“Drink water from the spring where horses drink. The horse will never drink bad water. Lay your bed where the cat sleeps. Eat the fruit that has been touched by a worm. Boldly pick the mushroom on which the insects sit. Plant the tree where the mole digs. Build your house where the snake sits to warm itself. Dig your fountain where the birds hide from heat. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time with the birds - you will reap all of the days golden grains. Eat more green - you will have strong legs and a resistant heart, like the beings of the forest. Swim often and you will feel on earth like the fish in the water. Look at the sky as often as possible and your thoughts will become light and clear. Be quiet a lot, speak little - and silence will come in your heart, and your spirit will be calm and full of peace.” Saint Seraphim of Sarov

When my husband and I were first married we had to go away over lunchtime, so I made my husband a sandwich for the road. I ran to the garden and grabbed some lettuce and quickly rinsed them off. I looked the leaves over quickly but not thoroughly. My husband was happily munching on his sandwich and suddenly stopped eating and pulled something out of his mouth. It was a slug. He said it didn't taste bad but he thought the ham was awfully gristley and chewy. I was mortified for about 3 seconds but then I thought it was hilarious. I still do. Good thing he has a good sense of humour and is forgiving.

@@janehutchinson9860 here in the uk most people don't put their eggs in the fridge as they don't need it if just washed and shells in tact, but our eggs are nearly all brown like Jess has there. not white like i understand you get from a us store, my understanding is in the us the way they commercially clean the eggs makes the shells thinner.
@tonyaciuba5474 жыл бұрын
@@joannelambert2635 Here in the US the store bought eggs are pasteurized, so they have to be refrigerated afterwards. The eggs are usually white because most poultry farms use the white leghorn breed (good layers and don't require as much food as heavy breeds). White leghorns lay white eggs. Some use brown egglayers like sexlinks or Rhode Island Reds. Those are usually marketed as organic cage free even though the color of the eggs are dependent on the breed of chicken. Personally, I prefer to raise my own chickens and have a variety of colored eggs without the pasteurization and added chemicals.

There nothing better than tending to God’s garden and His children. Such a blessing for the two of you to share with your children! We recently bought a log cabin and several acres of good Maryland ground. Devotions are finished, My large garden is growing abundantly and my chickens are laying profusely. I’m currently knitting hubby a blanket, relaxing while watching my favorite KZbin channel: Roots and Refuge. Ever hear of them. 😆 May God’s blessings continue to shine on your family, friends, neighbors and fans! Rhonda

Your point with Organic vegetables at the grocery store is so true! I was pursuing a biology degree and we learned "organic" food is a myth as something can be sprayed/added to the food after the harvest and have it still be considered organic, and its mainly advertised as such for the price tag. Growing your own food is the only true way to know what is happening to it during the process. Thank you so much for everything you share with us! Jess, I love that you're talking about bugs and organic gardening!! I've squashed off and washed a lot of caterpillars off of my kale in the last week. I'm definitely adjusting to organic garden harvests! Even if the produce doesn't have bugs on it, just the act of looking for bugs on leaves with holes in them can put me off if I think about it too much. But you're right...it tastes so much better and I much more appreciate now how much preservatives and insecticides must be applied to grocery store produce (even organic produce). I'd rather deal with bugs than preservatives and insecticides. Once again, my garden teaches me so much! Thanks for talking about this. I feel much better :)

I always recommend parents of young children plant potatoes. You can plant store bought, so it's nothing fancy, but I always thought harvesting them was like digging for treasure! My daughter used to love being asked to go dig potatoes for dinner. She got very good at plunging her hands into the garden and pulling out treasures. Then packing the dirt back for the next "dig".

7:52 the Spock bust next to the sink really geeked me out XD Once upon a sprig of store bought basil on my table for a couple days and when I finally needed it, all the leaves were gone and there was a big happy caterpillar in the box. We didn't have basil but we had a good laugh about it. I get a lot of weird looks when I talk about bugs on my veggies. I've really found it to be endearing that my veggies have dirt and insects on them when I collect them because I know my garden is organic and I'm supporting the ecosystem around me. It's no big deal for me cause I just wash it when I bring it home (and tbh if there's a bug or two left in there, what I don't know can't hurt me!). So people can judge all they want but at the end of the day my dirty, buggy veggies nourish me and my family all the same.

Had them soaking for hours, rinsed through colander 3 times and STILL found a baby slug when I was chopping them up to put in the pot. I ate the cooked greens slowly but since I put chopped garlic and crushed red pepper in the greens when they were cooking, I wouldn’t be able to tell if I was eating a critter that still managed to hang on and I had to find a way to be ok with that because now I know the work and care that goes into gardening and harvesting - no waste! But next time I will soak in salt water...that’s a great idea!!

My grandfather made giardiniera every year to can and save his cauliflower a d carrots and traditionally would bring it out and serve it on Easter. It's *so* delicious! I'm pretty sure that's what you're making. I'm hungry watching this!

You stated it perfectly, every time I look at the vegetables in the market I wonder what are they putting on this stuff because every home gardener knows that it is not natural.

I love eating that stuff... i usually buy it from the grocery store but I think I'll make my own this year since I'm doing my own gardening. ... I cant wait! Thank you!!!!!

Very pretty jars of pickled vegetables! I’ve been wanting to do some pickled onions, really the only veggie big enough from garden. Did have radishes and peas. Lots of lettuce, first time growing kale, it’s great. Cukes & zucchini, plants growing slow. Carrots & beets didn’t do much, even with replanting. Planted okra, and put tomatoes and pepper transplants in the straw bales. Have pole beans in another bale. The heat is gonna finally set in so hope it gives the warm season things a boost to grow faster! ❤️👍🏻
