You can't have a space hotel without artifical gravity either! If civilians sleep up there they'll turn fast into squid-like weaklings. It wouldn't be profitable enough. Gotta lick the gravity problem before we get serious about anything else long-term up there if it has to do with civilians or deep space manned missions.

Weakening of bone and muscular tissue happens gradually over time. A short stay of a few days won't affect you significantly. So you can totally have a space hotel. The dep space thing, though, that *is* a problem.

@@artbargra how closely do you follow this stuff? didn't NASA say that gravity affects adult females more than men and that the effects were seen in a few days? I'm not positive, just thought the whole gravity thing was proven to be essential almost immediately

@@TXpatriate According to some studies I'm reading, moderate effects appear around 7-14 days, with severe effects appearing around 35 days (28-56 days). This, mind you, is exposure with no compensation (e.g. exercise). NASA keeps a close tab on astronauts, and have them undergo rigurous training while in space, to minimize those effects. Now, here's a question: will the space tourists be subjected to a similar program? That's the million dollar question here.

I just can't imagine a 0G orbital hotel being cost-effective for a long time: you have to take a dump or take a pee in zero G, floatin' around, which must be like struggling with a 19th century chamber pot and tureen that won't stay still; you'd bounce around trying to have sex; your food drifts in your face. All sortsa stuff that's gotta be an undignified nuisance if you think of sleeping up there for a few days. And then there's your customers. For some time only the superrich would try it out, and then the rich. And I doubt they'd go up there more than once or twice, since hotels in general are where you go when you're traveling or if you have business in the area. Without artificial gravity, this would be little more than a very expensive amusement park ride, with very little practical purpose and a long stretch before a private company would see a profit. That's my GUESS. Of course, one solution might be annexing the structure to a supplies transport to service whatever the next generation of the ISS will be. Contracts from that might help fund this fanciful "hotel".
