There's a BIG problem when coming to recommend a different midi controller than this one outside of the USA, specially speaking of south countries (LatAm countries specifically), and it's that every other midi controller I have checked that have similar price range in the USA (ie arturia keylab61) are HIGHLY overpriced. They easily can reach the double of the price of the Alesis VI61. So, the Alesis VI61 is really the only option we have at least in my country to have a device with some features like aftertouch for a good price.

Clicky clacky is a problem for mics over head but when you do direct recording its not an issue. The keys are springy and clicky clacky not as much as nektar ones though. Novation launchkey have very quiet keys. But i guess depends what type of vsts you are using with vi49. After touch i found actually more responsive on vi49 then any other keyboard i have played. Novation impulse for aftertouch you have to practically break the keys by putting on so much downward force before AT would even work.
@Johnmike2 жыл бұрын
I’d add it’s also an issue if you do any type of live production where close mics are involved…I do a lot of mixing and live streamed production tutorials…you need a quiet keybed for those type of things
@wilkopiano2 жыл бұрын
@@Johnmike absolutely. If thats your use case then novation sl61 is a great option i use that for that particular use case. Keybed is very quiet and full daw integration and pads and after touch. But you get what you pay for right?

@@wilkopiano definitely…I’ve had the SL61 for a year or so…I’ve actually got almost 2 dozen other midi controllers in my studio now and I’ve reviewed just about everyone of them on the market to date…so yea…I’m pretty confident about various keybeds from several different boards…

@@Johnmike you are my goto reviewer of keybeds. :) i am considering the akai mpk mini pro now 37 keys with aftertouch and proper pitchbend wheels instead of use less ribbons on arturias offering. As a pianist originally and organist i grew up to two different touch techniques so try not to blame my tools. I used to play yamaha electone organs and their after touch ribbons underneath the keybeds and were elitist and best on the market. Yamaha stagea range were the last organs they produced. Sadly a bygone era.

Thanks for a great honest review (saved me from a facebook marketplace purchase!). Do you have any recommendations on a not too $ MIDI controller with 5 pin MIDI out and a decent action that would be an ok choice for playing hammond organ songs (keys ok for slides, etc; I know that there doesn't seem to be a SINGLE waterfall key MIDI option on the market but there are lots of semi-weighted ones). I just need it for the keybed, no need for pads, drawbars, or any frills. Wanting to hook it to my fully weighted stage piano to trigger the organ patches (those keys are too heavy for organ). Any suggestions would be super appreciated!

Well it’s the best keyboard I ever had , I use MPC software and it feels like a MPC . Its one of those things that is terrible to one person but to another person it’s awesome . It’s like how people praise the MPK mini plus but I took mines back because I hated it .
@Anomaliayt Жыл бұрын
I picked this up a couple years back in brand new condition (no box) for £50. I thought it was a great deal, and has suited me well. £15 postage tho so £65 in total ($80). Maybe at retail price, there are better options.

Alesis keyboard was released around the same time as the Akai MPK249, I still have the MPK49 because there was not much point upgrading to the MPK 249 as the only real difference was the pads. I get the new Akai pads with My MPK mini mk3 anyway.

Pretty sure you have different velocity curve levels. Most of these keys have that, but that said if the curve isn't consistent across all keys... then it's not great for live playing

I TOTALLY hear what you're saying about the VI49. Still, for the price, I do believe it's not a bad beginner controller, as you said, for pads and raw songwriting. I have two...one for my studio, which, as a non-keyboardist, works fine with my DAW, and the other is for live gigs, where I plug in an Android tablet with a simple piano generating app, which does the trick. But you're right. Advanced players might not like it...

Who cares about clicky keys? I'm not using a mic to record a keyboard. Lol. But I do sing, so that might be an issue. I like the midi controller to be simple, so nothing is different from hardware to software. Marc Rebillet has been using the larger version and is what drew me to it.

I have the 49 and 61 models.... With the velocity curve, I have mines set to velocity curve 5 as you said.
