@@redscope897 Valrak hasn't leaked anything. He's responded on leaks others have made. He does highlight rumors that he believes are true, and has had quite the track record over the last few years. Companies who cut ties with content creators just because they are being honest and using constructive criticism shouldn't be stealth blacklisted by eg GQ. They should take on feedback both good and bad and use it to make the best products they can.

There's probably more people than the two mentioned but those two may well have acted on their own believing they had more support within the company that was the case. Yea but publicity is a huge part of GW atm, they’ve spent a lot of time and money to achieve the image they have, so having a situation where the company wasn’t able to function or communicate effectively get out in the public is a huge boo boo and shows a lack of competence of the board, and the boardroom execs will do anything to remain there. Old GW lore nerd here: the company (particularly the Black Library side) has been notoriously bad when it comes to QC editorial controls (typos, spelling errors, lore contradictions, you name it) for the last couple decades. An intern going rogue and slipping stuff in the codex that no one except the actual customers notice lore-wise is very, very plausible. As for the CEO being 'big mad' but not make a statement about it... 2-parts saving face, 1-part hoping that not addressing the issue will make it go away, especially since they're trying to get the 40k tv show deal with Amazon worked out.

I’m not saying it’s directly connected, but this rumor reminds me of something Rob (The Honest Wargamer) has mentioned once or twice on the Juggz podcast - he’s alluded to (seemingly at least half serious) that the main lore narratives of the Necromunda campaign books essentially criticize GW management and senior leadership, and so so blatantly, but that the author(s) get away with it because clearly nobody’s bothering to read the lore (amongst said leadership and management). If that’s true, I could possibly see an editor tossing in a lore grenade like women Custodes to prove a point. Or I could see someone hearing Rob’s comments and twisting that into a conspiracy theory that this is another thing that sneaky staff are getting past a GW management that fans assume doesn’t care about the lore.

I think there’s a distinct difference between lore than can be interpreted as criticism of the GW higher ups while remaining true to the source material, and the blatent “modernisation” attempt that was female custodies. One is made for the game and lore, the other is made for the person who wrote it; and no one else.

My point is this: Rob has voiced what’s essentially a conspiracy theory: GW management doesn’t read the lore, and a Necromunda writer has been demonstrating that by producing a narrative embarrassing to GW that’s been put into print because the powers that be aren’t checking the lore before it goes to print. What’s the allegation here? That an editor slipped in a gender change to troll fans and got away with it because the powers that be aren’t reviewing the lore before it goes to print. lore grenades... cool term, but sadly so indicative of the times... I'm not a true 40K fan. I read some of the earlier HH (basically a scam considering they're still milking it afaik) and I used to collect some Fantasy and 40K miniatures back in the day (like twenty years ago) but even I can see that female custodes are ridiculous and not needed. Politics aside, this was just unnecessary. There's already two massively respected factions in 40K that exclusively feature women. Also the IG/IA also has literally BILLIONS of female characters. This is so lazy or whatever it is. The Cavill Series seems doomed, even if it gets off the tarmac. I've seen some good 40K official animation, but it is paywalled in the worst way... 40K streaming lmao. They're already dealing with Prime, they should just produce in house and then dump it on Prime. They would get them so much more exposure. Anyhow with the success of Fallout's show, the inevitable march to a 40K show begins and you betcha it will be "modernized." Grimdark is a guilty pleasure of mine even if it is a little angsty at times. There's still so much potential with this universe after all this time. I literally just want to see some either animation or live action of Magnus the Red busting into the Throne Room in an explosion before I die, or Slaaneshi Knights, or any number of high level HH engagements, or Vulkan just murderizing people. The visuals alone are so great, and I really appreciate the psychological/existential/philosophical implications of manifestation and parallel dimensions. 40K lore was already rigged from the start though, and beyond the literal grim future of the franchise, it was always plagued with the lack of even potential for a happy ending or just a conclusion of any kind. It can be overwhelming to the point of turnoff and this current trajectory will probably only worsen my outlook on 40K. I wish we could go back to the 2000s when the lore was soooo damn fresh. Stuff has just gotten a bit played out even before this woke spearhead on Warhammer. I think the Primaris debacle also cheapened the tabletop so much... It was so poorly handled, just like this situation. Ew, GW sucks so much now. Not only are they fleecing their fans for generations lmao... now they are also spitting in their hardcore fanbase's faces... and with 40K the whole fanbase is pretty hardcore. Seems like a Heavy Flamer situation, brothers and sisters...

As a former GW MO troll and retail muppet I can confirm that absolutely everything HMBohemond is absolutely and unequivable false. I've been out of GW a while now but I've seen quite close up how the company operates and I could spend ages debunking all that hes posted, but needless to say that any response on Social Media has to be approved, there are no interns, GW has a paid social media manager and a senior management team that sets out the policies for it. GW tightly controls its social media output, just look at how they operate the painting teams. Any editorial changes made to a codex/army book in the studio have to be approved by multiple parties before its allowed in. Side note: one of my major pains with GW is that the Studio and White Dwarf teams are not allowed to communicate or share information. Its why you see so many mistakes regarding things like Chapter Lineage. Bohemond seems to make this nonsense up to suit whatever narrative hes pushing and will change his tune to suit that narrative. I do not trust him or value any claim he makes. I'm not going to post any personal info to confirm my history with GW (other than to say Jervis Johnston once swore at me in the old Fanatic office).

I gotta agree with you here @swordnsteele712 The feeling I am getting from all of this is that Games Workshop decided to be woke, I don't think it was one troll editor, or one rogue intern... I think they tried to be work, when there was a backlash they figured they would go "all in" with their tweet in support of their decision and their lie saying it has always been that way and - it just backfired horribly. There were so many ways to make the female custodes work like implementing new sisters of silence lore. But to contradict it completely? Blades of khaine are a cool example of this. Bad@ss ninja women who are one of my fav AoS factions could easily fit as a faction in 40k. Would be cool to see a full women chaos faction or something like that. Yeah, as much as I would like to believe this, it’s not like GW hasn’t shown its “DEI” hand before. We all remember during the “summer of love” in 2020 when GW essentially disowned its own self-created lore and accused it and any of us who appreciated it of being “horrible fascists”. I do believe that GW, or at least a subset of their staff, tried to sneak in Femstodes assuming that few of us would notice a little callout in the Codex but after the reaction was so swift and severe, they realized they messed up. Whether or not they learned anything from this, time will tell. For now, they seem to be trying to distance themselves from the situation as much as they can by pretending it never happened.

an Edito may not be well versed in the lore or content that it is in the material at hand, an editor is a tecnician in lenguage AND in making the material readable. it means that, to a given extent, he has just to make sure the verbs are properly cinjugated, the sentences are properly structured and the punctuation is in order and paragraph and structure is used to draw attention to any iven passages in the writings that need attention. this is, more or less, the rule of thumb. then there are proof reader that check not only that the editor did everything in his purview properly but reconcile it with lore, history, bonduaries of what can (and can not) be published. there are also translator on two layer that does the same: first layer properly translate, second layer make it fly... as an Italian and former sales manager of a pubblisher (sales means long tedious presentation to distributors...) I have been subject to the shortfall of this process many time... Tom Clancy's book are wonderfuly translated, untill (and it happen very often) the author used some miliatry slang, at that point, the translator and editors fell short in their job and the proofreaded had no military knowledge, so the book is not as well written as it is in native english... so now we need to decide: either GW/BL is not properly staffed and they don't have the manpower to do their job properly OR they are pushing a message that may or may not be acceptable to their customer base AND they are not doing it to improve the lore but for pure political reason. Now, just go look at what they have done in other stuff, opening themselves to leagl action (serious ones). To make a long story short: GW lost an amazing opportunity to do the right thing, shame on them.

GW still hasn't fixed it. GW could have added a Noble house like House Escher and stated that since the males of that house are not fit to be Custodes. With every Noble House on Terra has to submit young males to Legio Custodes but since this Noble House's males are not suitable they send young females instead so the House does not loose any shame. The the more I think about this the more ridiculous it is. Thing is, even if this rumor was the absolute truth, what has GW done about it to fix it publicly? Nothing. Therefore its irrelevant because ultimately, it still falls on GW to correct the mistakes of the their employees and make sure the public knows the truth.

So, as a primarily AoS fan, I find this whole tweet sus. While it's not as popular as 40k, AoS *is* the most popular Fantasy Table Top game out there right now. The Old World is doing well, but the money maker is still AoS on the fantasy side. DEI hasn't really affected AoS as there was already precautions in place for this. They don't have specific gender factions (Besides Orruks and Khaine girls (Fyreslayers used to be men only too, but recent lore developments have made it so they need female's on the front line)), and skin color doesn't seem to matter that much to them. Not just that, all of Gamesworkshop defended this decision, so much that they told the community to suck it up or move on. This whole tweet is a lie

I mean there are people who are like actual wizards with the amount of knowledge they have of the lore going back with decades worth of lore having been written. Companies need a fall guy when they are looking their customers, i think what a lot of these people are learning is its not hard to boycott them, you don't neeeeeeeeeeeeed their stuff to get good Warhammer stuff and its a hobby so its easy enough to put it aside for a while as well. I don't even play Warhammer but i'm really sorry to hear all this is going on with it, it was a lot less susceptible to it then the fandoms that were ruined for me by companies virtue signaling

I can totally believe this story. You would be surprised how many people get hired at jobs who give zero shits about the job at hand. This is especially true for writing jobs. It's become a gig economy for that sort of work. I know a person who works as a freelance writer and she gets a lot of work from very big companies to edit things like this. She's just there to check for grammar but can do whatever she pleases. Thankfully, she behaves but she's had to clean up stuff like this before. Yes, companies hire freelancers to clean up the messes of freelancers. As far as the intern and twitter, you would be surprised how many big companies give zero effs about X/Twitter. Often times it's a gig for someone who knows someone. Social media managers who actually triple check and go through the proper channels are still oddly very rare.

It’s part of the cycle of popularity GWs experiencing I think, they want to be more popular and more mainstream, so will be fine with ebbing away at the foundations of their own brand to get more instant money and grow the alleged fandom. It happens with every franchise/trend/company that finds popularity, people come in who do t care about the brand and push the idea of growth and making more money, only to push out the original fanbase for a more casual audience. It would work, but the causal audience will see the prices of GW models and be instantly turned off by it and walk away, becuase games workshop want to have it both ways, they want to be mega popular but be able to see high priced luxury items, you can’t have both.

I think it was done for gain and inclusion and doesn't care about it's properties as long as they can sell books to appease shareholders. I hate they are trying to censure you. KNOWS... that the 40k fanbase absolutely reads the lore and knows it (probably better than many at GW)! I've been with 40k since it's beginning and while I don't know it all, I do know a lot. Also, to say that AoS is unpopular is opinion and implies that unpopularity is universal. I've seen no evidence to support AoS as unpopular; it is certainly less popular than 40k. What was unpopular was the dramatic drop of the Old World setting and sudden, unceremonious shift to AoS. I did not like that at first, but I've grown to embrace AoS more (particularly Warcry!). Does AoS have some Woke BS? Yes, but not so much as to imply the entire setting is unpopular (full disclosure: I did decide not to buy the AoS RPG rules based on it's use of preferred pronouns. It just rubbed me the wrong way), so it may be wavering because of attempts to mainstream DEI stuff, but who knows. What I can say is that my visit to Warhammer World this last April showed me that there were several employees that were "all in" on embracing DEI and preferred pronouns and such. I'll grant you that this is anecdotal on my part, but the impression it left on me was undeniable and when the Custodes controversy happened, I was not at all surprised. It appears we are returning to the GW of the dark times. Naomi, I'm sorry if GW is retaliating against you for such a petty thing as your review. I'd send you some free stuff if I had any to make up for it. Stay strong and follow your principals. We appreciate it!

Being a fan of GW products, seeing them make record profits, then seeing them continue to hike their prices on their already expensive products, using FOMO, taking down Astartes, making a subscription service, no games in stores... No good thing their passionate fans do for them goes unpunished. It's like being in an abusive relationship. At least their sculpts are good I guess. Naomi, it sucks to see that they pulled the rug on you and no doubt your channel has taken a hit, but the fact that you spoke your mind is commendable and honorable and I think in the long run it will work out. Personally I have taken a break from buying anything GW, they have no honor, they have no respect for their fans, I have no respect for them, and I have enough pile of shame to keep me occupied for years anyway.

Hey Naomi, I've heard of some other content creators getting dropped from the program, and when they chased it down their GW contact claimed GW were no longer providing previews to content creators associated with retail stores. So I suspect that's what's after happening with you, as it looks like you were still receiving previews up till recently while the Custodes thing was a good while back. It's really shitty that they've ghosted you over it, but not really surprising from GW. In relation to the Custodes thing, I'm delighted we got that short story with a female Custodes. I'm an old player who started with the original Rogue Trader, so I've seen many retcons and lore updates throughout the years. As Aaron Dembski-Bowden pointed out, when they were researching it for the Horus Heresy book series there wasn't anything that said there couldn't be female Custodes apart from the IP manager and the product team who had male Custodes to sell. If some Fem Custodes give some fans a place to see themselves in the setting then that's a win and doesn't make any difference to my own enjoyment. Mostly I'm disappointed we can't get models like the art in Rogue Trader! Losing out on the leather chaps and bare chests was the real crime.
