Nice review Randy. These are my main cans for use in headphone listening. I run them off of a Monolith all tube headphone amp(sadly no longer available)and I haven't been bothered by excess sibilance. Maybe it the tubes or it just might be my ear/brain combo but I haven't noticed it. I do like them a little more than the Drop 6xx on this setup. Thanks for the wonderful channel and drive safe out there.

Still rocking my original HE-400 pair from 10+ years ago. They were my first planar and my introduction to hifi. Their connectors suck, they have the weight and comfort of a brick, and I had to threadlock pretty much everything on it that could possibly come unscrewed. They're the cheapest headphones I have, but despite all that they're still part of the collection of headphones on my desk and I will never get rid of them. They're still my go- to favorite headphones when I'm looking to have *fun* listening to lively music. A perfect example of cheap and old still being awesome =)

There is a recommended notch mod one can do to improve the headband pressure on the top. Put strips of cardbord on both sides of the headband and put a pinch on the top part for 10-12hours.Think Sennheiser notch.. That creates a soft notch in the stuffing to reduce a hotspot the top of your head. You can also put a big box between the earcups for siimiliar amount of time to decrease the clamping force.I recommend doing this without the pads though. This headphone is good for music but not gaming, the sound is not very directional in these. I use Peace equalizer with a notch in brakeup frequency removing the sibiliance. I use onlinetonegenerator and with a sweep going and you quickly hear the brakeup freq getting louder. Then I use a steep notch at that frequency and the sibiliance and cymbals errors are gone.

I just got these and paired em with a GSX1000, I know it's not the best but I love and use the features alot especially the music mode that gives me the bass when ever I'm feeling like a bass head lol and 7.1 for gaming. I have them at 70 which is enough for me. I'll probably get a separate amp later down the line but for just starting out into this audiophile world I absolutely love these headphones.

I just realized this hobby is probably like a lot of others in a way: the more you get into it, the more you learn, the less satisfied you get with stuff, specifically at the low end. When you get started you think, "These Grado headphones are only $89?! They're AMAZING!!" Four years later you're like, "Don't get me wrong. The Meze Empyrean are great. I just think they're overly warm in the bass presentation for a $3,000 headphone. I just think you can get better bass in an open back headphone in the $3k-$5k category."

How do you y'all get the money to just drop 3k-5k on a headphone? Do you just save up or get paid really well?
@AndyBHome
@AndyBHome Жыл бұрын
@@pillowboy7995 I'm surprised at how much money people spend on things that I would consider an unnecessary luxury. I think some people obviously just make a whole lot of money. Others spend way too much on things that are just fun. Older people who are well established can have good jobs, get paid the most they ever will in their careers, low monthly expenses, and a desire to reward themselves. Those guys can release afford to spend ten times what I can, even though they're in similar careers. Other people spend a fortune on something like a pair of headphones, but that's where all of their spare cash goes, and outside of that they are extremely frugal. Some people get money from rich parents or friends. But I think a lot of HiFi nerds buy fancy expensive gear and later sell it. I think a lot of HiFi dudes have gone through hundreds of thousands worth of gear, but slowly committed only about the price of a car on it over the years because they keep turning it over, buying and selling, sometimes new, but often used, and the total value of their purchases is really only what they have in their home, which I would guess is usually about $30k worth of stuff when it was new, but they buy used and trade up, and I'm the end only about half of that value was ever handed over in cash. If you look today, you could probably put together a $50k retail price system that's ten years old and used for about $10k or $15k if you really hunt for it. Last but not least, I think a lot of people exaggerate. They hear something at a store or a friend's house, or borrow something for two weeks, and for the rest of their lives they act like they owned it for a decade. I'm solidly mid-tier and love every minute of it. I rarely spend more than $200 on anything, and that's only once every five years or so. I do spend a hundred or two on things every year or so. My economy car expenses far outweigh my HiFi budget, and I'm not particularly interested in cars.

I just got 400se from a friend who listened to them for about a month and didn't fell in love with their signature. She sold me those for around 80 bucks, and I'm... Re-listening everything xD Those came with a better cable than the initial run. Paired them with FiiO e10k-tc, and fortunately it's enough to power them. E10k-tc goes 200mw to 32 ohms, plenty loud for me personaly.

I'm still happy with my 1983's Stax SRM-1/MK-2 Pro earspeakers, bought back then for USD $500, the best sounding and most expensive headphone on the market at that time. So my point is: do not buy cheap, because you will eventually lose twice. Instead, for the long time enjoyment purchase the best sounding audio equipment you can afford. Now, I'm dreaming for Stax-SR-X9000 Electrostatic Headphones, unfortunately out of my reach now ! I own Luxman L-550AX Integrated amp, Quad ESL-63 (used), REL 212/SE sub, OPPO UDP-205, Yamaha NP-S2000, Denon DP-67L, JVC TD-V711, TEAC X-2000R, and Sennheiser HD 800S. So, I'm not exactly cheap audio man, but my system sound wonderful! Randy, you may be right, JBL Studio 530 (on sale for $240) sound as good as ESL-63 (one of the best speaker ever). But the same speakers powered by Adcom GFA-535 ($300) did not sound even close to the Luxman class A (20 W). Is it worth to spend more? Definitely. Good luck!

You should probably listen to these through a proper amp and do another review. You'll get excellent instrument separation, cleaner sound and no sibilance, plus you can appreciate the bass response. These are very low distortion headphones, what you're hearing is probably from your dongle dac that isn't designed to drive low impedance planars. They actually have smoother highs than the Sundaras and deeper bass, though they lack a little bit in the upper mids so female vocals feel a little recessed. I think that's their only flaw.

As per usual I'm late to the party again... After 40+ years of listening to music through dynamic driver headphones - I have no qualms about many that I used. The deal breaker for me this week was noticing little black bits on my shirts and my desk, turns out the "pleather" ear pads are pealing - the pleather is peeling off itself, like a bad retread tire - and no way to replace the pads on the headphones. This is my first dive into planar magnetic headphones. I chose this specific pair because (a) great reviews (b) price, money's tight these days (c) Hifiman planar magnetic headphones... the name speaks for itself IMO. I'm currently running all sound through on-board motherboard sound via 3.5mm - RCA input (Fosi Audio T20 tube amplifier) and 3.5mm out to a pair of Tascam TH06. Purchasing these headphones is the first step into upgrading from the Fosi Audio amplifier to either a Topping MX3 or an SMSL AO300 headphone DAC/ amp.

Great review! My passion in life has been making planar magnetic drivers from scratch, even before magneplanar falsely patented theirs. I feel the sibilence on the headphones you reviewed is due to either the magnetic motor assembly being weak or the mass off the diaphragm being too high. Loss of control at high frequencies is the result.

Good entry level planar, with a bit of low bass boost EQ you can experience the clean deep planar bass. A bit wonky and a slight hole in the upper middle can make vocals funny, some treble resonance that causes more of a hashiness or fine grittiness than sibilance. Wouldn't compare to a Grado though, Grados have less low bass, smoother midbass and mids, much brighter upper mids and then some have splashy upper treble, some don't. If you can find a phone with a good 3.5mm output (mine has 2 battery arrangement and goes comfortably loud) or a good laptop (MacBook etc) should drive them directly fine, otherwise a small high current amp works well, tubes also, since planar has very flat impedance.

Considering your selection of Hifiman headphones, I think getting the XS would be a side-grade purchase. Perhaps you could experiment with pad swapping. I've heard that Dekoni's Fenestrated Sheepskin Pads pair very nicely with the Ananda, providing improved clarity and a larger soundstage.

Got these because, $100, why not try them? Straight from my PC I was unimpressed. I had a $50 Nobosound NS-08 'tube' headphone amp that was gifted to me and I never needed with other headphones. Figured, why not, and wow. These went from, 'no thanks' to 'uhh... hell yeah!' I like them better than my open back Grado SR125. The Hifiman seems to really bring forward the guitar in rock. Comparing these to $400 Master & Dynamic open back, I would not have bought the M&D if I had these first. Oh yeah. 621 miles gets me from west Texas, to east Texas... 0 state changes.

I have owned the HE400se for several months, and wanted to add a very relative comment. With dongle dacs, even balanced, the 400se’s were sibilant, lacked any substantial bass, and were really not great. As soon as plugged them into a THX888 desktop headphone amp that supplies loads of power, the sound completely changed. Thee sibilance vanished, the bass filled out very nicely, and they were just an entirely different class of headphone. I see they upgraded the cable that they supplied with them, which they really needed to. The one they shipped with mine was the worst headphone cable I had ever seen.

I have both and prefer Hifiman, I think the bas for instance sounds cleaner. But the 560s are more comfy as they do not weigh half a tonne. Both have a bit extra treble, so not quite neutral. The cable for hifiman is also rather short, so I'd recommend purchasing an extension directly.

I don't speak fluent Aussie but "go for the Sennies m8." I can easily drive them through the headphone jack on my Samsung Note 9 (curse you for removing it after calling Apple out on it!) and it's not sibilant. I'm sensitive to higher frequencies and I can get headaches easily and with the HD560s I did just fine after stretching the headband on the box (I figured out the clamping force gave me horrible headaches.) Now they are very comfy to wear. The headband adjustment could be better though. It's a little fiddly and doesn't like to stay where you set it. The soundstage is wide, I've been fooled a few times thinking something happened and removed them to listen to my surroundings. Bass is not as pronounced as I would like so I sometimes EQ it. It's not weak though, I don't want to give you that impression by accident. However, if you want to listen to a lot of rap, edm, and other bass heavy music these aren't for you. These are my first pair of audiophile grade headphones so take what I say with a grain of salt.

@@spamcan9208 The 560s aren't really that sibilant as people claim. But they do reveal tracks that are sibilant to begin with. As for the bass, for me it's just the right amount.
