Thank you, love your honest review. One thing that has been bugging me (not having seen the film) is this interview with Coppola in which he states that his inspiration came from reading about the Catiline Conspiracy in ancient Rome, which he claims was a fight between tradition and visions of the future, this simply is not the case whatsoever. The Catiline Conspiracy was primarily a coup attempt involving many established Patricians at a time preceding Rome becoming an Empire, rather than a crumbling Empire in need of Futuristic vision. From watching many reviews it seems Coppola got the Catiline Conspiracy confused with Atlas Shrugged and also has introduced Flubber into the mix. Anyway, loved your review!

I used to live a few blocks from the former American Zoetrope Studios in Hollywood, which he lost after "One From the Heart." He has said for years that he's learned the only way for him to have access to money is to pretend like he already has it. That meant going into debt and occasionally declaring bankruptcy. This time he made the movie he wanted to make -- with his own money. I feel obligated to see it because of Coppola's career, but I'm in no hurry...

Fact: Even the greatest, fails from time to time. Actually, it’s said that’s what defines greatness. The willingness to continue after failure. Over and over again to achieve the goal. It can’t be denied. Coppola was/is genius. At the least, a very talented person who’s been part of some of the best. It sounds to me as if, this one was truly over the top. Oh well. I’m sure he’ll survive it. This is like the fifth review I’ve heard of it. I’m sure I’ll see it somewhere on the net in the next year or two but I am glad I didn’ pay 100 bucks to go out, eat, and theater for this which IS sad considering he is someone who is worthy of it.

It was taking him years for pre production and production, that he got tired after, and had a pause and before editing it, he went and did very small movie, very unambitious, rock n roll style Chunking Express. Then, after restoring his breathe, he returned and finished it.

Why don't you actually go back again? Without seeing the film (it most likely won't be released in the city where I live, sodad...), I sincerely believe it calls for at least a second viewing, if not multiple viewings. What always upsets me is that almost all KZbin reviewers would review a film immediately after they have seen it ONCE, sometimes even as soon as they leave the theatre, at the car park or in their own vehicles. Good films require second or multiple viewings to be accurately and responsibly assessed and critiqued, just like a book, a piece of music or a painting.

Coppola has made four of the greatest movies of all time in succession back in the 1970s: Godfather I & II, The Conversation and Apocalypse Now. One could even argue that his Dracula is a misunderstood masterpiece, Keanu Reeves' performance aside. I think he should be afforded some space to make an ambitious movie that disregard narrative conventions in trying to come up with new ways to express ideas on film: the mixture of the high and low in Megalopolis is the point. Many good movies fail to last longer than a week in our minds, while I expect this film to linger on for years because of its unevenness (akin to the Beatles' White Album). Overall, I think we are beyond good or bad assessments here, just the question of how much debate it can inspire in audiences regarding its ideas. Meanwhile, Coppola has already moved on, beginning to work on his next film project, a musical adaptation of the novel "Glimpses of the Moon".

I saw Megalopolis last night also, I feel the actors were farcical on purpose with their dialogue. Presenting Rome in modern times bares a righteous attitude while being serious with lines from the Stoics. A lot of the story was ham fisted also purposely ... while showing all forms of a visual spectacle is needed. It creates conversation and a need to see it again to pickup on what one had missed from first viewing. From 1 out of 5 ... I agree a 2.5 rating.

I was at that AZ showing too! Luckily not that far of a drive for me or I would’ve regretted it even more. I didn’t have high expectations going in, I was mainly going because people hyped up the audience participation element, and even that was incredibly disappointing. Some reviewers are going soft on this movie only because it's Francis Ford Coppola and an A-list cast. if this was a nobody director the reviews would be way harsher.

Stop letting old dudes write commentary with current vernacular. You are never going to get a Sly savvy well written movie by a dude that's 40 years older than his Target fucking audience. I don't ascribe to the whole you can make great art your whole life. The dude is done he needs to retire. That's the reason he had to sell his shit to make this movie everybody gets it except for Cinema nerds.

Terrible film, a nonsense that is not understood. The actresses are of very low quality and it shows in their acting and since the actor does not understand his role it is not known if the acting is good or bad. Now I understand why the movie studios didn't want to produce it. There is no script and it is the sum of incomprehensible philosophical scenes. Very BAD and a failure at the box office and in critics, even though there are some who rescue something from this disaster, probably some snobbish critic and friend of Coppola?

Last year, Godzilla Minus One was a movie I found so good, that I told everyone about it to see it because I thought it was that good. Megalopolis is that, but in a “you need to know what I just saw, I can’t bear this knowledge alone” kind of way.
