I just had to come and tell you that I did a "recovery" today. A woman was stuck in the ditch on the road to the ski hill. I pulled over in my XJ and asked her if she needed a hand. She didn't have any accessible recovery hooks so we looped the strap around her lower control arm, just like I learned here on this channel. I am pleased to say that we got her out with a gentle tug, and no plastic bumpers were harmed, because we chose an angle to protect them. I felt like all you guys must feel, laying on the ground under a stranger's vehicle, focused on safety, avoiding damage, and just being helpful and getting the job done. I even remembered to have her turn off her traction control! What you do matters, more than you realize. You've inspired me to be a better person, and you've even given me lessons on how to be successful at it. Thank you for that. Happy New Year Matt, and family, and crew... from the mountains of Montana.

Hello from 8000 ft in the Colorado Rockies. The 2 key things with tires in winter driving here is that the rubber remains pliable to very cold temperatures and that they can pick up snow and hold onto it. Nothing grips snow better than snow, that's the value of sipes in tread. If the rubber isn't rated M/S it'll likely get very hard when well below freezing and its like driving with a glass marble on ice, the rubber just wont conform to the terrain to grab anything. Morrvair tires aired down guarantee they grab everything, and we can easily see it picks up gobs of snow and holds onto it. Morrvair does great in the pow. Love the show!
@3xceIIent2 жыл бұрын
Snow sticking to your tires is the exact opposite of what you want. Drive a bald tire and you will learn this very quickly. The sipes move water and snow away from the contact patch. They also provide more biting edges for extra grip.
@BubblesTheCat12 жыл бұрын
Matt? So, who's right here? Must the tires hold snow on it, or is it better if it throws the snow away?
@enderdragoon2 жыл бұрын
@@BubblesTheCat1 it's an interesting difference between snow and mud tires that manufactures try to find a middle ground on. Mud tires prefer to have trapezoidal cuts which helps to throw mud out, so the tires can dig down to traction and put rubber on it. Snow tires will have square cuts to capture power inside them. It's a bit of a winter driving trick to put your tires into the powder often enough to keep some white in there while driving on hard pack. Same reason you can pack a snowball by hand, and igloos can have structure, snow grips snow really well when packed in. If you were driving on black ice and no fresh snow around, only the edges of the tread are doing any work, so you want the water to clear easily between the rubber and the ice.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Ed. I'm 4 1/2 years younger than you and with more metal and plastic in me than I care to think about. On my last commercial air flight I told the guy running the security scanner that I had a lot of metal in me. He just waived me through, but as I was picking my carry-on off the conveyor, he yelled out "man, you twinkle like a Christmas Tree", which made every head in the crowd look up to see who he was talking about. I've had a lot of front-wheel drives that wouldn't go up hills. The majority of the time if you turn it around and go backwards it will crawl right up it (or sometimes with a little more effort. I've had a lot of experience driving uphill backwards in the front wheel drives. They can get squirrely. So unless you're good at driving backwards, you may not want to try it!)

My driveway here in Norway is on a slope and is just glazed right now. Backing up was a no go today. Tried about 10 times. As long the is no ice skate hill, it will back up fine. Even in 7" of wet snow. We do use winter tires here. In fact it is mandatory. I drive a Volvo V40.

I've found that with the strong winters I live in, you either need awd or 4wd no matter what. An overwhelming majority of people run studded tires from October to the end of April and the rest, including myself, have either a jeep or a pickup with KO2s. They seem to be the best all terrain tires for our specific winters and in my personal experience I've gone up and down iced hills on a skidder trail with a loaded snowmobile trailer without any problems so far.

Funny I posted about this myself! I have always had econoboxes and coming from NE New York I have a lot of practice in snow. I drove my 20 year old Prius past a 2WD pickup and to the top of my boss's driveway, then we slid down sideways in his 3500 with bald tires. Skill and tires matter WAY more than the vehicle!
