I own a 2022 extra cab SR. I love the Tacoma but they should not have gone away from the suicide doors on the extra cab. The doors allow for great access to behind the seat. They also eliminated the rear jump seats, which I have frequently used. You really didn’t mention this. I also have the 4 cylinder which has decades of proven reliability. The MPG is interesting. Base 2wd is 20/26. That is identical to my old 2006 Tacoma base 2wd with the 2.7 and 4 speed automatic. This new base 4 cyliner turbo makes more hp and tq than the old 3.4 V6 which was rated at 17/19 in my old 2002 TRD Prerunner. That thing would barely get 16 or 17 on the highway. I used to think it was dumb that Tacoma didn't chase the big towing numbers, but not anymore. If you need to tow more than 6500 lbs you are going to hate doing it with a midsized. My GX470 tows 6500 and I use it to get a 6500 lb boat from the storage to the lake, but its a few miles in town. I tried to tow it on the freeway once and while it was rated to do it, the truck and I did not like it. Same reason you don't buy an F150 to tow 12k regularly, you step up to a f250. Occasionally? Go for it. Regularly? you wont like it.

That’s why I tell people all the time the 2.7l engine is really all you need. Once you get over what the engine can handle the frame and suspension are pretty much over weight and things start getting pretty dicey when it’s something you’re trying to tow every day. If your just making random videos towing 6000lbs over a hill once or twice like these guys it can do it sure but even me the guy that comes into the junkyard with 1800 lbs of scrap on the Tacoma rated for 1100lbs would not want to be towing heavy in this all the time. 3500lbs is more than enough for me. Heck I got a welding trailer that’s around there in weight and I will say the 2.7l pulls it fine but you feel it a lot in the frame and suspension and they don’t change when you get the v6.

Trucks have gotten too big and too expensive. I'm looking forward to the smaller Stout which will hopefully still offer good truck performance and a much lower price. Great video, I really appreciate seeing a review of the normal base model. I really like the extra cab configuration. I am so tired of nearly every new truck being a giant four door crew cab and trying to imitate being an SUV. That being said, I wish that Toyota offered an even more basic truck. I don't need all these driver assist features. I don't care about Android Auto, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, etc. Just give me a basic affordable truck that you can actually treat like a truck. My biggest complaint is that I can't stand the infotainment and gauge cluster on this truck. I hate touch screens in vehicles, especially trucks, with a passion especially when they have barely any physical controls. Like the newer Chevy Silverado I've driven at work, Toyota has gone and pulled out all of the physical controls except for the volume knob which drives me crazy. My work truck is a 2018 F-150 and not being able to operate the touchscreen with winter gloves on is really frustrating. At least on that truck I have physical buttons for switching radio presets. I still prefer my personal 2010 F-150 with standard buttons for controlling everything over any new truck I've driven though

This truck is beyond a joke. The base model should be aimed at a very specific group of people mostly fleet owners, who want the basics. They want function over form. They don’t need ridiculously complicated turbocharged engines or multi speed transmissions beyond five or six. Emphasis should be based on and focused on reliability, durability, and long-term use and of course affordability, which is the most important thing. This truck will hit about $40,000 out the door which is just absurd.

There are always people saying they want one, but never seem to show up to actually buy one. In my opinion, the very significant price increase, higher diesel prices, DEF requirements, high maintenance costs and unreliability of the emissions systems all conspire to put a fork in diesel light truck and van sales. Sales of light truck and van diesel equipped models just don’t happen very often. So they are generally absent on dealer sales lots. Or if one or two are available, they tend to be slow sellers.

I think it is appropriate that Toyota is keeping the tow rating around 6500 lbs maximum for the mid-size, which in reality is probably not that safe to tow that much. Towing more it is wise to go with the wider track and heavier Tundra. Toyota is playing it safe rather than risking their customers safety in the mid-size towing wars.
@westcoastplinkin6559 Жыл бұрын
People buying mid size trucks aren't towing much either. I know I have never towed in my life and I doubt I ever will need to. And even if I was looking at towing, I would NOT be looking at any midsize or even full size at all. I would go straight to the heavy duty trucks like Ram 2500 with cummins. So towing capabilities in mid size trucks isnt' a big deal to me. I utilize the bed of these trucks a lot more.
@geoffmooregm Жыл бұрын
Agreed. Our highway was shut down because a Tacoma owner had his truck bed loaded, a car topper boat on top of that, and was then towing a travel trailer probably around 5000lbs. No doubt he got out of control going down the hill. He rolled everything over, the trailer broke free, and split open, creating a massive debris field. After 2+ hours of waiting, we drove by, and the crews were picking up pots and pans and using his boat like a dumpster😂. The truck was on a flat bed completely destroyed. The trailer was basically a frame with the floor and a bit of wall material still in tact. The owners appeared ok, they were standing talking to police. Tow ratings are merely the load that the truck can oull and pass the SAE J2807 (which is voluntary) test at. It does not account for the type of triler you are towing. A flatbed with a cement block strapped down at just the right spot on the trailer to give perfect weight distribution and no wind resistance doesn't tell the whole story.

I can’t believe they eliminated the rear door. That just kills it for me. I have tons of things I need to carry and have it all laid out to be easy access on my access cab. I’m also very surprised at the mpg ratings! I do as good if not better with my access cab sr5 v6. So I guess this is all about emissions. Nothing about better mpg. And prices seem a little insane. I paid $38,000 for my sr5 v6 4x4. Seems like the upgrade is making them much more expensive. Oh well. I’m sure they will get it dialed in on a few years just like they always do. I’ve had 2 gen 1s. 3 gen 2s and 2 gen 3s. All have been excellent. But in the beginning of the generations I’ve always had a bit more trouble than near the end of the cycle. That’s how Toyota works. Major change, then dial it in. So I’m sure exciting things to come.

Living here in North Carolina where rust isn’t an issue for most of us, we have the option of keeping our older vehicles on the road much longer than our rust belt friends. I find it interesting that the newer mid- size trucks have the same power and torque as if not more and as much if not more payload and towing capability as my almost 25 year old “full size “ truck.
