Do I like my Ford Bronco better than my Jeep Wrangler? That’s one question that I get asked a lot. In this episode of TrailRecon, I’ll share with you all the things that I like and don’t like about my Ford Bronco and what I have in store for the future.
Since getting my Bronco Badlands edition with the Sasquatch package a few months ago, I’ve put a lot of miles on it and really put it to the test. I’ve taken it on a long road trip to Texas, I’ve been on a few overlanding trips to the desert, and I pushed it pretty hard on some difficult off-road trails.
Along the way, I’ve gotten to know this Bronco really well and I share my thoughts and criticisms in this video about the things I think Ford could have done better, including the bumper and soft top, some technical glitches I’ve come across, and some design features that just aren’t working for me. I’ve also discovered some things I really love about the Bronco including the ride comfort, the layout and design of some of the interior features, and the power of the engine.
I’m ready to start making some modifications to my Bronco now that I’ve gotten a feel for its capability in stock form and I'll tell you about the changes that are coming soon to make it even more off-road capable.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with how the Bronco performs even if it does have a few limitations. I came close to not getting it, but I’m so glad I did because I’m enjoying it way more than I thought I would. But...do I love it more than my Jeep?
Come along for the ride with us on this episode and find out!

I love your honesty, you call it as you see it. some get butt hurt when they hear negative things about vehicle they drive. no vehicle is perfect and there's always tradeoffs, most of it depends on how much of off-road vehicle you want vs daily driver. wrangler delivers unmatched off-road ability while sacrificing on road manners, crash and roller safety. best part I like about bronco is that it brings needed competition to wrangler. jeep should build a more refined and safer version of wrangler sell beside current jl.

So in your mind, You want JEEP to build a longer wheel base Wrangler so it's safer on the HIGHWAY? They do it's called the Grand Cherokee. The Wrangler was never designed to be anything but an OFF ROAD vehicle. It cracks me up when people criticize the Wrangler for it's short wheel base. It's like complaining about buying a Z06 and wondering why you only get 18 mph.

Another function of the trail sites, that you don’t like, is to allow you to know the position of the inside of your front wheels. They are there to help guide you around the rocks that damaged your lower control arms. Also there are now gas struts for the rear soft top to assist in raising the rear frame rather than using the prop rod. The struts also assist with raising the entire top from full open to close. Just a couple of ideas that may improve your experience.

Great video, as always. I also have a Badlands Sasquatch, so I’m excited to see what you have in store for the Bronco. Regarding the back, I recommend the IAG EZ-Lift. I added it to my soft top and I now I can open the back with one hand (one latch at a time) and it automatically lifts open (higher than the prop rod would give you). I also added struts to my hood - another great addition that skips the prop rod and adds ease and convenience.

For what it's worth, I installed the DV8 MTO front bumper, a winch, and the DV8 ACC module relocation bracket myself. The ACC has since worked perfectly with shockingly zero issues and no apparent need for recalibration. This particular method relocates the ACC module to a spot on the upper driver's side behind the grille. Also worth mentioning I have no experience doing this kind of stuff, so I'm pretty confident you'd have no trouble whatsoever if you so chose. Going into it I had absolutely had doubts that the ACC relocation would work, but it sure does.

My humble opinion is that when my wife and I are offroad, even on easy trails, you never know what you'll encounter, and we want the most capable vehicle as an insurance policy. I'm so glad I had the patience to wait the extra time for the hard top. Not only does it look substantially better overall, it's quieter inside and it's definitely a better quality overall. Also, soft tops in FL have a very bad habit of fading quickly. Let's also understand that those "grab handles" aren't meant for you to use to get into the vehicle. They're for use when you're on a trail.

The IAG struts for the soft top are a must... I am not too bothered by the soft top and got it to get it sooner too, but I think I would reorder with a hard top just because of the trunk space. I don't even mind the wavy back window, but coming from a van I hated bending down to access the trunk. But those struts made the soft top usable and it will be perfect since summer is coming!!! Highly recommend them to eliminate one issue and it is only a $100 mod.

I have not had the problem with the windshield fluid like you did though… (kinda over-done, but it was comical 😆) for being “basically” a first generation vehicle it seems great to me. I understand you love your Jeep and that is fully warranted, but give ford a few years and maybe this will be a real competition!

We had a 2010 Jeep JKU that we traded for a mid-size SUV when we became parents, but one supposedly off-road CUV (with a CVT nonetheless), then lifted wagon, and now a mid-size pickup later, I’m definitely getting back into solid axles front and rear again within the next 2-3 years. I thought that maybe the 4Runner or new Bronco would be the answer-and as capable as this new Bronco is, it’s back to a Wrangler or Gladiator for me.

The Pilot was actually surprisingly capable off road with A/T tires. The Forester is great as a ski trip car, but anything beyond some of the AWD designated roads that you would find in National or State Parks and it’s out of its element despite what people show on social media.

I ended up getting the BAMF front bumper and love it but I really wasn’t too happy to replace the modular bumper as it’s nice and solid. But I needed a winch.

First thing I did on my bronco: vynil wrap to protect the paint and protective film on all windows (and windshield) to avoid cracks. It has worked great As for the winch: bronco everglades, I assume that solution will be available for purchase in the aftermarket

I’m liking your bronco videos. I myself am waiting on my Bronco Everglades. I know it only comes in a 2.3 liter but I had the 2020 ford Ranger with the 2.3 liter and it did fine out on the trails. I traded it in for my wife’s Bronco sport outer banks because I wanted the bronco outer banks but like I said I changed it to the Everglades addition. I do plan on lifting it and putting 37’s on it.

Great review as always . My big issue, make that huge issue- is the obscene markup on BRONCOS especially when Jeeps can still be bought below MSRP! Anyone who pays $6-10k over msrp on a Bronco is in trouble when they sell it in a few years and are so upside down they´ll need to fork over money to unload it. I bought a GLadiator loaded to the gills for 4% under msrp and maybe in two years may consider a BRONCO if they fix their first year issues and reclaim senses on prices .

Thanks for being honest on Bronco vs Jeep. If I was stuck on a dirt road, I hope a Bronco stops to help. If I was stuck in Moab, I hope a Jeep stops to help.

Those are one time use bolts and yes if you remove them buy replacements first. You are absolutely right about a hang up point, definitely report to ford for a possible engineering change.

Brad, been watching your content for several years and love it. I’ve had a similarly equipped BL with Sasquatch since October and love it. I also have a JK and love that too. I generally agree with your comments but differ on the tailgate. Maybe because I’m 6’ but I love the quick prop up vs my JK and having to unzip and flip it up onto the roof. I find it so much faster. And I think you’ll be happier once you lift it as it’ll be 3” higher. I did the 3” Zone off-road lift on mine with 35” Cooper Discoverer MT’s and find it feels even better off-road now than pre lift. It feels a little more supple and definitely helps with clearance all around. I did the BAMF bumper and Badlands Apex 12k winch. The parking sensors and ACC relo have worked great and the camera isn’t obstructed at all and like you I love that camera so didn’t want to mess with it. I get your point on the ACC relo and do tend to agree but I did it and it’s worked the same so far! I did make a simple wooden deck (covered in matching auto carpet) for the rear so the back is level with the rear seats and it swings right up out of the way so you can get to the stock floor storage. It created space for storage under it where I keep a portable camp table, camp chair, axe, folding shovel, recovery snatch strap and my soft shackles. So that’s actually pretty cool. I’ve slept back there a few nights so far and it’s been great! I installed the ARB dual under the hood and routed an air outlet down into the front bumper and set it on Aux 6. Also have added pod lights so far. Keep up the great content!

Thanks for being a long time follower! I think you're right, lifting it will help for sure, but I'm still worried about how it squishes up the side windows when open and what that will look like 2+ years from now.

@@Malc664 I watch those guys too and did see their soft top (fastback) but I think that’s a whole separate soft top vs just replacement rear side windows? I would just be interested in replacement windows. I actually like the soft top but thanks for pointing it out!

Great Review! I waited for version 2 for those reasons but now I'm even waiting for the hybrid model instead. I've owned a jeep CJ. a couple of Cherokee's and 2x Montero's but now I'm ready for my first Ford even thought I've said in the past that I'd never buy/support Ford.

Maybe you could go with a receiver hitch style winch, that way you could store it away when on the highway. It's nice to be able to move it to the back if you drive off into something forward and need to pull it out backwards. Thanks for the review. I had a job restoring the 66 to 77 broncos. They still drove terribly on the highway. Glad that's improved.
