Wooden gates are tough. Wooden double gates are a whole different story. There's a reason my company builds steel frame gates almost exclusively. Today we're checking out a wooden double gate build. Will this double gate hold up? Let's dig into to find out!

I like building my double gates as one unit -- then once all level and hinges bolted solid I use sawzall to cut it into two units. I most always work alone and it seems to work for me. I do approve of the half lap but I use a bit less glue ;). I will through bolt the strap hinge onto the gate with 1/4" carriage bolts to lock it and the lap joint together. I think this guy did a good job .. but those are two BIG gates and I bet it will need adjustments within a few years. Love your objective assessments of these videos Joe!

I built a 16 foot gate with two ~8' sections like this. Half lap with more than one crossmember. The pickets make the structure of the gate super solid, they don't rack by any means, but even with my 6x8 monster posts in concrete, they still had enough weight to pull the posts inward a pinch, throwing off alignments. The only way I can think to fix that is use some kind of tension wire and attach to the post and pull it backward to help hold the weight. For example attaching the wire to the base of the next fence post to about 5 foot up on the gate post. And/or add a wheel system to the gate to reduce the weight and keep the gate level. I kind of wish I had the time and money to build this as a steel gate on a pipe/wheel system so it slides instead of opens like a door. A sliding gate at this size makes more sense.

Started watching your vid. Husband came up and was like, "Are you tryna build a fence? Our fence is fine..." Tell him I just wanted some knowledge. He then explains how the fence along the south side of the house needs to be rebuilt. So yeah, I guess I AM (more like, HE IS) building a fence. 🤷‍♀ Thx for the knowledge!

It is one of the better ways to build a wood frame gate that I have seen.

As a fencer we would only ever build frames out of galvanised steel or aluminium depending on the cladding material steel typically for timber and steel fences Ali for mostly aluminium fences. We have never built timber frame gates and likely never will as the amount of possible movement in the material over time for something that needs to be very rigid to us means it's simply the wrong choice. For the minor price difference here in Australia as our timber is very expensive, it's just not worth considering.

Lot of overkill in places that don’t need it and underkill in places that do

2:28 If you're going to make cuts like on a table saw use a miter gauge, don't free hand it.

I have heard that building a gate that wide will cause issues as the cross brace angle past the 45 degree angle. believe adding another vertical support in the middle and add 2 diag support in between each new box will fix this issue.

Good god he isn’t scared of kickback. Freehand cutting on a table saw is wild. One cut is one thing but all the cuts you have to make for a half lap… Why not just use a miter gauge?

I have a question, if you were gonna fence in an acre or so that has uneven ground in some areas, what would you use? I volunteer fulltime at a small non profit dog rescue, we're in the process of looking into fencing the property that we lease so that we can have open areas for dogs to run in, it'd be a perimeter fence with fenced off areas inside of it. Edit: We are on the northern california coast near oregon.

Would it be okay to set each post with 1 bag of quickcrete and then come back the next day and fill the remainder of the hole with regular concrete.

I have done tons of fence and can tell you that wet setting is the best way to set your fence. Make sure your mixture doesn't have toob much water. It only takes one bag, if you mix it with hammer drill on speed 1 in 5 gallon bucket it takes less than 30 seconds to mix. If doing by yourself, half bag at a time. Lightly pack with 10-20 pounds of force then as much as you can on last pack. Dry set only advantage is that it saves fencer time. Quickrete and concrete are the same thing. There are different forms but they are the same thing. You can also set posts with no concrete just don't do it on gate posts.

@@bobbygetsbanned6049 with the proper bracing via a cross brace I’ve never had one fail. It’s always a repair service call on another installers job that installed one like this and it’s bowed so bad their pet can run right out the bottom even when latched

Just use galvanised steel tubing, do it right and do it once. Many gates I have built are getting on the 25 - 30 year mark and they are still perfectly strong and square.
