Like I said in another comment, the (bad) fame stuck with Sao Paulo due to the 80s and 90s. Sao Paulo was one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil back then. Many of us grew up or spent a good deal of our lives watching news about violence in Rio and Sao Paulo. It also helps that, due to the fact that its so big and a major economic hub, news related to violence in Sao Paulo are more often broadcasted to the whole country and this feeds the bias even further. But violence has declined sharply since then. The worst places in the country are, by far, in the North and Northeast of Brazil right now (when it comes to big cities). That doesn't mean Sao Paulo is completely safe, and also there are good and bad areas, but considering the country as a whole, São Paulo is a pretty solid place to be. I'm a brazilian and I always feel safe there. Just don't go flashing expensive smartphones around because that turns you into a target in any big city.

Every Brazilian wants to immigrate...until they actually move abroad and realize that Brazil is a paradise. Every single Brazilian that I know who chose to move abroad ended up returning home after a few years. Decades ago, countries in the Northern Hemisphere had a lot to offer and Brazil was considerably less developed than them. Nowadays the difference is not that obvious anymore. Americans, Canadians and Europeans are currently facing huge problems that simply do not exist in Brazil.

São Paulo is the safest capital in Brazil by quite a big margin - the murder rate is around 4.6 for 100k, just about the same as New York. However, there are some neighbourhoods where it's more dangerous than literal warzones. Of course, those places are usually far away from places where people visit and most of the violence is between criminals or between the police and criminals. As a general rule, São Paulo is a safe city for tourists and residents and most people wanting to leave Brazil is mostly because of politics and how unpredictable things like economy really is. Not even downtown and Japantown where you visited is really all that dangerous, it looks seedy but it's just because is old and cluttered.

People will automatically answer that Sao Paulo is very dangerous, even native paulistas, because the fame from the 80s and the 90s got stuck into the collective mind of the nation. Sao Paulo used to be one of the most dangerous cities in Brazil. One of the highest homicide rates. It has dropped sharply in the last 20 years. It is actually one of the safest cities in Brazil right now (relative to population of course, not in absolute numbers). People can say ``no way`` but it`s just statistics. Yes, you can get robbed, but to be honest, I know many people who were robbed in Paris, Madrid, and other european important cities. I was robbed myself in Portugal a while ago when I was visiting (lost my cellphone). Im in no way saying Sao Paulo is less violent than those when it comes to theft. But Sao Paulo is nowhere there the levels of the 80s and 90s. It has improved A LOT. That doesn`t mean Brazil is safe. Many regions are absolutely dangerous. But Sao Paulo is rather safe nowadays in general given it`s size. It`s huge, so there areas that are worse off, of course. Just stay away from the worst areas and you`ll be ok. Don`t flash expensive stuff because that turns you into a target in almost any big city.
@Edgar2023ES2 жыл бұрын
@R.a.f.a.e.l.2 жыл бұрын
