ive never looked at people and thought of them as “beautiful” or “ugly”. everyone has such a different face and different ways of presenting themselves, how could i ever put them under a single denominator? it doesnt make sense. i like people based on how much i get along with them and thats it! but ive never thought of myself this way. all the things in this video ive told myself everytime i look in the mirror. i have braces, i hate my huge hips, i only do natural makeup so it doesnt seem as if i think that im pretty. i started sobbing when she washed her face and the voices stopped. i wish i could stop expecting myself to be perfect because i would never expect perfection from anyone else. it is a miserable feeling. thank you for this video, it hit me hard.

I'm an Asian-American guy. When I was about 14-16 yrs. old, a woman taking family pictures told me, and I remember the direct quote to this day, "you're freakishly tall." Mind you, I was like average 5'9". I was already super self-conscious because I felt like I was an awkward person. In my opinion at the time, being tall on top of this would make everything worse. I ended up severely damaging my health because I was constantly drinking caffeine in order to stunt my own growth (typically in the form of extra caffeinated soda and energy drinks). Primarily due to this one comment. The irony is, when I grew up. I realized that men are harshly judged for their height, and many women actually romantically seek out tall men. There are a lot of men and boys silently suffering as well. I feel as if, especially nowadays and especially amongst East Asians, we get lost into our respective gendered echo chambers. I don't want girls or women to suffer in negativity or to be the cause of negativity. There are millions whom the world is hard for, and I want to use this opportunity to reach across the isle. I hope you can grow with the women in your life while never forgetting the sacrifices the men in your life make. We males experience just as much pain in this colonized world. To the people who may attack me for this comment; with accusations of usurping something made exclusively for women. Please note that this is one comment (made on a public video mind you) out of the dozens made by or in the perspective of women. Not feeling appreciated for your looks is universal. It would be hypocritical to stand for equity, but ignore anything that challenges your world view. Thank you!

I really love that you included "your body figure is perfect if you are in foreign country" because people like to say things like that as if it isn't still a judgement on how valid or legitimate one's body is. Our body doesn't have to be perfect !! It doesn't need to be anything. These statements are still contributing to these types of negative self image.

One comment that genuinely crushed me was when a family member one day suddenly noticed the asymmetry in my face and they kept mentioning how strange it was and asking if I was ill, they even mentioned it to my siblings and again at the dinner table asking others to look at my face closely to see if i looked strange. This shattered me, truly. I already knew my face was asymmetrical, it has been a relentless insecurity of mine for every single day for the past 5 years and I've been trying so hard to build my self confidence back up and try to feel at ease with my body for once but then that family member came and tore everything I built in seconds. I love that person to bits and I know they love me so much as well and had no ill will but their comment left a lasting imprint on me.

This video came to me at the right time, bc we are women, they think that our only function is to be beautiful, beautiful for the consumption and opinion of others, when we put ourselves in environments that demand attention to ourselves we are not seen for our personalities, talents, intelligence or any other characteristic, it's an unfortunate situation and one that urgently needs change, so I am grateful people like you exist cuz i forget sometimes, you deserve to be authentic and to be seen for u, instead of "beauty" being the only "interesting" part of you, because you are more, much more, you are infinite. First, words over images is an idea that has intrigued me for a long time... I have always wanted to photograph a poet covered in his or her words... Two, you took a negative and turned it into inspiration... are you a Wizard? And three, your use of light, color, and pacing kept me thoroughly engaged... sometimes I have focus issues... Wow, you are a good storyteller... meaning, I finished watching with my head full of questions and wanting to see what else you've done.... it's shameful that people feel so comfortable projecting their fears, judgment, and hang-ups onto others... didn't mean to leave you a massive comment... I really just wanted to say thanks for sharing a good story.

Not a woman, but as someone who used to have body image issues and went through a period of disordered eating, the thing that helped me most was adopting a 'close enough is good enough' mindset (in regard to my weight). I literally used to keep a microsoft excel spreadsheet in which I recorded the exact calories from everything I ate in a day and had a mental breakdown if I went over my arbitrarily imposed limit. Needless to say I was absolutely miserable haha. Nowadays I've let go a bit and just try to eat healthily, I've got more fat than I did before but also more muscle. Letting go of what other people think is the key, but it's also the hardest part. What helped me was to think about why I was doing things, whether I was living the way I was for myself or for someone else. I think living for other people is nice until said other people start having stupid and unrealistic expectations on who YOU should be. It's your life and living it according to the desires of everyone else is going to leave you with nothing but regrets in the years to come. If people need you to be miserable to be happy, their happiness isn't worth it/.

I like how you use your camera at the end, it's like you are looking at the mirror while the viewers of this video is the mirror watching you. The way you acted toward "the mirror" is so genuine, natural that it really feels like you are standing in front of one instead of a camera. This feels like you are conveying the message "everyone around you is your mirror, who you are is what reflecting upon them". If you must change yourself for someone's gaze that means you have been trapped in their mirror. Nowadays celebrities and influencers are very lack of unique appearance since all of them want to follow the same type of face and body standard, and those who want to break the mold tend to get bashed from those who despite originality. I just wanna say you have a very unique face and appearance, and personality too. I think you have heard this a thousand times but I hope you stay true to who you are and don't the ugliness in other change you and make you feel like you must change yourself just to please them

As I grew up in an Asian culture, a lot of the comments I have received were actually from my parents or aunties uncles, they didn’t mean to mock me or be mean to me, I guess to them they were just being honest and felt like by giving me opinions like this they were helping me to navigate life in an easier way. Even though I knew their intention meant well, what they said still hurt me and affected my confidence… It’s hard to change them because it’s almost in the gene so the only thing I could do is to change myself and learn to embrace myself for being who I am!♥️

I really loved this video, the cinematography was so creative and the message is beautiful! By the way, the first thing I thought before reading the title on the thumbnail was “she’s pretty” :) It’s sad to see the comments you have gotten from people because they simply aren’t true. I think you’re perfect the way you are. Beauty standards are horrible, especially for us women. Beauty standards also constantly change. That’s because in reality, there is no one type of beauty. There are no certain features that dictate a person’s beauty. There are beautiful people all over the planet. All of different ethnicities and races. Society just tries to make beauty one thing but it fails to do that every time because beauty simply cannot be one thing. At the end of the day, what truly matters about a person is their character. Like you said “I don’t want to be pretty, I want to be myself” I really resonated with that message. It’s exhausting dealing with what society wants you to be or look like. I just want to live life peacefully and comfortably as myself. I want to be known for who I am, not what I look like or whether or not I am deemed beautiful.
@hannahmiao4 ай бұрын
Awww thank you very much!🥹♥️♥️ a lot of time the people who said those comments had good intentions because they believed they were helping me to understand the reality, it’s just that they didn’t realize what they said could really hurt other people’s feeling… I knew they were not laughing at me or mocking me but still it’s a thing in Asian culture🥲 so it took me quite some time to actually heal and had the courage to share this video! People are mean and judgy for no reason. I usually laugh in their face when they tell me I look homeless. You are you. And you are beautiful

Aww thank youuu🥹♥️🫶🏻 tbh Hollywood is probably more accepting in terms of body sizes than in HK🥹, here is kinda like, if you’re not skinny you’re very unlikely to succeed.

Were most of these comments from women? It just seems so odd. When I say this, it's not just because I'm a man, but you honestly look like perfection to me. Literally. I'm shocked that people have actually said anything like this to you before. The idea people have of others is truly only a reflection of how they see themselves and how the speak to themselves, my fullest empathy goes out to them too.
