2 WAS the last in the timeline for a while, but they retconned it to be between the Anime and 4, the new implication being that Dante was just depressed over killing Vergil in 1 and got excited again when he learned about Nero.
@davebob49737 ай бұрын
Thats weirdly wholesome and funny also i didnt even know there was an anime
@goldglovegrappler13827 ай бұрын
@davebob4973 It's not the most wholesome given Dante still does the woohoo stuff mostly so he doesn't bum people out but it is nice that he got pulled out of a total slump. Also the anime is pretty good, right after 1 and depicts him taking more normal Devil Hunter jobs to pay the bills.
@benjad927 ай бұрын
@@davebob4973the DMC anime is canon actually but the hilarious part is Capcom gave more credits to the anime than DMC 2 😂

Small correction to the correction: It was with the release of DMC5 that the timeline got switched. Initially, the timeline implied that Dante got depressed in the anime, after killing his brother, only to be super excited again in 4, only to again be super depressed in DMC2.

Ugh dmc fans grinding their combos instead of lore again. 2 takes place right after a novel where in the end he has to kill a trish lookalike and is wounded by that
@JohnXuandou7 ай бұрын
For the record, DMC2 used to be the last point in the DMC timeline, but with the release of DMC5 the timeline has been retconned so that DMC2 comes before DMC4 and the anime to be Dante's depressive episode after DMC1 with the death of his brother making it so Dante has no one left leaving him in a very emotionally unstable place, which makes the beginning of DMC4 really interesting because Dante starts off like a stone faced killer until he starts to realize who Nero is and slowly becomes more jokey and fun loving like younger Dante.
@Lugnal5 ай бұрын
I feel like that doesn't quite work because it makes DMC 2 Dante's personality interfere with the then-logical leap from Anime Dante to DMC4 Dante. Honestly, DMC2 is an inconvenient nuisance on almost all fronts. I say almost because I kinda like Lucia😂

@Comkill11723 күн бұрын
2’a weird because originally it was before 4 (hence why Dante starts the game silent and menacing like 2), then after DmC it was retconned to be after 4, then when 5 was announced they put it back before 4. It’s very strange and I don’t get why they bothered changing it in the first place other than wanting to pretend it’s a more solid ending point so DmC could be a thing.

Enjoyed the video! I played through the DMC franchise from beginning to end for the first time this year. Still obsessed with 3 at the moment, savoring DMD mode as I slowly chip through it. I felt absolutely underprepared for just how much I wound up disliking 2, for all the reasons you've already heard and readily acknowledge here. Very nice to hear someone say "yeah you're not wrong about what this game is, but listen: it's cool anyways lmao." Gotta respectfully disagree on Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage though, and the sentiment of "repetitive arcade action" as a whole. The strength of arcade action is that it absolutely can serve as mindless explode-y, button mash-y, goof-y, sill-y, but can also be incredibly nuanced and expressive if you spend more time with it. The kind of niche advanced strategies in those games, animation cancels and abuse and all that, is exactly the kind of stuff that inspired DMC3, I'd argue. It's just that DMC3 actively demands you engage with that kind of stuff, whereas arcade beat 'em ups were more than happy to just let you keep spending quarters instead. They're very different games depending on who's playing them, which in and of itself is very cool!
@xanious37597 ай бұрын

Felt the same about how he said that Gungrave is just mashing square, ignoring the dodging, when to do the gunkata and when not to, the special shots, the melee that can reflect rockets, having to move through the stage in a way that keeps your combo up...

I'm convinced the definitive DMC2 experience is the Lucia disc. It just feels like Dante was shoved to the forefront of the game late in development. As everyone who has ever played the game has demonstrated, his shit is just busted, his bosses are ???, it beggars belief that this was what they really set out to make. I think they were scrambling to scrape something together for a Dante campaign. Maybe he was intended as a bonus character, like Vergil in later games, something fun to unlock because who cares, but had to make it for real at the eleventh hour. I get the impression Capcom viewed the DMC franchise as an action equivalent to Resident Evil with a rotating cast of protagonists, and this was supposed to be Lucia's game. That bears out if you play both campaigns side by side. Most of the content is shared across both discs, but it all feels better with Lucia - I distinctly remember a lightbulb going off when I tried it for the first time - with Lucia, it actually felt like the enemies complemented her moveset. Her kick combo staggers enemies, breaking their guard and opening them up to the higher damage sword combos. It's not just musou anymore. Unfortunately, players' universal hatred of Dante's disc meant that the vast majority never even put Lucia's disc in their console and so there are probably like a dozen people who even gave it a chance.
@Zomboii997 ай бұрын
Interesting take!!
@TransWitchReviews7 ай бұрын
Yeah this is pretty much how I felt. Like I still don't really like DMC2 but it really does feel like Lucia's game in a lot of ways and it's super built around her moveset and it makes the game more engaging at least.

5:55 You may be the only other person on earth that I know of who pointed out this very specific aesthetic of this very specific moment in time

I defo prefer DMC3 over 2, I still have to admit that the tower in 3 is not a very interesting environment to explore. The whole aesthetic of DMC2 (especially early game) I always thought looked nice, even though I never thought to replay it.

Well, some people were making a mod to "improve" the combat, so if they finish then you can enjoy both the combat and the exploration.

This is why I keep coming back to Thor's videos. Unique takes I can't get anywhere else.

This video inspired me to pick up DMC2 for the first time, and honestly I had a good time. The Gungrave comparison is apt, as while the two aren't exactly the pinnacle of skill-based action games, they're both still really fun to just smash face through. Also, brooding Dark Knight Dante is the best and no one can convince me otherwise.

Oh man I know you did a little video on Drakengard 3 years ago but a full one now would be wonderful. I love that game.

Can’t lie this brought back pure nostalgia with this game. This was how I got introduced to the series. Then I went back played one & was hyped about 3 when it came along. I start seeing a lot of hate for this game in later years didn’t see why until I see past footage of stuff I didn’t pay attention to back then 😅 this game I still hold bear & dear bc it got me into the genre with the GOW & more of the PS2 era

One thing the game really needed was letting you shoot while just holding the button down. It also needed a big overhaul, but speaking of the game as it is, and not as it may be, it really needed to let you just hold down the button and shoot.

The anime intro with Pikachu is a masterpiece. And DMC2 was my introduction to the series and I always loved it.
