OMG HE SAID IT!! THORFINN SAID THOSE WORDS THAT THORS SAID TO HIM ALL THAT TIME AGO AT THE VERY BEGINNING!!! I can't believe it. I never expected those words to be brought back and with so much power and conviction behind them. Thorfinn is an absolute legend. And following that, taking 100 hits and being acknowledged as a true warrior, he reunited with Canute. It didn't really go the way he wanted though...Canute isn't backing down with his "new" mission

It’s crazy to have seen him grow from a pretty unlikable and static character (which was clearly by design, hence why Yukimura gave us Askeladd to pretty much be the protagonist of the first arc) into a character that is just so damn inspirational. He’s easily made it into my favorites. Up there with other goats like Luffy, Tenma, Eren, Guts, etc.

Canute commanding the waves to cease was an actual event in history. One which many people mistook for him being crazed with power. Vinland Saga put it into the real context of what Canute was doing. No one is all powerful, but can use what power you have for better or worse. Einar brought Canute down to earth hard with truth about the common person. Thorfinn is just a beast, telling the guy to hurry up with punching him. He is Thorfinn Karlsefni "makings of a man" indeed!
@akhiltrc9708

I don’t think anything Einar said affected Canute in the least. He was just showing Thorfinn how powerless humans are against God. Both Thorfinn and Canute are mighty men, both taking very different paths to build Paradise. Thorfinn trying to achieve it with non-violence, compassion and Tolerance. Canute trying to achieve it with might, smarts, leadership and necessary violence.

In real life canute pushed big for the conversion to Christianity and his legendary wave speech was an example that even kings must defer to the Christian lord. He was a humble and devoute christian his entire life and his efforts set the stages for the 1st crusades. Its actually interesting how relevant it is to history even today. The unfortunate state of the middle east could entirely be attributed to the damage done by the crusades. IRL Canute was absoltuely not fighting against god, he was serving him as he best saw fit and it worked a bit too well.
@nullakjg767

@Trashthlete the war in the middle east was very much a modern crusade. bush literally said god told him to do it in order to garner support which the UK and many other nations assisted with militaristically.

@Trashthlete Your previous points were worthless, christanity has been in charge before and it was known as the dark ages. The crusades werent their only conflict, it was just one in a laundry list. Theyre a very violent people historically and even now. Youre just trying to distract from the original point that the man in this video is just continuing on that tradition. The bible is filled with calls to action to eliminate any competing faiths and ideologies. Denying that just makes you look ignorant.

*King Canute is actually a real person, the last scene is based on a famous Story of King Canute of England Commanding the waves -* *[W]hen at the summit of his power, he ordered a seat to be placed for him on the sea-shore when the tide was coming in. Then, before a large group of his flattering courtiers, he spoke* *to the rising sea, saying, "Thou, too, art subject to my command, for the land on which I am seated is mine, and no one has ever resisted my commands with impunity. I command you,* *then, o waters, not to flow over my land, nor presume to wet the feet and the robe of your lord."* *The tide, however, continued to rise as usual, dashing over his feet and legs without respect to his royal person.* *Then the King leaped backwards, saying: "Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea* *obey by eternal laws."* *Thenceforth King Canute never wore his crown of gold, but placed it for a lasting memorial on a statue of Our Lord to the honor of God the Almighty King, through whose mercy may the* *soul of Canute, the King, enjoy everlasting rest.*

Scandanavian last names usually started with their father's name and "son" or "dotter" at the end of it. So Thorfinn's real name is more like Thorfinn Thorson. Karlsefni means "Making of a man" or "Promising man" and he earned that title after his rematch with Thorkell. He is based off of the real Thorfinn Karlsefni so that's how they incorperated that name into the series.

Why does everyone think that Canute has changed? Watch the 20th episode of the 1st season. He said bluntly: "If you have to become a demon to build heaven on earth, he will do it." Canute is trying to bring peace to the most hostile culture. This is impossible without violence.
@vytmork
@vytmork Жыл бұрын
I mean, he has changed, just that his goals have not. The Canute we see now has gained a lot more perspective and experience in these 4 years compared to the one from episode 20. I think back then, he knew what he'd have to do, but these past 4 years have definitely made him understand just how harsh of a job he's taken upon himself, which is why he's a lot more lifeless now and why his father's head keeps bothering him as a form of his own guilt and self-criticism. Though one thing I don't really get is why Mai thought he doesn't believe in God. This whole thing about him came about because he believes in god, just that he lost his faith in him.

I think it was just that people never thought Canute's methods would be so extreme to the point he had to poison his own brother (well, killing your own relatives to secure the throne was not unusual). 😅 but true, his intention to "rebel against God" was all already revealed in S1. It was always there. But he continues to learn.

I think it's the type of change. His fundamental beliefs and views did change back in season 1 but it's his personality and actions he's willing to take that have changed over the course of season 2. I think how the author shows the vikings with Thorfinn is amazing. At first they think he's a joke and something to play with because they believe he's just a slave acting up, but you can see once Thorfinn shows his resolve and he makes it till the end no one is laughing or cracking jokes anymore, they're all solemn with respect they hold for him now as a warrior. So it's not that they feel nothing because they definitely feel respect for him at the end. For vikings the only thing that mattered is strength and this episode is pretty much paramount to that with Canute's speech.

I dont think u understand Canute very well. He isnt a coward or a power hungry tyrant. He and Thorfinn actually share the same goal: To create a paradise rid of war and slavery. But their means are completely opposite. Thorfinn will reject violence while Canute will kill innocents, be it for the same goal. I think theyre both as respectable as eachother, even though they are both in eachothers way of said goal. I do disagree with Canutes means however. Thorfinns pacifistic ideology is by far much better then Canutes ruthlessness. But we live in different times as they did. And back then when killing and slavery was so common, I think Canute can be forgiven due to his overall motive of a better world
@OtakuMai
@OtakuMai Жыл бұрын
Towards the end and when I rewatched it on my own I came to realise that. They want the same things but it's their methods that are clashing which is what's so interesting about it. Even though like you said killing and slavery was common back then, I think the whole point of Vinland Saga is to move away from that which is why even though Canute's goal is paradise, his means are wrong through and through

Canute's motivations still remain the same as when he stared down Bjorn. I also don't think Askeladd would bother giving an opinion on how Canute is pushing things, considering he considered himself as "just a viking". I mean, I don't think Askeladd would sacrifice himself for someone he didn't have absolute faith in, considering he was someone who rose to power by tricking people. Canute is trying to bring peace to the most hostile culture. This is impossible without violence. We need restrictions, harsh laws... what Canute is already doing. To change the worldview of a huge culture = to build a paradise on this territory. It's a difficult task, but for some reason people don't understand Canute. He cant afford this army consisting of almost all the vikings, so he needs to steal farm lands from many nobles. Then with this terrifying force, he creates peace much later. I love how realistic these characters are & feel, because Einar made the most sense, but how does one change people cultured in war? Thorfinn is making up for his sins as someone who's been both Viking & a slave, Einar is a victim of two kings and Canute is rebelling at the idea of humans suffering through trials & temptations before getting to paradise... he has the power to do something. Canute is rebelling against "God", for me that always spelled "god complex". Askeladd chose to swear his fealty towards Canute, because he wasn't going take lives unnecessarily... but lives would be lost nonetheless and Canute is attempting to build something no Viking has ever attempted and like Thorfinn & Einar realized theirs is "...but a dream" at this point.

I feel Canute's statement of "Fighting God" doesn't necessarily mean in the literal sense. I believe he is trying to inculcate the good morals religion (in this case, Christianity) has to offer to the Vikings who weren't made aware of these things because of their barabaric nature and to change their mindset from being barabaric to affirm strength to that of a "TRUE WARRIOR" as stated by Thors. I believe that's what he means by "saving the Vikings." Saving the Vikings from this barabric lifestyle.
@OtakuMai

I get that but also I feel this is a true rebellion against god for Canute. He believes in god and his ideals but believes that god will not allow the vikings to reach paradise so he wants to change that

Yeah Canute has become obsessed with God to the point he’s started sidelining his original goal. Which he technically still wants to achieve but he’s like trying to oppose both god and achieve a paradise except now he’s willing to walk down a path of corpses. He’s in a weird limbo where he believes in god but also hates God. Did you notice how Thorfinn’s old voice slipped out when he started yelling at Drott?!? I love that little touch the VA has done a great job changing up to a softer chill voice for season 2! It kinda almost made you forget how he used to talk!!
@OtakuMai
@OtakuMai Жыл бұрын
Yeah it's like Canute still has the same motivations and ideals that developed towards the end of season 1 but his method of obtaining them and the way in which he thinks he can achieve them is different. And it all related back to god. Yes omg hearing Thofrinn voice as he was shouting really took me back to season 1, it came as such a shock after how different his voice has been this season

Great reaction as always!!! And sorry if this comes to be considered spam, it is not my intention to disturb but... Mai, I'd like to recommend an anime for you to watch when you can (although it would be lovely if you reacted to it), seriously, it's a hidden gem with a deaf-mute protagonist as radiant as our Sunbeam Mob "Ousama Ranking" Trust me, you won't regret it.

On the topic of whether this is what Askeladd would have wanted from Canute, you got to remember the only thing that Askeladd really wanted was a leader to follow and safety for Wales. He was never really all too interested in the whole Paradise part of Canute's plan so long as Wales would be free from any coming wars
