“Pretty” is such a dangerous word for young girls. It either becomes your identity or this unattainable goal you’ll never achieve.
@arseen33
@arseen33 4 жыл бұрын
I agree. When I was going through this I realized that if I tried to talk about the way it felt to be "pretty" or "beautiful" or what it meant to be those things, but I couldn't use those words, I ended up just talking about feeling loved and important to someone. Cherished, heard, seen. Appreciated. I didn't want beauty, I just wanted to be loved. I think when we're little we have dolls that we love and figures to look up to that we love, and we're told that they're pretty. When every image of a girl that's loved or "worth protecting" is a beautiful princess, things get conflated imo.

Omg so bloody true! I feel like being pretty has become all people see me for and so I act in a way that makes me think I need to focus on only that for my self worth. I am catching myself as much as I can these days and trying to remind myself who I am is the most important thing and that I'm not some object for the way that I look

I agree but disagree. Wanting to be pretty is so painful sometimes. But when someone calls YOU pretty your on cloud 9 especially when your so young. So the word pretty can be a painful concept or a wonderful compliment

Pretty Thing I understand what you’re saying but I think that’s the problem. Someone complimenting something as arbitrary as your appearance shouldn’t mean that much. It’s too much pressure and emphasis placed on something that has nothing to do with WHO you are, it’s just what you look like.

Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but the way I interpreted this is that at a young age it is instilled in us that our looks are tied in with our worth. This is why in today’s society, people praise the idea that nobody is unnatractive, when we should be teaching the idea that even if you are ‘unnatractive’, its okay! Everyone deserves respect. There is so much more to life than trying to look appealing to strangers. Your appearance shouldn’t hold any power over you or determine how you live. Like Peniel said “Beauty is futile” because no matter if you are pretty, average, or absolutely hideous, your happiness and how you live your life is up to you.

Wonderful insight 💛🙌 This message needs to be taught to children before growing up.. My sister and husband told me "Don't call little girls pretty and gush and always say 'oh you're so CUTE! ' all the time." This teaches them that they will be praised for being pretty. Instead, build them up internally! More like the way we encourage boys. Tell girls that they are SMART, BRAVE.. and praise them for being KIND as well. 😊 I'd love to see this teaching catch a wave in our culture.

I remember her energy was so outgoing and confident she didn’t put other girls down and when she complimented someone it really did sound sincere, not just trying to be friendly. Anyways I later saw her at a talent show with her parents and her dad just seemed cool and nice I’m guessing her parents really showed her her worth idk though I never asked her what gave her such high self esteem

Life has taught females the harsh truth again and again when it comes to being “pretty”. Many people ask why beauties go with the beast? Because being reduced to solely your looks on both sides of the spectrum teaches women that the only truly diserable traits are faithfulness, responsibility, intelligence, friendship and kind-hearted ness. But men often can’t recognise these treats without a pretty packaging.

Romans 1:26-28 (KJV) For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: [27] And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. [28] And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Idk what is going on in these comments but here’s my opinion. God may have not intended for women to be with women and men with men, but you should BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF (one of the goals that I listed). It’s okay to do things a bit different. The world won’t end if you chose to love in an untraditional way. Yes, times are changing and so are our minds and feelings. Yeah in October when I was 18 I was saving myself for marriage. This guy came along and was the first guy to ever talk to me so I believed every sweet thing he told me. Unfortunately he took my virginity and started treating me like actual trash like as if I was nothing. He’d tell me he didn’t have time to hangout with me but he had no job and wasn’t in school so he had more time than I did and I still was trying to find time for him in my schedule. Anyways, moral of the story is they will say they have feelings for you and make you feel comfy. I’ve still never been on a date or had a boyfriend. He didn’t even kiss me on my mouth or show me any affection. You don’t have to wait for marriage but at least wait for a decent or the right guy or you could be like me. I’m 19 and feel lost and he made me hate myself and my body way more than I did before. I feel guilty and still cry myself to sleep for letting him disrespect my body and soul. I was even the S word from this.. Very very depressed. Also make sure you are comfortable with your body and confident before sharing something like that with someone else.

Why are looks so important? Why can't we call a woman brave, courageous or intelligent before calling her pretty. Even people who are average looking according to society's standards MUST be called beautiful because that is apparently the MOST important thing. Everything else she has achieved in life comes after. We should teach young girls to be confident in their looks and also be confident when people Don't appreciate their looks, because they should know they are more than that.

There was a study done on girls and how they perform in school Etc. They discovered that girls in kindergarten through second grade perform higher than boys and way higher in general, because social stigma hasn't been placed on them yet, so they aren't afraid of others perception of them, or to be outspoken, and have confidence... However, they found that drastically alters/lowers once societies standards for them set in and they've reached a certain age and have experienced the world more... I believe there are even videos on this study on yt.

In a past relationship I’ve been in, I dated a guy who told me straight to my face he didn’t find me “conventionally atttractive” and I was shattered. I changed my makeup style, I changed the way I did my hair, I changed too much of who I really was to be more attractive to him. However, we continued to date, it was pretty toxic and my self esteem and confidence was at an all time low when I was with him. We broke it off 3 months in. I’m now currently in a relationship where my man doesn’t care about only looks. He loves me and respects me for who I am as a person and helps me grow as a person. Looks are the last thing to worry about. He taught me that what really matter is to be a genuine person and to live your life to become a better you, it’s not about being appealing to other people. If people don’t like you for who you are, then whatever. I’m so much happier now and I feel beautiful when I’m with him, even without make up. 😊

I mean it’s not really social media though. Yes, it is very prominent and sometimes toxic but there were other things in the past that affected body image like social media does now (TV and movies with unrealistically pretty actors and actresses, magazines with gorgeous models, etc). Girls have been taught that their attractiveness is their most important feature for centuries (to conform to male desires). Look at Snow White (1937) for example. The prince didn’t really know her, and he only saw her as beautiful. The whole film is based on the fact that she is beautiful. Even then looks were used to qualify a girl. Pale skin, rosy cheeks, being skinny, having a “great chest”, having soft and straight hair, not having a “round” face etc, were all attributes that girls/women would strive for, either through makeup, exercise, or really weird stuff (u don’t want to know). So it’s not really social media brainwashing us to believe these things. These things have been around for centuries, based on the male desire to have a beautiful wife that would be pleasant to look at while procreating children with good genetics (maybe that’s not* the reasoning now 😂 but that’s how it began!)

I’ve felt insecure about myself since I was in middle school. I noticed how people were treating me vs. everyone else now matter how nice I was to them. In high school I was actually physically and cyber bullied which made me transfer schools and even now I don’t feel 100% okay with myself I had to let go a lot of negative friends and negative people in my life and I’ve slowly started to be more open about my appearances cause truth is I’m living for myself and no one else so to hell with those that want to call me names. P.S. I think you’re really beautiful and this video helped me a lot ❤️

Thank you so much for saying this. I was comparing myself to others in damaging ways before I even realised what was doing and it went on for years. I’m trying my best to undo that but it’s become natural and automatic whenever I see another person. It’s sad because I’ve seen other young girls doing the exact same thing and we all valued our looks so much that quite honestly I’m sure we had no idea who we were, and I see others all the time falling into the same trap. We should be striving to be talented, smart and creative before we are pretty. We should strive to be successful like our idols, not look like them physically. Society is harmful to a young girls mind in so many ways, I’m just glad I’ve realised.

In my opinion, I think that everyone is beautiful. It’s just society that has twisted beauty standards. I’d feel so much more honoured to have the affection of someone who is smart, funny, kind and has a great personality rather than someone who is just ‘pretty’. Be confident in yourself, love yourself and don’t let anyone make you feel like you have something wrong with you. To anyone who is reading this, you’re beautiful 💕

I was lucky enough to have been to an all girls school for my 12 years of school. There was never any drama. Everyone was friendly and nice , we always brought eachother up. And I didn't have a phone until i was in 11th grade so for all my childhood and almost all of my teenage years I never worried about how i looked since i wasn't aware of the society's beauty standards. At the time i hated that i didn't have a phone or that i went to an all girls school but now I'm super grateful. Although now after i went to college and noticed how everyone is so damn beautiful I felt insecure, but I'm starting to accept and love my self again , as everyone should 💜

I found similarities in many people's physical appearance even if they are quiet a stretch and when I tell people about that, they will think that I insulted them by comparing them with other people. So I started complimenting them after saying that or I won't say anything about their similarities.

For the popular girl story, it is soo relatable for me. There was a girl in my class that had the same name as me and she was a lot prettier than me and I was the “loud annoying girl” and I was known as “the other Sofia”. It kind of hurt. All the guys liked her and I was sooo self conscience that anything I did I compared myself to her. But I finally realized, we are different and that is fine. I am beautiful even if I don’t look like her. We don’t have to be the same person everyone is different I am my own person so I gotta love myself and own who I am. And more ppl should realize that💛

Funny that my name is Sofia and I also had the same experience. I was a new Brazilian girl in an American High School and people would be" are you really Brazilian?" since I wasn't the stereotype "pretty and hot Brazilian girl". One day another Brazilian girl came to school, her name was Sofia and she was beautiful, at her first day everyone would want to talk to her and be her friend. Even though she was a nice person I always caught myself comparing to her, and at some point (I regret this) hating her. At the time, it was like a punch of my stomach to see how differently people at school treated her just because she was pretty and I felt like trash since I didn't had the same "positive experience" when I started attending school. But now, I realize that I'm my own person and I have my own beauty. I'm happy to see ppl in this comments realizing that too 💜

"I just want to be pretty'' this is so real... I say that to myself all the time and I feel bad for being envious of other girls like " why can't I be as pretty as she?". And yes, I know beauty it's a social construction, but I still feel that way 😥 I have amazing friends and didn't really care about this until now, it's sad because I'd never wanted to be that superficial, like beauty it's all that matters. One of my best friends used to say that any time she feels insecure about her appearance she remembers herself that it's a few of her parents and ancestors on her, and that makes her who she is, it's really kind... But I don't know, sometimes I feel like it's unfair that some people are soo pretty and then I feel stupid because it is a little stupid 😥

Totally agree. My low self esteem has made me do so many things that were out of character and that’s I’ve regretted. All to be viewed as pretty, and in the end, I never really felt pretty. No matter what people would say. I think with time you come to realize that physical beauty is meaningless and it doesn’t bother you as much, but like everything else in life, it takes time. Thank you for making this video it is so valuable especially in these times where so many young girls suffer from the pain of feeling not good enough because of constant exposure to social media. 🙏☀️

This made me happy that I've never been in a relationship before. I'm almost 17 and I've always felt that something is wrong with me because I never really cared about getting attention from boys. My friends are talking to like 5 guys at the same and I used to think I should do it as well. But I then realized I don't need anyone's opinion or attention because I'm so confident in myself and I know I'm beautiful. Sure, we all have days where we don't feel good about ourselves but that's completely normal.

But honestly, isn't there a saying that a sincere compliment from a woman to another woman is even more worth than one from a man? Because women know the struggle of looking pretty and well put together all the time, so they're better at recognizing true beauty when they see it :) But I know how you feel, though I've never been hit on by a Lesbian, I occasionally do attract very very feminine guys who I first suspected were gay. I could be wrong though because of course not every guy that's acting quite feminine is automatically gay. But these particular guys just gave off these vibes to me, so I was even more surprised when one of them actually asked me out.
