I didn't want Lyney, but the haters changed my mind... was he worth it? Genshin character review!

I was very happy when Lyney was released, because I did not want to pull for him.
It’s honestly pretty great when Hoyo releases a character I’m not interested in. More time to save up for future characters, fewer resources needed, not to mention no need to farm more artifacts…
While I didn’t dislike Lyney, he didn’t appeal to me either. And the last thing I needed was another pyro DPS. So why on earth did I pull for him in the end? And did I regret that decision?

On topic of Lyney's "garter belt", I am unfamiliar with the english terminology in this area but looking up "punk garter" revealed a lot of pictures of what looks quite like what he wears and these things often are just leather straps with no clips or any other means to hold onto anything. So I assume even Lyney's straps are meant to be just decorative.

Btw! You can press the skill button during his burst to end his burst early. This is useful mainly because his burst can only hit an enemy once.

The whole "waifu" thing is weird enough at the best of times, but when people react like that it's SO beyond weird. Even worse is the whole thing about that new gacha which announced they would not have male playable characters at all.... just wtf. It's perfectly valid to get attached to characters, but some of it is several levels too far 😅

True, I’m a bit sad that Azur Promilia won’t have any male characters. There were leaks about one and players went absolutely crazy by review bombing the game until the devs clarified that there will only be females 🥲 Now they’re mad that an npc in the game (a smith) is male and has a lot of muscles xD Those people really are never satisfied… it’s mostly the eastern audience like Korea and China tho. Oh and one of the first popular games from Hoyoverse, Honkai Impact 3rd, also only has female playable characters. They asked in a survey if they should add male playable characters and the Chinese players were FURIOUS about it xD In the end Hoyo apologised for even asking them…

It’s very sad that it’ll probably never have any male characters tho 😕 I’m so happy that Genshin didn’t go that route! I also only heard about the „male character“ drama in Honkai Impact 3rd recently, it’s so insane 😭 That they only have female characters surprised me a lot when I heard about it a few months ago. I find it to be "tear my hair out" frustrating because there seems to be only two side of this section of male players, who always haven a problem with characters as the devs create them. One half doesn't want female playable characters because "I'm a man, I wanna self insert, playing as a woman is gay" while the other half doesn't want male characters because "I'm a man, I don't want to stare at a guys ass as I play all day, that would be gay." Its just two sides of the same homophobia coin.

I find lyney to be such an outlier in my interest in genshin characters- was initially not interested in him at all design and lore-wise when fontaine first started out and his banner released. Then freminet came along and i fell in deep adoration with him. In a roundabout way, liking freminet inevitably got me interested in the twins since the trio are so closely linked. Wanting freminet cons on the current banners of arlecchino/lyney i was confronted with the choice of who i would mind less to end up with if i hit pity (also known as rock bottom for my funds). And even though arlecchino seemed like a no-brainer just a week ago,,, i ended up pulling on lyney's banner. Something in my head just clicked - the sibling's dynamics, the way lyney hides so much of his fear and doubt behind a mask of bravado and magic tricks, the hearth as their home challenging their sense of loyalty etc etc- it had to be him! Charged attack bow user be damned, i'm going to take him along on my journey. I think the moment lyney first broke his streak of indifference with me was during the meropide quest line. As much as i love and main wriothesley, in their confrontation i found myself firmly on lyney's side, because wriothesley took the whole thing too far. Lyney's composure finally cracking was the moment i saw potential in liking him

@@bloddrinkeraka hm, purposefully letting lyney think that his siblings are in danger at wriothesley's hand just by withholding information on the situation and letting the boy work himself up into a panic over it isn't quite "doing nothing wrong" i think. Everything was already playing out like wriothesley wanted it to, so he could have spared lyney the mental damage all of that caused. I get that it was probably also meant to show lyney that he was biting off way more than he could chew, but still. Wriothesley could have just come out with the information on how things were actually going and proven that he had perfect control over the situation all along 🤷‍♀️

The moment i heard that Hoyo would be releasing a pyro dps magician, i was like, “F*CK WHATEVER HIS PLAYSTYLE IS, I NEED THAT.” He came down lightning fast and to this day, is my favourite Genshin character.

As my first pyro dps, Lyney never disappointed me. I do not have a shielder so at first I was really worried after hearing so much warning about him but at the end that issue added a lot of dynamism to his already so strong and so visually captivating gameplay. My only issue is that Lynette isnt his best anemo teammate, they are my fav duo in genshin😔 The fact that I got his weapon in a simple 10pull also helped him to become a favorite for me 😂

My luck on Lyney’s weapon was terrible! I lost my 50/50 twice on it and drained almost half of the 218 pulls I saved for him😔

Irt the garter- he had a proper one in his concept art, but it got changed when it came time for modeling and release. My assumption is that this was partly due to Hoyo already having received some flak from the CCP for Venti and Gorou- and they wanted plausible deniability in Lyney's design so they could claim it wasn't *really* a garter belt. That and, they may have anticipated a negative response from the incel players and tried to quell it by doing that. As a character though he's great! The biggest numbers I've ever seen in game were all on my Lyney team, while some of my other teams may technically deal similar or greater damage-- they tend to do so with more attacks, so he holds the funny number crown.

The irony of Koreans being mad at a femboy design doesn't escape me. That said my fav Leney team is the overload team with Chevy, Xianglin and Yae. Especially on single boss enemies. It frees up bennet for my other teams like national and Xiangyun plunge

Lyney was the first character I wanted just because (also i was curious for the charged attack playstyle as i didn’t have anyone else like that), and I don’t regret it. While I never use him in abyss, and mono element isn’t generally my favourite because of certain immune enemies, I love to use him in the overworld. Sigh one day I will get C4 yanfei for him, but Zhongli is a good companion. This makes me wish we had more pyro supports.

I'm hoping will get a dedicated pyro shield (like layla) at some point - c4 yanfei is really great but the shield is a still a little too weak and short lasting for his type of playstyle to be *truly* comfortable. He would be fun in co-op but of course requires that your team mates are willing o bring a mono pyro team with you 😅

I've adored Lyney and his playstyle ever since Fontaine began. I wish Abyss was a little friendlier towards him since it really discourages you from running mono-teams but that's not going to stop me from slowly working towards getting him to C6 as an F2P

I still do it on my main account because I find it fun, even though it takes me up to like an hour when I'm trying to figure out the right teams for a new abyss (though it takes like 15 minutes for subsequent runs if I use the same teams). If it wasn't fun then I sure as heck wouldn't do it for less than a third of a wish!

My one disappointment with Lyney is that he wasn't a two-in-one unit with Lynette. I sort of expected double units to be Fontaine's gimmick, but they went with the less interesting pneuma/ousia thing instead. And just to add insult to injury, they don't even work particularly well together.

Been looking forward to this. Smart to release a video while folks are waiting for maintenance to complete. I got Lyney for a bad reason, but it turned out super well. I tried to get Aqua Simulacra but got his bow instead. Out of pity for wasting a signature weapon, I got Lyney and was pleasantly surprised by how heckin strong he was, and fun to play! His high single-target damage helped me (skill issue player) clear the abyss many times recently (all of those cycles with 3 bosses on the same side) "slutty magician police" 😂

Yay! Always happy to another character review from you! 😃 I never knew this backlash against poor Lyney! But he was always Luke-warm to me since the archon quest. Although he is gentle to the traveller and friendly, I can never get over the fact that this was his mask.... the voice actors and animators did a great job to protray that sense of unease with this character. And like you, character likeability is important for me when deciding to pull. Your video strengthened my choice to skip this round. 😊

It was not his “mask” thou? The most important thing to Lyney is his family and he already made it clear that he ald think of the traveler as one. He also share the side he would not share to anyone else to the traveler like his weak side and his insecurities. He might wear a mask at first but not anymore~

My 'I wasn't interested until haters made me angry' character was Kokomi. She was cute, but I wasn't really interested until all the 'no crit trash' bashing started. I pulled her, built her and she performed wonderfully from the start. Now most people know that Kokomi is a good character, of course. For me Lyney was a must pull during his first banner because his exploration passive just makes finding all those Fontaine specialties so much easier. I am not a fan of his costume, but it is a costume meant for the stage. I hope we get alternative, more normal clothes for him some day. I would consider buying them. I will but my 'baby' f2p account's wishes on Lyney, but it would take a miracle to get him. Always worth trying.

Mine were Yae and Yelan. Yae was touted as a skip by theory crafters and Yelan a Xingque side grade and I got them anyway because they were fun (I went for c2 Yelan too boot). After Sumeru came out people were itching for both of their reruns, regretting they skipped.

I don’t like having un-built characters on my roster either, so I doubt I’ll ever get to Lyney even though I got his bow from that weapon banner with two bows (currently used for hilarious but impractical damage from Collei’s charged shots). I’m not pulling a pyro on field DPS until Yanfei (Abyss 11 capable) and Diluc (not built at all) are built for Abyss 12 on my account.

I'm that one rare man who mains Lyney. I wasn't interested in him, but he was so great in the Archon Quest and I grew fond of his design. Also really fantastic animations. I didn't have a Pyro DPS nor Ganyu and I find myself really enjoying him.

Appreciate to hear you sticking up for the underdog. I pulled him despite not liking his design because I thought he was an interesting character. That and I love myself a fancy top hat. Sadly he is the first character that I pulled since Childe in 1.1 that I actually regret. I find his play style so boring I haven’t touched him since the patch he released in. The poor guy doesn’t even had any artefacts since Navias release. Hope lots of people have fun with him even though he’s not for me.

It took me some time to come around to the charge shot gameplay, but when Genshin first came out he was the one I was most excited for. On this rerun he's finally been C6'd R1'd and I'll never regret saving for it lol

Great video, loved seeing your description of him, I imagine he will become more flexible with Natlan as the archon and hopefully other pyro supports will come out but yeah his restriction to Bennett makes me bench him quite often as it is quite hard to get stacks with only him and managing to get all of it done in such a short period of time is sometimes frustrating, but I like his playstyle and definitely will revisit him once more options become available. I hoped Father would've made a cool support for him, but now that time has passed

I don't intend to sound mean, but to be frank, the fact that for some Eastern countries it's totally acceptable to cry and throw tantrums that a game releases male characters and not make their whole roster female exclusive is disgusting. Not to mention that in this particular case, they got angry that Liney "showed some skin" but Ganyu, Shenhe, Rosaria's previous bust size, etc. those are more than fine, right? 🙄🤢

Funny I'm actually the opposite at first I thought it was garter belt too and was confused on why it's not connected (it's not just ingame model, some official arts too). I talked to a friend about it, he shared that maybe because it's not meant to keep the socks but the whole outfit then someone mentioned it to be crinoline and it just hit me on that possibility. I don't think it's crinoline but genshin do make odd references like that on designs. Now I enjoy it to be loose.

He used to hv team type restrictions but now he has several more option which is on par if not better than his usual monopyro - Lyney furina vape is one of his strongest team - lyney overload with chevreuse is close to monopyro - lyney double geo I even saw lyney melt with rosaria and burning Ppl tend to believes that his team comp is restricted to monopyro but that’s ald old new. Now he have alot more option to choose from compare to b4 ❤

i have a garter belt similar to his, they're just for the aesthetic and not meant to hold up stockings. i get what you mean though it would make more sense for him to wear a traditional garter belt since he is wearing stockings and it's not realistic for them to be perfectly in place and stop right where the garter begins

@@saurusness if they're adjustable you can choose how tight/loose you want them, since lyney's are attached to his shorts they can't fall off. and maybe because his shorts are also kinda loose it just looks better that way cause if he made the garters tighter his shorts would be readjusted in a weird way, like the fabric would kinda flow out from the sides i guess? or he just doesn't like the feeling of them being tight around his skin which is understandable, idk lol

I eventually want Lyney and now I also want Chiori just because of how male players have reacted to them. I'm on a full sprint forward for mostly the tall women units myself, but as long as the servers don't shut down any years soon, I'm definitely going to get Lyney some day. I think his look/design is really charming and my favorite weapon is the bow. And I like his character. It sucks that I don't want to spend money so I can't pull for him this time again. 😔

To be honest, I pulled Lyney early in 4.0 before going to Fontaine and enjoy his gameplay a great deal. But I eventually grew to dislike him as a character for his part in the Fontaine story. Nevertheless, I find him a pretty cool character. I've actually used him in abyss a lot it turns out looking back. He was actually quite useful during the hydro tulpa era.

Just one thing, Marechaussee Hunter is actually not his best set because the crit rate buff does not snapshot to his charged attack consistently since his hp drain and increase is through his charged attack only and skill. He has big dmg through his burst and skill as well. It’s much more resin efficient to get better stats with 2pc ATK%/PyroDMG 2pc ATK%. So then you don’t have to start with the restriction of having to charge attack 2 times before bursting for the crit rate. More freedom and quick swap flexibility with the 2pc. Many of the speed-runners and hardcore Lyney mains suggest the 2pc.

I almost went for Lyney because of the backlash. End up not doing cause I'm not a big fan of his archetype, since we have little to no option for pyro support and Xiangling is too cluncky for my liking (needs a lot of ER to make her good and too many characters want Emblem)

strangely enough i've had the opposite experience with lyney. i like his design and was debating on pulling for him, but i was really caught off guard by how much he overshadowed lynette in the story quest. lynette is one of my favorite characters, and the amount of times everyone in the story just forgets lynette exists put a sour taste in my mouth. it felt like the writers forgot she was supposed to have just as major of a role as lyney in the magic show, and therefore dually on trial for murder!! :(

But it does match her character. From the very beginning she was said to be a quiet character that mostly observes from the background, I love her as well, but Lyney was meant to be the center of the stage and she was his assistant.

I also don't like Lyney's look, but the reason is his backless outfit and sleeves. There are a lot of women in the GI who also wear backless outfits, but they all have stylish shawls to maintain their decency. In comparison, Lyney's shawl is only half. His sleeves are too puffy, which not only tends to interfere with the magic show, but also attracts the audience to suspect that there is a hidden mechanism in it.

Because Genshin's characters are limited in models used and texture is just placed on top of them, the garter ended up looking loose, so it has that pixel wide gap like Venti's puffy shorts. You'll always find something slightly off on every model cause the devs are trying to avoid clipping.

I think those groups were more frustrated that they'd been fed scraps for almost a year by the time Lyney came out. Sumeru was very much focused on male characters and the highly anticipated Dehya was ruined and dumped on the standard banner. That frustration slowly built, until it erupted in Fontaine when it became clear the course wouldn't change anytime soon. All of this could have easily been prevented. HYV just needs to plan their characters and banners better so everyone has something to look forward to. They still struggle with this. Even now they don't know how to release a male character who isn't an on-field DPS.

Yeah that's a charitable way to put it - and 100% agree that in an ideal world they'd balance it a lot better. Some of the problems people have would be SO easy to fix!

Maybe so, but being dissatisfied can't make you homophobic. Neuvillette and Wriothesley didn't face nearly as much hate, even though they were continuing the pattern you pointed out, because they're more traditionally "masculine" characters.

The hate toward Lyney is nothing to do with queerphobia, it's 100% sexism. 'what do you mean women play this game and so would want male characters who are attractive? BOO I ONLY WANT WOMEN'. This is especially true because the main complainers were Koreans. The gender war in SoKo is insane right now. There was a similar issue that came up with a SK based gacha when the male unit in the summer wore a collar and showed off some skin while the female unit wore a diving suit. SK feminists make the angriest tumblr user seem reasonable, and this has made the angry otaku dudes even more extreme in response.

I've seen mixed reports of it tbh, kinda a bit of both I guess? There's definitely a lot of overlap between the two. Can't imagine how devs feel when that's a large part of their target market honestly...

Yeah no there were a lot of awful comments about him looking like a woman, his design being "fixed" if he was a woman, general hatred of queer men and also slurs being thrown around? Sexism and queerphobia are absolutely connected cause they can often stem from a hatred of femininity

If this was just about denying women a male character, then why don't we get this kind of backlash when a traditionally masculine character releases? Is there a tiny group that wants no male characters at all? Probably. But this is mainly about Lyneys looks and wardrobe.

@@Yama_1291 There's two reasons for this. First, a traditionally masculine character like Itto is 'cool'. Boys like them. A pretty boy like Lyney doesn't have any inherent appeal for men, so they must be for girls. This enrages many male otaku because games aren't allowed to cater to anyone but them Second, SK gender politics are insane right now. the SK feminists are incredibly extreme and advocate for the enslavement or eradication of men and not just in their angry venting blog. Like in 'actually secretly blackmailing political figures' way. So having a male character dressed up in a feminine manner is perceived as emasculating him, which indicates that Genshin hates men and wants to enslave them. Same as with the unit who wore a collar in the SK game.

And I was not a Liney hater and I even found him cool and wanted to pull for him but didn't have luck, but you really crossed a line that I don't think is right at all. Yup, the homophobia surrounding Lyney during his release was shocking. Thousands of comments saying he appeared too "gay" etc, and mass disliking the video because he didn't fit their standard of "man". And yes, the majority of them were indeed Incels.

I don't think it's "toxic" to take a stand against bigotry and hatred, especially because there's nothing wrong with Lyney's design comparative to the rest of the Genshin cast - male or female. You're free to like or dislike Lyney but the hatred against him from Korean gamers, does seem rooted in misogyny, homophobia, or both so I sincerely hope you're not implying that something like that is okay.

No, as I said people are completely free to dislike a character or their design for *any* reason, including finding them unappealing. It's ok to not be interested in "feminine looking men" for example. It's when people get angry that such a character would be released and call for nation wide boycotts, that I really can't see any other reason than bigotry.
