beat Rocky on points, he won by split decision.

Good way to say it, things were different then. In today's world, there is no more nuance. Everything is either completely obvious or "it's stupid" or something. Don't people understand that in a relationship the two people involved understand what's happening in a way only the two of them can understand? And things shouldn't have to be completely explained, which today's audience seems to want.

He became a stumbling old man with shakes and stutters as he tried to speak. There are lots of documentaries and movies about Ali. I think you might find one you might like. A documentary of Ali is The Rumble in the Junble where he traveled to Africa to fight George Foreman. It was a grueling match. It showed how Ali prepared for the fight and how he interacted with the local culture. You might recognize Foreman in tv commercials while selling grills named after him.

It's the best acting Stallone ever did. After that, he just went action star with a few exceptions.

What is the box back in the late 70s early 80s and a coach/manager is a huge deal. Often times in a fight you won’t recognize the direction things are going or the mistakes you’re making. Sometimes you just need someone to pray with you in your corner. The manager gets a cut of the money yes, but that’s not Mickey’s goal. I have a picture of Stallone with my last manager and his gym in Southern California.

Rocky is only a joke until you watch it. It's a great love story with a little boxing. Beautiful film.

Great reaction! Just fyi, the fight being 'set' didnt mean it was 'fixed'. They were just saying it had been arranged.

Amanda, when he said the fight was set. He meant the date, time and place. And that the boxing commission had already sanctioned it. Not that it was rigged.

When it comes to Rocky its important to know what it means to Stallone. He wasn't a star yet snd the film launched him, he was broke and had to sell his dog (He got him back and he plays Buttkus) to make ends meet. He was also offered alot of money if someone else played Rocky but he turned it down. Rocky is very much Stallone they're both looking for their big chance in a difficult industry to navigate on your own

The fight being set just meant it had been announced and a date set. "Fixed" is what they say if it's crooked and one is set to lose.

Sylvester Stallone wrote all the Rocky movies (except #5) himself, and he said once in an interview that people are always mistaken that Rocky is about boxing. According to him, it’s a love story, and the boxing is just there to move the plot along.

Amanda. Everyone says the same thing, being surprised. It takes place with boxing as a backdrop, but it's more a story of struggle, perseverance, and heart. I've seen sports movies that put me to sleep, but this wasn't just a sports movie. Please watch the rest of the series; it's a very good series. :)

In the first scene where Rocky got paid $40 for the fight would be $228 in today's money so it wasn't actually too bad of a pay day

According to inflation calculater, $40 in 1979 (the year the movie was released), is equivalent to $169 today.

I always thought this movie is great because Rocky loses it's not about winning or losing it's about going the distance specially against someone that you can't beat and being like I'll still be standing when the bell rings

16:47 In this situation you would call 911 and I would just let her leave if she wanted to. What's strange is when a woman tells her friend not to date a guy because he's bad for her. Then when the friend listens the woman turns around and dates the "bad" guy.

I find it curious how new generations look at the relationship between Rocky and Adrian and how he approaches her according to what is considered appropriate or not today. You know you're old when Joe Frazier shows up and no one knows him...
