Oh, my lord, as good as these first 4 episodes are, it’s from episode 5 onward that you will realize the true extent of the awesomeness of this show. Have tissues handy, and be ready to be blown away!!

Nobody is "gaslighting" the kids. Gaslighting is more mental manipulation. Both parties know the facts but one party tries to convince the other the facts are different. In the show, the parents are making rational assumptions. "Not a kid in the woods." "A basement isn't on the plans, must be a crawlspace." "Monsters aren't real." The parents aren't lying. Sure, they are just assuming, but they don't know they're living in a haunted TV show.

Yeah, the parents are reacting normally here. They think the kids are imagining things as most kids do.

Clara is Mrs. Dudley. She would bring food to the lady in the "sick bed" that Theo mentioned.

I do find it kinda funny when people act like Shirley had everyone agree w her at knifepoint about the book 😭 ultimately they made a fool out of her for no reason since they could express themselves freely (and they do, all throughout the show - be it her family members or husband)

There are hidden ghosts in a lot of the scenes at Hill House. I missed most of them when I originally saw it, but they're all over the place.

Glad you're enjoying such a great series. It's a bit unfair though to say the parents were gaslighting the kids, gaslighting is an intentional act by someone who knows the truth but wants the other person to doubt the truth and themselves. It's perfectly reasonable for the parents to believe its in the kids imagination from their perspective
@lynetteoliva1256
@lynetteoliva1256 3 ай бұрын
In the mom's case, it could be seen as gaslighting. I think she dismisses the things Luke & Nellie tell her because she thinks she's protecting them from the bad things by not acknowledging them.

@@lynetteoliva1256 Spoilers............................................................................................................................................................................................................I get what you mean but at that point in the story neither parent had seen much or anything at all. It's just a term that gets thrown about a lot for the wrong reasons. The closest anything gets to what could be called gaslighting is what the house does not the parents. TBH the American film version of the play Gas Light (where the term comes from) would be great fodder for a reaction

Gaslighting - one of the most commonly misused words over the past few years.

You should React to the Film Gaslight from 1944 its based on the play (Gas Light) from where the term gaslighting comes from. Its a form of psychological manipulation with nefarious goals not something you do because you don't believe someone and are trying to give a rational explanation, remember the characters are not privy to to a lot of the information we are at any one time.

Theo's _touch_ was activated when the ghost squeezed her hand. Olivia was wrong to assume only the girls were sensitive. All her children were. It's possible Hugh is as well.The number _five_ is a motif in the series. There are the five kittens. These correspond to the five children. Note two kittens were singled out for special attention by the mother figure, Shirley. All very ominous. The children manifest five supernatural senses: Sight (Steve), Taste (Shirley), Touch (Theo), Smell (Luke), Hearing (Nellie). Steven has supernatural sight, he sees things supernatural even without realising it. When Theo remarks on his level of detail in his book on the last night even though he was asleep, it's an observation about his sight. Olivia also saw things in her dreams. Steve also sees things while awake, but, for him, it's mental illness. Shirley's sense is manifested by her sleep-talking. She's speaking in _tongues_ as it were. We know all about Theo's touch. Luke said Hazel's room smells, and Nellie says the house is loud. The children's personalities also are reflective of the theoretical five stages of grief: Denial (Steve), Anger (Shirley), Bargaining (Theo), Depression (Luke) and Acceptance (Nellie). Hill House was built by Jacob Hill, and he kept dogs. He had two children: Hazel and William. Hazel had a daughter, Jacqueline. William had a daughter and a son. The son became wheelchair bound at some point. The Hill grandchildren are what Olivia saw when the put on (touched) the shawl in the library. Hazel's bedroom had the old-fashioned intercom. Clara is Horace Dudley's wife. In Hazel's old-age, Clara took care of her. Hazel was calling for Clara on the intercom and hers was the image we saw reflected in the intercom's bell. This is what Luke and Nell saw and heard in the kitchen. The Crain's probably bought Hill House from Clara's estate. The Dudleys try to warn the Crains about the house but do so indirectly and subtly because the Crains are, rather surprisingly, great skeptics of the supernatural. Steven still is today. The bowler hat belonged to William, and he was the exceedingly tall ghost with the cane that Luke saw. When her father Jacob died, Hazel killed his dogs, whom I presume were vicious. All the children hear ghost dogs. The are many motifs in the series, all have significance. There's the colour _red_ motif, the colour _blue_ motif, the _time_ motif, the aforementioned _five_ motif, the _dream/waking-up_ motif, the _twin-thing_ motif, the _fixing_ motif, the _time to come home_ motif etc. The details in this series are very important. In the end, everything fits together perfectly.

Your initial comment about Theo’s touch, while understandable, is not true. From the show’s own context-as well as the director’s commentary-all of the Crain girls were born with a “sensitivity.” The opening scene with the ghost isn’t meant to suggest that the ghost was a catalyst for Theo’s ability. (It’s also one of many call-backs to scenes/dialogue in the original novel.)

Apparently I'm blind to background details in shows/movies. I watched the whole thing and afterwards I looked up discussions on it and saw everyone talking about ghosts hidden throughout the show. I was like "Nooo.... I couldn't have missed all of them, right?" Turns out I did. I never saw one that wasn't supposed to be super obvious to the viewer lol. Even the old lady in the brass "intercom" reflection I almost didn't notice and I had to go back and watch it again to see what freaked the kid out. I'll also say, one thing I've noticed on rewatches with the little girl Theo was treating, when Theo was talking to the foster parents the kid was still in the room. Initially I thought she was just staring at the picture of the smiley face, but in hindsight I think she was also just not wanting to look at her foster dad based on how her whole back was turned rather than how you'd normally look at something in the corner on a wall from sitting down, just turning your head to look.

I think I noticed one during my first viewing and I'm glad I didn't know at the time that was something intentional. I just saw something creepy. I personally think that telling first time viewers about them can diminish the creepy effect and sets people up to hunt for the gimmick.

I find the partners of the Craine siblings fascinating. Trish for example--someone to whom Theo clearly feels a strong connection, which frightens yet attracts her. Trish likewise feels very strongly for Theo, right from the start, as if sensing before long there is a lot of pain there, and her reaction is to want to heal her, to help soothe that pain. Trish is essentially everything that Luke hoped Joey would be, save that Trish is not an addict, and clearly has her act together more than Joey has managed. Trish is to Theo what Arthur was to Nell. All these relationships--including Shirley and Stephen and Nellie with their spouses--are also weapons used against the siblings.

You are right there are hidden ghosts out of focous in the Hill house scenes so good job for spotting them because they are very hard to spot or notice at times haha. Love episode 3 it is my favorite of them all personally because it is the scariest and also because I love seeing Meckenna Grace acting and Theo is my favorite of the siblings other than Nell herself. The actress of Theo Katie is actually Mike's real life wife and when she was doing this show she was pregnant with their first daughter and because of hat when she was born Katie named their daughter Theo haha. Mike himself suffered from alchohol and drugs but he eventually was able to get out of it and because of that in his shows you will see hints of that but this one is the one that shows it the most. If you like him as a director I hightly recommend you see his movies Doctor Sleep which is the sequal to the Shinning,Hush which is more of a thriller but was written by both him and his wife Katie and also starrs Katie herself, Occulas which is more of a psychological Horror than anything but so well done and his movie Ouijja 2 orgins of evil. Glad you are enjoying this show by the way.

Huh, I didn't realize that was the same director. I will say that I watched The Shining and didn't really understand the hype. The premise/lore was great, but I've found out that I'm not a fan of Kubrick's directing style. I absolutely loved Doctor Sleep and what it did for the lore. And while watching people react to this show I had noticed how similar some of the notes of lore were. Even down to Theo having something similar to the Shine. I guess that explains why I love this show when I also don't usually enjoy horror based stuff lol. Because the actual story has so much depth and is so well written/shown.

As someone who had a 7 year long weed addiction that turned into a 6 year alcohol addiction, episode 4 always hits different. I‘m almost 2 years clean now, but that stuff never goes away. Addiction is no joke, anyone that reads this and struggles with substance abuse, you can get out of it, but you need to ask for help. That‘s something I realized way too late. Admiting you have a problem is the first step, but the biggest one is asking for help. It‘ll do you good.

I loved it when young Theo told Mrs. Dudley what's what, then stared her down afterwards. Btw, kudos to your editor. The censoring of the curse words was seamless, barely perceptible.Better bring more Kleenex for the later episodes. You're gonna need them. Edit: After watching episode 4,I noticed you didn't edit the curse words in that one. Did you forget?

Hey chica! I loved your reaction to these 2 episodes, especially episode 3 "Touch".😊 When u thought u were tripping, catching sight of the multiple background ghosts. Hilarious! Yes, there was a face staring up at little Theo from the cellar, as well as the other places u mentioned. U didn't seem frightened by the ghoulie in the cellar that crawled after Luke. U didn't like it, & u were worried about little Luke. But, Theo waking up to Mr. Smiley got u.😄 The final thing for this episode was when Theo saw what her mom was going to look like when she died. U were so disturbed by it that u spoke in another language.😄 What was it, Danish? I think this episode was the more entertaining of the 2. Luke's episode is rather sad. 1st off, that old lady ghost calling for "Clara", she was calling for Mrs. Dudley, the housekeeper. The note that Joey left for Luke read DON'T FOLLOW ME, but Luke did because that's what he thought the apparition of Nell wanted him to do when she said "Go!". Ay chica, u were so caught up in the little romance u thought was brewing between Luke & Joey that u failed to notice her hand reaching for his pocket to snag the $200. Guess the distraction worked on u too.😄 When u started to tear up & cry, I was like "Please don't cry!" I knew if u started crying, then I was going to start crying. I'm a very empathetic person. Be glad u don't have or know of family members that are drug addicts. Unfortunately, I do. Although, supposedly my cousins that are addicts are now clean. I just hope they stay that way. Thank u for sharing that u worked as a NP. I have 2 1st cousins that are RNs. I studied psychology, but never got my BA. I actually wanted to be what Theo is, a child therapist. Now, I'm not so sure.
