It is a question of fairness. UK taxpayers pay into society and, in return, receive certain benefits. When people illegally enter the country and are gifted benefits, funded by the taxpayers of that country, it causes huge resentment. In many cases they are gifted more benefits (24hr access to a doctor, 3* hotels with no energy bills to worry about). This is not racism. It would not matter whatever the ethnic background of the illegals. Would we react the same if the illegals were white, Christian Canadians? I am sure we would. We pay tax in expectation of a social contract with our Government that provides us with, not least, protection of our borders and a duty to spend the taxes that we pay wisely and fairly.

Speaking in my capacity as an on-line know-all, it's NOT impossible to enforce the law. All it takes is a government with a spine. There are many islands and isolated areas in Europe (and plenty off islands off the UK shoreline) and there's nothing to stop governments building camps there to hold these people. Give them the choice to stay there until their individual cases are processed, however long that takes, or get a trip home on the taxpayer (that would still be much cheaper than housing them in hotels). If you stand your ground and keep building and filling these camps, it won't be long before the migrants -- who are nearly all economic -- get the message and will stop coming. By the way, the NGOs ARE people smugglers.

18:00 I'd happily call someone from Hong Kong British, if that's how they thought of themself. I think it's odd that a fellow Brit might not. I think of Britishness as being just as much an attitude to life, as it is anything to do with your nationality. The United Kingdom is full of people who I don't consider British, because *they* don't consider themselves British-regardless of whether or not they were born here.
@andylewis7360 Жыл бұрын
Not just odd. Insidious.

@@emissary_of_aldebaranI agree about the pessimistic outcomes. But it’s all a matter of perspective. What’s pessimistic for native Brits and those who feel British may be optimistic for those who stand to benefit. Most notably those in Westminster The City of London Geneva Brussels and Davos.
@stephenphilbin3919 Жыл бұрын
@@emissary_of_aldebaran Nonsense. Any Hong Konger who sees themself as British, is already much more entitled to refer to themself as such, than huge numbers of people who were born here but choose to remain in self-segregated colonies. We have lots of divides in the country, just as any country does, but none of it matters compared to things like support for an impartial justice system that doesn't care who you are, what your job is, or what-if any-religion you follow.
@christinaedwards5084 Жыл бұрын
So if you went to live in hongkong or anywhere else would you relinquish your British identity? I assure you the people that do come here still keep their national identity, it’s who they are. They only take the term ‘British’ for a passport and financial benefits. Outside of that they remain who they are. Did you not see the 3rd generation Indian woman talking about “back home in India” despite her being British her whole life. You’re more than where your born, you can take a Pakistani out of pakistan, but you can’t take the Pakistani out of them. Same with every other nation of people.
@stephenphilbin3919 Жыл бұрын
@@emissary_of_aldebaran No, you're just talking like someone who thinks that Socialism and National Socialism aren't rooted in total horse 💩. Without any kind of stratification, no society/nation could ever develop. To say that a nation is stratified is simply an acknowledgement of its existence; what matters about the stratification is its structure and its maintenance (or lack of maintenance like we have today). What you say about ethnicity has me curious, though. Which of the following would you consider to be more British? 1) Someone who's ethnically British, but subscribes to a religious sect which promotes the subjugation and brutal mistreatment of anyone of any age who is not a member of that sect. 2) A British-born ethnic Arab, who believes that people must be treated equally by the law, regardless of their religion, and that the law takes precedence over any religious law whenever the two come into conflict.

Pathetic. Even if we deported every single illegal migrant, we would still become a minority within our own nation. Legal migration is 1,000,000x worse for us than illegal migration.
@duncansmith7562 Жыл бұрын
Douglas is confused about the laws on immigration (there is no one law on immigration).. Contradictory though it is, a migrant can arrive in the UK with no documentation, claim asylum, and that is legal (hence no migrants are arrested in Dover). Until that law is changed, the law on entering a country illegally (without valid documentation) is irrelevant.
@lr6477 Жыл бұрын
Wrong. They aren't arrested because of the sheers numbers, not enough jails
@duncansmith7562 Жыл бұрын
@@lr6477 In law it is only permitted to seek asylum once in the UK, whatever the means of arrival, so even if there were prisons aplenty, the migrants would be allowed to claim asylum and stay. Unless that law is changed, the arrivals will keep increasing. It's that simple. It neds to be reversed, namely, asylum in the UK can ONLY be claimed outside the UK, and those arriving with no valid documentation will be deported immediately and stripped of all valuables to pay for such service.

15:35 - Douglas: "...we have massively overestimated our ability to integrate people..." I think, the problem goes deeper. Our mistake was to ignore that integration is an *active process*, much like learning. One could "be welcomed" (like a guest). But one cannot "be integrated", only integrate oneself. If you don't want to learn a language, culture, system of norms, traditions, values and laws etc., then nobody can teach you. But integrating is hard and all incentives for it are undermined, when you can simply join your own foreign enclave.

I can imagine that people moving from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom besides mostly being educated, having university degrees, many of them also have traveled internationally and have more of a globally mindset. Even if they aren’t well off, they may have friends or neighbors that have travelled to different countries, or have talked about the news in different countries, and so they can easily integrate into another country and they’re willing to work, or perhaps set up their own business or entrepreneurship and contribute to their new country in many ways.

This is british territory and uninhabited - they can be deposited there until they get back in their boat and go back to france 5 miles away. If they are less cooperative then they can be deposited on the nearby sandbank instead - they'll be back in their boat when the tide comes up.

Once these people have arrived and 'settled' in the countries that they have selected for themselves (their choice being unimpeded, demonstrably, by their hapless 'host' country), they seem to do nothing but make further problems and can only sing the praises of their home country, their 'heritage' - notwithstanding the fact that these are the very places they clearly thought so intolerable that they had to leave them. If those who dissent from the regimes that they claim are oppressing them (the only legitimate basis for claim to asylum elsewhere) simply leave and relocate, their home countries will never improve. It is their patriotic duty to resist oppression and improve their own states - of which they never cease being proud. People say these refugees are resilient and courageous - but they are all apparently in flight from challenges, opting for a soft-touch easier life, usually at someone else's expense.

Here's the fact: the ONLY European politician enforcing his country's laws and politics is Viktor Orban. I mean, like it or not; he's not my favourite person in the world either; but that's how it's been for over a decade now. I mean separating people fleeing famine from people just wanting a bit higher standard, let's go back and ask WHY do people have the luxury to FLEE famine? Why don't Germans and Ukranians and Russians just flee famine and come to the USA instead of planting all that stuff for feeding themselves? Yes I realize Africa is not ideal for the crops but neither is Siberia nor the northern belt. Developing Africa from outside? How MUCH should you actually develop it for people to be happy enbough not to leave? I wager if EU develops it enough to surpass Japan, but without local population having to do any work, just existing on European funds, they might all be happy enough to not invade Italy? Or will a substantial part of population say "ok so now we have everything and we're educated but we're bored, we want to go to Europe anyway"? I'm sorry but this is all bloody nonsense. Pack them up and send them home, I'm sorry. I'm not from the most developed part of the world either and I've been looking to re-locate more than once; still looking, I've been on a work visa in the USA, I've had some opportunities for work in countries of the EU, turns out I'm a total idiot - I should've just spent some more time in the sun to darken up my skin, walked in and played stupid. Why'd I work in a country where working class sees a smartphone as a luxury when I could just live off welfare in a country in which homeless people mock me for having an android instead of an iPhone (yes, I've literally, LITERALLY had that happen to me in Norway)? Oi.
