Exchange the lead weight for a chrome hex bar w/single hook. The fish seem more attracted to the lighter colored bait. Try a rubber spider style skirt and a stinger hook? So much information in the video crazy thanks Daniel

I know this is eight months old, but where we fish in Canada, we use a short piece of small diameter nylon rope with lead shot inside, ( just melt the end closed with a lighter) then attach a swivel & use as your weight. It slides through the rocks instead of getting stuck....

Try adding a small strip of squid to your swimbait hook, I do that on the east coast, it gives them flavor so they grab and hold instead of spitting the lure out. Great videos!

Great perspective at the risk of losing that underwater camera! Thanks for uploading this video. It helps to see how fish react to things being presented to them and how we can improve on the terminal tackle to use and what baits are more appealing to the target species. I don’t know if adding a little Pro cure scent may entice a better bite on those swim baits, but you could have had some nice lingcod or halibut fillets!

When I made underwater footages with a similar setup, I attached the camera on the main line, and used a thinner line for the weight and/or the lures. (This way if something snags you can just break it off and you can save the camera ;) )

Great footage. A few pieces of feedback: don’t set the hook on a ling, just let it eat it and when the rod loads up start reeling through the hookset all the way to the boat. You just yank it from their mouths otherwise. When you feel a rockfish on the flies, don’t immediately reel, leave it there for a few seconds so you can double up. Use smaller hooks on those flies. That would have been easy limits in a few drops with smaller hooks and more patience.
@philosophyd
@philosophyd 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Nic, thanks for the constructive feedback. I could reel up all the way to the boat but at that point, it's a gamble if the ling decides to let go instead of piggybacking. If I try to set the hook, it's also a gamble if the ling isn't right over the hook. For the flies, I intentionally used larger 7/0 hooks because I don't want to keep smaller rockfish. We could've easily limited if we wanted to, but we targeted bigger rockfish and we let go ~15 rockfish together and didn't keep the ones on the larger end. Most of the rockfish that nipped at the bait and didn't get hooked are the smaller fish which I didn't want to keep
@nbaumann89
@nbaumann89 5 жыл бұрын
Philosophy D understood on the bigger hooks - those smaller rockfish did look thick! In terms of the ling hook set, I wasn’t suggesting you reel it up as if it was piggy backing. As you see from your footage and other underwater footage, lings will often t-bone their prey and sit there for a few seconds, if you set the hook at this point you’ll very likely yank it out of its mouth unless you’re lucky, IMO this is a 50% hook up rate at best. If you give it a few seconds to start eating the bait, wait for the rod to load up and then start reeling, you will hook the fish and it won’t be piggybacking. Just don’t stop reeling. Your hook up rate will improve considerably. Same principle with big swimbaits - do not set the hook and just start cranking when the rod starts loading up. From looking at the action of your rod you might also want something a little stiffer and more backbone.
@philosophyd
@philosophyd 5 жыл бұрын
Right on. I'll try that next time. It's just a reaction when your rod loads up - it could be bottom and ya don't wanna get snagged! Appreciate the comments 👍🏽👍🏽
@Memo-nd6fj
@Memo-nd6fj 16 күн бұрын
Great ideas. Your suggestions are evident by just watching the camera video. You could also leave your offering on the hook, if its not to big and leave it down on the bottom and you could get a large ling attached when you pull it up, and the ling wont even be hooked, just hanging on to the fish, but you cannot let the ling break the surface bc it will just let go and swim back down. Been there, done that!

I debated buying this same camera last year but questioned its use in our silty/ glacial waters. This footage is pretty cool. Black is a killer color in clear waters and so maybe paint it to make it less appealing. Schooling rockfish are such fun with a flyrod

It seems to me that it would be beneficial to use a single swimbait and add a split ring and a hook to the end of the torpedo weight! Also, with all of those fish that hit the GoPro, I feel like you might have had more luck using a larger swimbait. Great underwater footage and some awesome insights on whats going on down below. Well done!

Great footage and excellent commentary. When you were snagged at the end, how was the boat not drifting? I usually get a good 4-5 seconds max to loosen the snag before i have to drag the boat back around to work out the snag (usually without a good result). Really interesting to see the rockfish go after the torpedo weights. Also was surprised to see the lingcod free swimming. I always assumed lingcod were hunkered down in structure ready to ambush prey. Good stuff. Keep up with the underwater footage!

You should try slightly fatter lures, ( though not bigger). Natural blues, greys and muted greens, with silvery flanks and an off white tail, on a Texas style rig, with a weight stop bead 3 feet from your lure. The swim action is excellent and lingcod can't resist them here in Ireland.

Been thinking about buying one of those cameras...guess you made a good commercial for them. Image quality is really good! Might grab one and use it on a Kokanee trip in a couple weeks. Here in Oregon, we often use weights with hooks on them...for a good reason. People will use lead molds formed from buzz bombs. Try a 6'6" Trevala MH and a Penn Battle II 4000 w/50lb braid. It's an amazing combo, my biggest fish on that setup is a 65lb Pacific Halibut (Hippoglossus stenolepis) (video on my channel).

Our baits are sometimes used as marker buoys for fish races, get slapped by tails, tumbled over, they nibble the swivels, the weights, all but the hooks, but that just makes us more creative about making fake baits that taste and smell like real fish food nek nek nek and it works.

wow ... i really learned a lot with this ... for one the rig you were using , and i have used the same , is not very efficient ... and we all need a lead weight lure .... it helps to put your lead weight on like 2 lb line . then you do not loose the whole rig
