As a Leaf owner, top tip: disconnect 12v battery for 5 minutes, connect back and you'll have sometimes up to 500m of range :)

My first EV was the leaf and 1 time I had 32km of range left and the nearest charger (it was fortunately a fast charger) was 33km away. I had no other choice so I just went for it. Arrived there with - - - and no bars left, no turtle mode but I made it. The charger reported 1% remaining, which i find strange since the experience you had with Frankenstein.

Probably never. It wouldn't work most likely. The BMS and stuff is not built for it. Another problem is getting it approved and road legal. Very strict rules and regulations on this in Norway and probably Europe in general.

The BMS must reset for Charging history when the modules were replaced- it only shows 2 QC and 37 L1/L2. Be interesting to see if it resets again when more modules are replaced.

Had a 2013 facelift leaf for 5 years. 35,000 miles. Never had more than 60 miles out of it. Went through ball joints, tyres, corroded brake discs, motor inverter. Wasn’t very reliable and ended up with 40 mile range due to degradation. Very comfortable car. Got a Zoe that was much better on the range but crap to drive and plasticy. Now have an I-pace and as you would expect, it’s night and day. Never had home charger.

Is this an NCM battery? The voltages you showed with flat battery were nowhere near the low voltage cut off for NCM cells of 2.75V
@Cosmycal Жыл бұрын
It's NCM111 for the 30kWh and LMO for the 24kWh. The LMO ones from 2015-2016 are the "lizard" variant which has an improved electrolyte against heat. The best in longevity one out of those three is the 24kWh lizard one, the 24kWh non lizard degrades somewhat quick with pass of time, the 30kWh overheats easily and also suffers more being at high SoC voltage so it degrades somewhat quick with use instead of time.

I think replacing one module in a battery where the other modules are already degraded is not the right solution. Because the other modules have different parameters (internal resistance, capacity), the battery will not be reliable. The battery as a whole should be replaced.
@Robcomesana Жыл бұрын
Well, that's the optimal solution, but on these cars with low value it may be too expensive. Also, replacement battery stock is low: I am waiting for a 30 kWh battery replacement under warranty and it's already been over 8 months with no date for new stock. So, all things considered, replacing 1 or 2 damaged modules can be a proper solution for a few years. The best option would be to find used modules that match the current battery module characteristics, but that's not an easy task.
@SustainableGal Жыл бұрын
just stick some 48v server batteries init instead, or plain LiFePo4 200ah 4.2v cells

Dude, the turtle is your final warning. How many warnings do you need?
@bjornnyland Жыл бұрын
No, that's not the final warning.
@chrissscottt Жыл бұрын
@@bjornnyland I disagree. You get your first warning when the projected range starts flashing and you get a final warning with the turtle. Nissan doesn't cater for people deliberately running out of juice.
@Infinion Жыл бұрын
@@chrissscottt I think you missed the point of the "Drive until the battery is dead" video series, which is to test how the car handles as it transitions to become incapacitated. The leaf immediately puts the car into neutral, without a limit on speed, and with no electric power steering. That's a big fail. " Nissan doesn't cater for people deliberately running out of juice." So people who run out of juice driving Nissan's vehicles are delinquents, or perhaps Mischief-makers then? Maybe Nissan didn't consider the dangerous predicaments they can put drivers in when the BMS suddenly switches off power to the motor AND the power steering (and brakes?). " the turtle is your final warning" No, the red 12V battery indicator is the final warning, which by that time is too late and the car is coasting in N with no power steering. Imagine driving at 50km/h and that happens right before a sharp curve in the road, or a hill where you thought you could regen, but actually you can't use your brakes any more. The turtle universally indicates limp-mode which is just a power limit (turtles move slowly, but they still move). It's a warning, but doesn't give you an intuitive understanding of EXACTLY when the car will become incapacitated. The objective of a final warning should give the driver everything they need to make final evasive maneuvers and get safe. "how many warnings do you need" Obviously the last warning and how it affects the car is the most important. Each manufacturer handles low battery differently, so you make it sound like it's obvious, but if you were paying attention through the video series, it's not.
