“Drink water from the spring where horses drink. The horse will never drink bad water. Lay your bed where the cat sleeps. Eat the fruit that has been touched by a worm. Boldly pick the mushroom on which the insects sit. Plant the tree where the mole digs. Build your house where the snake sits to warm itself. Dig your fountain where the birds hide from heat. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time with the birds - you will reap all of the days golden grains. Eat more green - you will have strong legs and a resistant heart, like the beings of the forest. Swim often and you will feel on earth like the fish in the water. Look at the sky as often as possible and your thoughts will become light and clear. Be quiet a lot, speak little - and silence will come in your heart, and your spirit will be calm and full of peace.” Saint Seraphim of Sarov

@@janehutchinson9860 here in the uk most people don't put their eggs in the fridge as they don't need it if just washed and shells in tact, but our eggs are nearly all brown like Jess has there. not white like i understand you get from a us store, my understanding is in the us the way they commercially clean the eggs makes the shells thinner.
@tonyaciuba547
@tonyaciuba547 4 жыл бұрын
@@joannelambert2635 Here in the US the store bought eggs are pasteurized, so they have to be refrigerated afterwards. The eggs are usually white because most poultry farms use the white leghorn breed (good layers and don't require as much food as heavy breeds). White leghorns lay white eggs. Some use brown egglayers like sexlinks or Rhode Island Reds. Those are usually marketed as organic cage free even though the color of the eggs are dependent on the breed of chicken. Personally, I prefer to raise my own chickens and have a variety of colored eggs without the pasteurization and added chemicals.

A friend of mine who is Hungarian makes something similar at the end of the season. He uses a base of shredded cabbage and add sliced cukes, shredded carrots ,onions, cauliflower even green tomatoes, vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar and toss it and taste. Leave it overnight to marinate. Next day, he jars the veg and seal the jars quickly in a boiling bath as per usual. It is delicious pickled salad to clean up your garden!!

A very good alternative to salt is a little dishwashing soap. It kills the bugs, they float up to the top of the water. A good rinsing will remove any soap flavor.

When I moved cities about 12 years ago I got an organic box. In my lettuce there was a slug. It was a flashbulb moment for me; I thought about why this happy little slug was here, and I had never seen anything alive in my lettuce before. That’s when the amount of poison on our food became very apparent to me. It would be another 5 years or so after that, that I started my journey into gardening. 💗

Sluggo is a natural organic slug and snail killer. It's just iron phosphate. They're little pellets, that do better actually with rain...they absorb the rain and make it easier for slugs or snails to eat it. Upon consumption, they stop eating it makes them wiggle off and starve to death. And the pellets last a pretty long time. They also have a version with spinosad that kills pill bugs, earwigs, etc

When my husband and I were first married we had to go away over lunchtime, so I made my husband a sandwich for the road. I ran to the garden and grabbed some lettuce and quickly rinsed them off. I looked the leaves over quickly but not thoroughly. My husband was happily munching on his sandwich and suddenly stopped eating and pulled something out of his mouth. It was a slug. He said it didn't taste bad but he thought the ham was awfully gristley and chewy. I was mortified for about 3 seconds but then I thought it was hilarious. I still do. Good thing he has a good sense of humour and is forgiving.

I always recommend parents of young children plant potatoes. You can plant store bought, so it's nothing fancy, but I always thought harvesting them was like digging for treasure! My daughter used to love being asked to go dig potatoes for dinner. She got very good at plunging her hands into the garden and pulling out treasures. Then packing the dirt back for the next "dig".

Now I really hope I get some cauliflower (I probably won't but I try every spring anyway). I just washed the ants off of the best most tender lettuce I have ever eaten. Homegrown is just better and I totally agree I don't want to eat anything a bug finds disgusting I just want to beat them to it 😀

Looks yummy - love pickled stuff. I will have to try this. I had a dog that loved carrots and potato peelings. A favorite dish of ours is a Hobo dish. We take whatever types of fresh veggies and put in (cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes, carrots, asparagus, onions, garlic, turnips, zucchini, cabbage, etc) and add kielbasa or sausage with butter and some olive oil. You just can’t go wrong with homegrown veggies.

Do you have the cookbook, "The Gentleman's Companion Volume I Being An Exotic Cookery Book or, Around the World With Knife, Fork and Spoon" by Charles H. Baker? It was originally published in the 1930s and was recipes he'd collected all over the world. Great travel stories too. Volume II was mixed drinks. You can find it pretty reasonably online. It has everything from a cuban avocado salad, to a recipe for cooking hippo.

Very true, just shows you how many chemicals that was used for the produce in the big stores. Nothing like home grown.

This was a great video as alway. I was glad you mentioned you were a bit weirded out in the beginning too. I had a had full of lettuce yesterday I told the hubs "this had frog poo or frog eggs on it" so here we go. Lol I washed it and we ate it. When we first moved on to our land I cooked on my washer with an electric wok and a crock pot for two years. I am sure your kitchen will be done very quickly. Fyi you can make rice crispy treats in a wok!🤣

Your point with Organic vegetables at the grocery store is so true! I was pursuing a biology degree and we learned "organic" food is a myth as something can be sprayed/added to the food after the harvest and have it still be considered organic, and its mainly advertised as such for the price tag. Growing your own food is the only true way to know what is happening to it during the process. Thank you so much for everything you share with us! I would like to have a small farm of my own someday and this is very inspirational and motivating for me :)

I'm continually blessed by you, Jess! After a long hot,sweaty shift at work, I came home to take sanctuary in my garden, sit down with an ice coffee, and listen to this girl who is rooted in her love of the beauty and abundance that God has blessed her with! Your humor, candor, and practicality continue to bring joy to me! I'm going to try the recipe too...but I'm going to keep my eye out for stow aways!😄

I feel so validated on my nerves from eating real food😂😂 my dad had a garden we would eat from and I remember big puff worms in the corn ears that would just gross me out. Then when my parents got divorced, my mom didnt grow anything and I never got to face my fear. But now I'm growing my own food and slowly but surely learning to work with nature!!

It kinda makes me happy to find a bug in my produce, because I know the farmer isnt totally obliterated it with some type of pesticide, if I am weird so be it!
