Middle of no where ? Not true I’ve been to the salt flats in Utah a fair amount in my life. There between Eagle mountain, Utah and Wendover, Utah. And if you have Verizon you’ll have full coverage the entire time. There’s also a lot of people that shoot rabbits by the salt flats below the mountains.
@erichkaufmann52844 жыл бұрын
It’s really not the middle of no where, however the salt does create a mirror effect and will duplicate mountains and you’ll drive to them they will disappear that’s why meany people get lost it’s also kind of creepy when that happens. You can also find a ton of arrow heads left over from the native Americans that use to hunt around the salt flats called the Utes which is why Utah is called Utah that means people of the mountains in Ute.
@erichkaufmann52844 жыл бұрын
You’re also able to see the old Air Force training Center in wendover,Utah where they trained the pilots that dropped the nuclear bomb over japan in WW2. There’s also caves out there that have native Indians remains in them, and there’s skin walker ranch in that area will just look up Skin walker ranch it’s rather creepy as well don’t get lost and have fun if you go there!

I think I did about 125 in a 1990 chevy truck. It had the "moonie" gauges that topped out at 85, but the trailing edge edge had rolled around and gotten up to 40, so I assume it was 125. The wind noise was louder than the engine. I actually passed my cousin while doing this, and later she called to scold me, and said the wind from my truck almost pulled her into the other lane.

Everyone thinks the Salt Flats is easy to drive on. It isn’t. But the statement that you can’t see ahead of you at 145 is just hogwash lol. It may seem that way but not true. In 2016 Dave Davidson of Vintage Hot Rod drove his blown fuel hi boy roadster around a small piece of steel at over 250 mph and was able to tell us exactly where it was within 50 feet ... there’s actually video of it on KZbin, not too hard to Google it. I worked out there from 2010 through 2018 as a roving patrol on course 1. But it’s tricky enough to drive on when conditions are good. He was smart to get out of it because once the front tires lift from the ‘slop’ it’s all over and would have spun if he was lucky. If he wasn’t lucky he could have wadded it up in a ball. Discretion is the better part of valor.

@@DPRX99 every asshole thinks driving on the salt flats is easy. IT AIN'T. You wouldn't know shit from Shinola if you were buffing the floor son - just go check in with some of my 'chump pals' over at Jalopnik like Dan W, head of impound at Speedweek or some of the other fools who have set records at BONNEVILLE I've spent the 3rd week of August (~September) watching my dad, then racing, then working at BONNEVILLE for almost 50 years - Here's the thing son, wide street tires generate their own lift on surface moisture starting around 140 for an improperly equipped street car, while wings don't typically start working until about 180. In my MANY YEARS working as a course steward, most cars spin around 150 and up and typically on the wettest part of the course (about the 1-1/4 Mile mark where the underground stream crosses the course). So don't talk shit son, post a better video, or better yet come to Speedweek and show us how to go fast

Doug, the type of guy who gets a speeding ticket at the Bonneville Salt Flats.
@desertdenizen64286 жыл бұрын
I can tell you from personal experience that driving on the Salt Flats at high speed is much scarier than on the Autobahn. The reason is the salt surface is loose enough to break traction in any car with sufficient power. When the car gets up to speed, very often it begins "waltzing" back and forth on the loose surface. You have to be mindful of making small corrections and the whiteness of the surface doesn't give you much contrast to see little ruts. Even when the track has been recently scraped, it is not pavement smooth. If you start to "lose" it, it is hard to get the car back in line because once the tires start sliding sideways, the salt piles up on one side of the tires, creating a hump they have to go over in order to straighten out. A slide can easily become a rollover as the tires will start to dig in. Most cars cannot get up to the same speed on the salt as they can on pavement because of less traction and yes, I have driven on the Autobahn at about 150 mph in the 1960's. At the Salt Flats, I ran a 1968 Dodge Charger RT hemi in 1970 @ 142 mph, top speed was limited by wheelspin, no rear wing (would have helped). It felt weird having to feather the throttle at 140+!

Million dollar idea... Take a couple of water tank trucks out there. Hook up a couple of 2 gpm hoses, Set them up a by the edge of the flats by the exit, and charge $20 for 5 minutes of water to clean your car off. You could get fancy, and get some 1 inch perforated hoses so cars could drive over them, and clean the underbelly.

The salt flats aren’t that large. I mean yea if your stranded with no vehicle your pretty much toast but if you drive in a straight line away from the large mountains you’ll eventually hit route 80.
@christophermyers81575 жыл бұрын
Unless you get stuck in a spring, or can't see the mountains because of crappy weather. I believe near Wendover it is about 12 miles at it's widest, but when you get out there it looks like 1 mile. You would be advised to pack a magnetic compass if you go past losing site of the roadway.
@helisoma5 жыл бұрын
But the angle you drive in towards 80 could take you longer or shorter and closer to route 80 the terrain becomes less and less navigable (ie: rougher).
