My wife'sBBS02 came out of the box wth the same current percentages attributed to each power level (1-9) which meant that it was producing 600 Watts (12.48Amps : 52% of 24A) in power level 1. It was a bit of a beast on the first test ride and clocked 35mph on the flat! Thought this setup might scare her so set max current to 20 amps an toned down power levels 1-9 now (2 years later) have current % at 0=0, 1= 8%(1.6A), 2=11%(2.2A), 3=14(2.8A), 4=17%(3.4A), 5=30%(6A), 6=50%(10A), 7=70%(14A), 8=90%(18A) and max 9=100%(20A) Not if you multiply Amps(A) by nominal battery volts (48) you will have the power for each power level setting which equates to 1 =77W, 2=105W, 3=134W, 4=163W, 5=288W, 6=480W, 7=672W, 8=864W and 9=960W. My kit came out of the box with a much softer set of lower power levels and have now ended up setting as per wifes. Both have been utterly reliable and regularly achieve 70 miles range fron a Hailong 48V 17.5A (840Wh) battery. Throtles have been changed from "by displays command" to power level 8 so there will always be up to 864Watts of powet to get you out of trouble. We use them mostly on motorhome holidays where we can charge both batteriesin an evening using free solar power. Great series of videos that inspired me to build our e-bikes. Wife said she wasn't old enough for an e-bike,but its now her most treasured posession!

Thanks, I have a 250 watt Bafang, max allowed in UK and most of Europe. I have tuned it to overpower it in the higher assistance levels and less for level routes, even the 250 watt version you can sometimes be surprised when the power kicks in. My ammeter often shows a current of 800 watts when climbing off road, and even after 3 years the motor and battery are fine.

Hello Luke! I watched several of your videos before upgrading my bike with a bbs02b 750W. Thank you! Keep the good work! Everybody has a different biking style. I am a fan of efficient use of energy which comes down to 3 principles (1. Bike in a way so that you almost don't use the brakes. 2. Make use of gravity. 3. Don't be too fast unless you need to). All my speed limits are set to 100% (this is not what affects efficiency, your biking style does). My starting current is set to 7% (was at 20% first but then starts felt too energetic). I eventually concluded that 9 levels are too many for my style, so I switched to 5 levels, set as: 10%, 20%, 30%, 60%, 100%. I use mostly levels 1,2,3, very rarely - level 4 and almost never - level 5. On my commuting daily trip there are hills but not very steep. If readers of this nice channel would like to try my settings and share opinions, I would be pleased. Cheers everybody!

I also dropped my 750w BBS02 down to make it smoother. I ride a fair amount in the city and just crossing the street was kind of a ridiculous exercise. If I were to buy another one, I'd probably get a 500w version - it would be plenty of power. I also got a 19 AH battery and with I'd never gotten something so big and heavy. I've never used more than about 60% in a single ride, even in the Alps. This video really helped me understand how to accomplish this, but I used the Speed Android app and my phone.

I did something similar to my sabvoton build. but what i did change was that i nerfed my phase amps a lot rather than battery amps. before i had great acceleration and could go up any hill but my controller was hammering my battery at any speeds. after i lowered phase amps it uses a lot less battery at lower speeds but i still have decent mid t high end power and speed. it moves pretty slowly from a standstill or going uphill at low speeds but then thats countered by pedalling through it. I almost doubled my range on my route to work (its an offroad footpath with about 0.5 miles of road at the end)

Hey Mik, thanks for sharing! Unfortunately it's not that simple. Those who chose BBS02 are looking for something that torque sensing cannot offer, like the possibility to arrive at work not sweating, or to overcome some leg disability... but they still don't want to risk their lives in order to have those possibilities 😅 at least, with the 750W version. of course if someone doesn't need constant assistance, torque sensing bikes and kits are perfect without any need to tweak!
@novideohereatall

I modified this to keep a constant speed with varying power levels. Great! Thank you so much for this. Way better! In detail. I tend to ride with the same cadence no matter what. Since you adjust your speed with gears, not cadence (as lower cadences are less "efficient" for your legs), I set PAS 1-8 speed to 65 (upper comfortable limit for me). PAS 9 is 100% speed. This feels much more natural, as I can pedal as fast as I want, but control the assistance. If I want less RPM I change to a higher gear with lower PAS. My settings are as follows: 0: 0, 0 1: 11, 65 2: 24, 65 3: 36, 65 4: 49, 65 5: 62, 65 6: 75, 65 7: 87, 65 8: 100, 65 9: 100, 100 With throttle set to current and PAS 9, I can quickly overtake without spamming the PAS adjuster. The first setting is great for a little push when cruising, but you don't really need any more to keep your speed. Set the speed to a percentage to where you're just bearly uncomfortable. Above a certain cadence you start to loose power, so there is a sweet spot (I would say between 60-90rpm) 65% of 130rpm should be around 87rpm.

I use 56v 14s 2p battery packs on my 48v Bafang BBS02 750W. I've even used 60v packs but it can shut down for Error #07 overvoltage on the display if anything going over 61.5v as it will flag a 07 error. After the initial 2018 Bafang purchase and 1500 miles as of Oct. 2023, I may have burned out one of the MOSFETs (error code #12) current sensor abnormality. I don't know for sure if it was overvoltage that caused it but I might downsize the wattage next time just to keep it safer on the 56v batteries.

@LukeLorusso Жыл бұрын
Hi William, I'm happy to be helpful About shifting, the only suggestion I can give is this: you can shift while pedaling, if you do it at the right moment. (works only with Bafang, not with Tongsheng) When pedaling, the motor will increasingly provide some Watt, you can see it from the display. Let's say it goes up to 750W... at a certain moment, when the right speed is reached for that level, the Watt provided will be reduced, leaving more responsibility to your legs. THIS is the right moment to shift while pedaling, cause the chain will just sustain your legs' force, like on a normal bike. As soon as you shift, or half a second later, the motor will start to help you again! Try this out 👍

I have installed 2 Bafang 750 mid drive kits now and neither of them have EVER made my bike wheelie or go out of control. Recently I detuned both bikes to more gradually deliver power on the onset of peddling. Mostly to lessen the feel of the assist. But, not for the over dramatized wheelie or out of control thing. Not even on setting 9 will they do wheelies. You have the 42 tooth front sprocket? If you do, and this is probably why you are doing wheelies. Most riders should be using 52t front sprockets as the smaller sprockets are for mountain bike set-ups.

The great advantage of the BBS02 is the extent to which its characteristics can be adjusted to meet the needs of the rider. Changing power levels and rates has a dramatic effect on the how the bike reacts to rider inputs. I also use an an Eggrider that offers the ability to not only have 2 separate provides but also to make changes essentially anywhere. I found that the process of fine tuning required many changes and took a good deal of experimenting on the road - ideal with the Eggrider. However you do it, you will not get the full benefit of the BBS02 without controller tuning...

I also wanted this. And so I did. Change the Speed Limit to the maximum level you can comfortably pedal. Mine is 65% (about 85-90rpm). Then just change to a linear current increase for each PAS mode (except for 9 which is 100% power at 100% rpm). This way, you can pedal as fast as you'd like (or slow) and adjust the PAS to get more or less assistance. I am however considering doing a logarithmic power curve instead of a linear one, mostly to give me more choice for lower power levels. Over about 500W you won't really add anything, so any PAS level above this is pretty much redundant. I'm thinking something like. Power in watts. 75W 130W 200W 280W 350W 500W 750W Max.

@@garyfisk370 Hello Gary. Yes i got that wrong didnt I. My BBS02 is now set to speed and that seems to give the smoothest throttle. If you try 'speed' under no load (with the rear wheel lifted of the ground) then the thumb throttle is really smooth and variable, incremental, progressive, whatever the word is, but under load as in normal riding this is less obvious but still seems smoother than using 'current'. My advice is try both. Conversely on my BBSHD I have it set to current as that seems to give the better response in actual riding. (BBSHD with the rear wheel lifted under no load and using 'speed' then the throttle seems really controllable from barely spinning to full speed as you move the thumb throttle but this doesnt translate to actual riding when the motor is under load). So try both.

I believe you are right and wrong at the same time. You seem technical so to share... Air drag grows at the square of velocity Power level required grows at the 'cube of velocity" Translation: You want an exponential power delivery curve. You are right in that the factory programming of your BBS02 was way off for good power modulation at low speed. True But, I am a BBSHD 52V 19.2 amp-hr owner on two bikes with 1700 watt maximum. 58.8v (battery full charge) X 30 amp = 1700 watts Yes, I rarely use the 1700 watts but I do 'sometimes' for riding 30mph+ for short periods out on fast roads. Using the Bafang Configuration tool... I start with very incremental lower power settings for over 1/2 of my power settings...I use 5 power setting. Then I ramp up to 70% power for power setting 4 and 100% power at power setting 5. 95% of my riding is in power settings 0-3. I program power setting zero to apply 10 percent of power. I do like to race on occasion. I also have had elite road cyclists...no motor hold my wheel at 30 mph so I like to have power to ride fast. What most users will appreciate is 'granularity' at lower power settings to fine tune power delivery at speeds from say 0-24mph or so. Above that because power required is the cube of velocity, you want exponentially more power to propel the bike faster. So power delivery, again in my opinion, should be non-linear, not linear. So you are correct in more gradation at lower speeds but as you get into higher power assist, this should not be linear 'in my opinion'. More of your power settings should be smaller spaced at lower assist levels with a much bigger jump at highest power settings. My opinion. Big power is a good thing on an ebike 'when needed'. But also as your video suggests, so it granularity of power settings at lower speeds to make the bike more docile and natural as you say at speeds that are most commonly ridden. A very good video and wanted to share my opinion only. Completely agree the Bafang Configuration Tool should be used to reprogram the Bafang controller. I also like having my throttle be 100% available in each power setting....and slower pedal assist ramp up as you mentioned. Cheers from America where speed is scrutinized less than Europe where you have a 15mph speed limit on ebikes. Police in America could really care less about ebike power if we ride respectfully which I always do. I ride to the speed of my surroundings and don't abuse the power I have. PS and what fabio said below. 100% speed for each power assist level. Reason is, let the power available limit speed and not put an artificial ceiling on speed and limit power assist.

Hi Luke, thanks for sharing! If you have an Android phone, take a look at "Speeed" by Marcin Kompa. Yes, spelled with three "E"s. I've used it for a couple of months on a BBS02B and a BBSHD. It does everything the Windows app can do, only you can do it anywhere. I think it's really awesome. I'm not affiliated with Bafang, Mr. Kompa or Android, in case you are wondering.

Hey Herald! Thanks for sharing. I actually tried that app and surprisingly, even if I changed just a couple of values, that app also changed parameters that I didn't intend to change... I don't remember which one but that made me think. I know it cause I read the values with my PC after flashing from the app. I'll stay with the PC method, also cause I don't change settings that much, but it's surely a good on-the-go alternative :)

@@LukeLorusso That happened to me, as well. In my case, my mistake was not using the "READ ALL" button on the "Home" tab before doing any editing. It wrote the apps default values, which I had edited instead of the controller values. Aside from this incident, I never had any trouble. Usability isn't perfect, to be sure, but I think you have to do that on the Windows app as well. Now, I usually edit the values in the *.el files or load the *.el files and edit them in the app before flashing, so I might have missed unreliable reading from controller incidents. I also only use "WRITE ALL" from the "home" tab, not the "write" buttons from the detail screens, because I am uncertain if they write everything or just the values from the specific tab.

Under the throttle section of the programing app, you can change the pedal assist setting from "given by display command" to 9 or whatever level you prefer to lock your throttle level at. This way your throttle is always set to 9 (100%) without affecting any of the peddle assist %.

Ciao Luke. Hai qualche suggerimento? Grazie!
@LukeLorusso
@LukeLorusso 2 жыл бұрын

Thanks for sharing valuable information. Do you ever have to worry about the legality of 750w? I'm more worried about accidents and insurance claims than occasional police checks. Here in Austria also the max power is limited to 600w and the continuous power to 250w. I'm not even sure if limiting the power and speed in the controller would make it legal. I'm going to receive my 750w kit soon and don't care much anyway.

Hey thanks for your question! Where I live it's possible to have powerful ebikes (mopeds, up to a certain W limit) if you comply with the rules: having a licence plate, driving licence, insurance and wear a certified helmet. Unfortunately, if a custom 750W build isn't legal in some places, downgrading it won't make it suddently legal... I believe those motors are made for cargo bikes, and that's why they are so powerful. If someone really wants to use one of them for personal transportation, here I show some options to make it "closer" to a less powerful kit in terms of behaviour and personal safety... but not in terms of the law.

My 02 is set up to be "class 1" and I have a tiny 6AH battery so 18 amps was more than enough to maintain 20 mph on flats and still climb hills with ease plus I get better range from my tiny battery. An added benefit is that at 18 amps the 02 is virtually bullet proof reliable.
