I was honored to spend 28 years officiating high school and college basketball. Some of my closest friends today are the coaches I met along that journey, there aren’t very many people that would put their livelihood in the hands of 16 to 18 year old young men and women. Sadly, I’ve seen firsthand that the majority of good coaches and sports officials leave due to parents.

Being a former collegiate athlete, I use to have high interest in coaching and being a referee. This is why I never did. Parents are the worst of the worst. Most of them never played a competitive sport, or no sport at all. Some have, didn't get far, and living their glory days through their kid which is a damn shame. And think they know everything what's best for their kid vs what coaches see and think.

@@InfiniteShake: If they care for their kids passionately, then sports can be be the perfect way to teach discipline, working within a team environment to reach a common goal, and most of all "RESPECT". No one is perfect, the coach will call some bad plays, you as a player will make some bad passes, miss some wide-open shots, miss assignments on defense, and the ref will miss some calls and make some bad calls. We are all human, so the day a player plays the perfect game and a coach, coaches the perfect game will be the day they can expect the perfect game from a ref..

I hated sitting w/ our team because many of ur parents were obnoxious. I found sitting alone on the opposite side of us the best way to enjoy the game. I don't understand how or why parents act the way they do. Then wonder why it gets trickled down to the kids. I always told the kids I coached and my own two kids, "the day you play the perfect game will be the day you expect a perfect game from a refs". The refs didn't exist to us, we simply played to have fun and compete.

I understand your worry but AAU was the best decision I ever made. Not only does it improve your skill by 10x but also fun. Why not just give it a shot. Stuff like this is kinda rare. Only super big tournaments are like this. Think like one in Orlando Florida, Miami Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, would have parents that act like that. But smaller ones within your city are not usually like that.

All sports should be outlawed. If parents want to act like children, bus them to the center of a state like Nebraska, and surround it with an iron fence and then give them a bunch of whiskey and pcp and let them go at it. Then sell the event on pay-per-view and balance the budget.
