I was there in the 1970's. I don't recall any "haters" of Nancy Wilson. We didn't even HAVE the term "haters". We didn't worry about who was the better player. Were the guitar players in Jethro Tull better than those in Bad Company or Thin Lizzy? Who the hell cared? We listened to it all!

Don’t know if you ever saw the Tesla Five Man Acoustical Jam full concert video, but Frank Hannon does his own acoustic guitar solo, then Nancy’s “Crazy On You” intro, then that Randy Rhoads “Dee”-esque intro, then “Love Song”. That was my first exposure to Nancy’s intro.

As soon as I saw the title, I knew exactly what was coming. I love to attempt that intro, but can't play it nearly as well as you, my friend. Well done! I've been a massive Heart fan since the beginning and seen them about a dozen times over the years. I was on the front row at a show in 2009 with my wife and another couple. Notorius and unapologetic for absent-mindedly playing air guitar in public, I made eye contact with Ann a few times. When Nancy walked out to play this song for the encore, she stood right in front of me and did an extended intro similar to the one in the clip. My friend leaned over and said to me "You know that's for you." A year later, my friend's husband and I saw them again in another venue from a different postion in the audience and the same thing happened. He leaned over and said "Here we go again." Thanks for evoking two great memories!

I didn't realize how good she was or how much Nancy played when I got to see Heart in 1979. At one point the lights dimmed and Nancy walked to center stage with a chair and acoustic guitar. She jammed for maybe 15 minutes when some notes from "Crazy" started creeping into her jam, then eventually she was playing the intro and everyone went crazy! I've always known women could rock and many are better than any man! Currently my favorite band is Band-Maid!!!

As a young girl, I loved rock & roll in the 70s and wanted to be John Fogerty. My mom had a little acoustic guitar that I would figure out some tunes. Then, I heard Magic Man on the radio and the lyrics, Ann's voice - just mesmerized me. I would play out what she was singing about in my head. And, when I did see that Nancy was the one rocking out on the intro to Crazy On You, I just HAD to learn guitar. My guitar instructor taught me Dreamboat Annie plus a few other popular songs of the time. Within a year, I'd figured out how to play every single song on the Dreamboat Annie album. She's epic for me!

Ah yay, the interview you used at the start is my favourite. Love her words in it. Her hair in that is basically the haircut I show to every stylist I go to haha. I LOVE that opening bend in Magic Man, gives me such a cool feeling when I hear it. I grew up listening to the radio a LOT. Kinda stopped in recent years but the past week or so I've been getting back in to having the radio on. That Crazy on You intro is insane. I've watched that exact live concert footage multiple times and other examples as well. I think I may have even sent you one not too long ago of some that was recently remastered/ enchanced. I've not attempted any fingerstyle as yet, my nails are kinda weak in strength so I think I may have to end up using a pick more often. Nancy actually responded to my question to her Instagram story when I asked what the most achievable Heart song is for a beginner, she said Dreamboat Annie ☺️ so I think I'll start with that. Can't wait to see your next acoustic intro vid. I do love when you play it. I'll be looking forward to a full Crazy on You lesson on the website for sure! 🙂🤘🏻🔥

Heart was so good and so original, they didn't model themselves after anyone. It was their new thing, like, yes we can! Ann had range and power in her singing. Nancy was so skilled and yet even being a founding member would give way to the other guitarists and members of the band. The lyrics of their songs were so great with an edge to them and yet clearly written by these young women that everyone could identify with.

I remember when Dreamboat Annie first came out. They recorded it a few blocks away at Mushroom Studios, so the local scene was well aware of it. On listening to the album, the opening song showed the acoustics guitar playing and vocals really well. When it cut into the opening acoustics for Crazy On You, and they Crazy On You, we were blown away. The sound was unique (love the percussion on the album) and the vocals were absolutely amazing. The whole album contained a lot of great songs, and it was their debut album. Nancy only just turned 21 when that album was recorded. And if you want to see a singer with an amazing voice that is controlled really well, as well as being a real looker (reminded me of Snow White), watch an early Heart video.

Battle of Evermore, Black Dog, The Song Remains the Same* What is and What Should Never Be, Misty Mountain Hop, Four Sticks*, No Quarter*, Going to California, The Ocean*, Immigrant Song*, The Rain Song*, Kashmir*, Stairway to Heaven*, Rock and Roll.

Back in the 70s, my older sister introduced me to a lot of awesome music, and this song was one of the songs I remember the most. Unfortunately, it's close to impossible to find musicians in my area who would be willing or capable of covering this song. As for acoustic intros, when I was in high school, about 1981 or 2, I would spend hours trying to play the acoustic for Burning Heart by Vandenberg. I was fortunate enough to see him open up for Ozzie Osborne in 1982.

Nancy supposedly auditioned for Heart by playing "Clap" by Yes. (Everyone ought to listen to that song- Steve Howe is great.) "Clap" is fast Travis picked countryish madness- I've never considered attempting to learn it. But she played it note for note according to her sister. Nancy Wilson is a superb player, no doubt.

I've had quite a few moments when Heart really moved me with their music, but I have to say that the most powerful one was the Led Zeppelin tribute at the Kennedy Center. At the time it had long been an established rule that no one anywhere at any time could do justice to Stairway to Heaven. Playing the intro would get you banned from any guitar store. But there they were, Ann and Nancy performing the iconic song on the big stage, in front of all three surviving members of Led Zep. Jimmy Page looked delighted. Robert Plant looked pensive, pulling at his beard and probably thinking "I used to sing like that."

Nice job Mike. That's a very tough intro to nail, no matter how experienced of a player anyone is. She's self-taught and has unique ways of doing things. As a side-note, us older people that grew up in the album (LP) age all knew that Nancy played the intro, due to the liner notes and credits on the Dreamboat Annie album. They stated: Acoustic Guitar: Nancy Wilson, Electric Guitars: Roger Fisher and Howard Leese.

If you wanna try fingerpicking with nails and do it often, I'd suggest getting acrylic nails. I'm a life-long nail biter and could never grow my picking nails out, so I tried acrylic nails when I was really getting into picking and they worked well. You can cut them so they're no so long or discreet. However, plenty of pickers don't have long nails. Mark Knopfler uses his fingertips, not nails, and has amazing tone. Using fingertips always felt more natural to me anyway, if you practice enough you can get your attack down - I viewed it as similar to plucking a bass aggressively.

I grew up in the 60s and 70s and can say for sure that the prevailing assumption that women somehow couldn’t play rock guitar was all the evidence you needed that a great many men and boys were absolute dopes. Even then you could have gone down to the nearest music school and seen plenty of 15 year old girls shredding Paganini on their violins yet the belief persisted that somehow playing fast pentatonic riffs on a fretted instrument with built in amplification was just too much for them. It seems not to have occurred to us - and I include myself among the dopes - that you didn’t see more female rock guitarists because they didn’t want to subject themselves to the high degree of assholery that existed at the time. I’ll always admire Nancy Wilson tremendously for toughing it out and setting many of us jerks straight.

Seeing as how you’re a big KISS guy (like me), you should do a deep dive on Vinnie Vincents picking technique. I think he does a lot of hybrid picking. Honestly, the thing that has probably hampered Nancy's perception as a guitar player is her live tone on those Ovation acoustic/electric guitars. It's not about her not recording well in the studio. It's not about her not PLAYING those same parts the same or better in concert. It's about that piezo tone of Ovations. They lose the bottom end of a well-mic'ed "real" acoustic and the top end sounds plastic / fake. I have an Ovation Legend from about 2004 and was initially enamoured with it cuz it was so easy to plug into an amp and play "acoustic" loud. But it's NOT the same sound. That became painfully apparent after getting a D-35 in 2014. Haven't touched that Ovation since. Nancy as a player and writer has always been phenomenal. It's just when you predominately play acoustic parts in a full rock band to arena sized venues, you can't sit on a stool with a Martin in front of a Neumann -- you gotta be mobile and there really aren't good piezo solutions even today with other brands that really sound good.
